Ever seen a bridge float down a river?! This big, blue, 5.1 million pound truss is part of the new U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge under construction in Smithland. The 700ft. long truss was transported by flotilla and placed on the main piers of the bridge back in September. Moving the truss to its new home took teamwork by Jim Smith Contracting, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), American Bridge, the U.S. Coast Guard and numerous agencies from a five-county area.
The new bridge will improve a significant cross-country link for U.S. 60 through western Kentucky and a critical connection for local Livingston County traffic. The Cumberland River splits the county, and the bridge is the only direct link for local commuters, commerce, school buses, and emergency responders. Final completion of the $63.8 million project is expected in December of 2023.
