A U.S. P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft conducting surveillance operations over the South China Sea is warned multiple times to "go away quickly" by the Chinese Navy. Video includes audio of radio communications as the confrontation takes place. The U.S. P-8A is from Patrol Squadron 45 (VP-45) and was observing the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) Navy building an installation in the South China Sea. Filmed on May 20, 2015.

First of all, to my brothers and sisters in the US Airforce, thank you for putting your lives on the line each and every day on countless missions like this one! most of what you guys do specially during peace times and away from homeland, might not be covered by the media and average citizens might not be aware of what it actually takes for us to have our peace, freedom and liberty,, so if (hopefully) you come across this comment, please know that although I'm nobody, You have a special place in my heart and I have a world of respect, gratitude and love for all of you. They have to keep repeating there intentions of flying over the area in order to keep a friendly open line of dialog with the Chinese naval operations on the man made island. This is just military banter back and forth by both sides you can even see the one American radio operator laughing at one point during the video while receiving a radio transmission. Mind you at one point you can clearly hear the frustration of one or two Chinese transmissions getting a bit heated yelling GO NOW! As the plane flew closer the transmissions became more angry and this is what can create a huge miscalculation in a split second. That is why this could become a dangerous game of cat and mouse. It only takes one mistake or someone to set off a missile or any kind of provocation to cause what could start the birth pains of a much wider conflict. I really don't know exactly what China is doing by building huge runways on these islands other then to be used as military advantages as well as being in an area that is vastly used as a shipping lane not to mention offshore oil pockets, but the US as with many other nations near by should also be flying over this area so that it appears to China as an international concern not only a US military concern. More countries need to get involved with the oversight of this China offshore land massing, or things could get ugly real quick.

When you are speaking on a radio the procedure calls for you to identify who you are calling, and then yourself on initial contact. Since the PRC military never correctly identifies who it is (i.e. a navy vessel ID, a land station ID, or another Aircraft ID) the P-8 has to keep asking who it is first, then identifying them as "Station calling US military Aircraft". I'm also pretty sure they wanted them to ID themselves as a military station to confirm what they already knew, that China was building a base on this man made island. If you get them to admit it on freq then you have an admission of guilt. TLDR; It's procedure.

It's the International legal agreement for any ship or plane to travel freely outside of a country's 12 mile territorial limit. The reefs where the Chinese are, are legally international waters where anyone can travel.
