*"Coastal vs Central/Mid-West. For the most part."* Look at the county-by-county breakdown, not just states. Even heavily blue states have rural counties generally go red. Cities vs. country, just like the Founding Fathers were worried would happen.

In the end, wtf is going on. Back in the day, damn switched on a dime...one minute all red, one minute all blue (Ok I know 4 years is a long time but damn). Now nothing fn shifts. I man ok, sorry yea a few states do but some literally stay red some literally stay blue.

+ShadyDawgWWCF: Divide and conquer, bro. The two prevailing parties have split the country up roughly 50/50, have established sufficiently entrenched ideologies that most people won't readily switch, and have kept third parties out, almost entirely. Of course, eventually people get fed up. As ugly as this election was, I find it optimistic that there were essentially two mutinies in the two major parties. One was successful; one was put down...but at the expense of fatally wounding the eventual candidate. This was a bad year for career politicians!

Well, it's not as simple as that. Alot of states changed hands in the 60's when civil rights were passed, because many democrats were leftist on economics but right wing on race issues, and so were the voters. The democrats went in a social equality direction since then, and they lost the south. At the same time, republicans went to the democrats because they were more moderate on economics, and they agreed with the social issues.

What we think of as the "traditional" layout of the electoral map didn't take shape until 1992. And then a recognizably similar arrangement of the states between the Rs and Ds only started around 2000. The current arrangement is less than 20 years old. Republicans didn't win the South until Regan's 2nd term, long after Dixiecrats and Jim Crow were done away with, and even then, Bill Clinton won back those areas for a short time.

It has more to do with when the parties flipped sides in the 50's and 60's. Alabama, one of the most sure republican states, was democratic up until then.
@freglusdougson1737
@freglusdougson1737 7 жыл бұрын
***** Alabama's demographic has been sustained for pretty much its entire time as a state. Therefore if it had changed, then it should still be a democratic state. Same with California. If the demographic swaps *while* the parties swap, then you would have one consistent party in that state. But it changes. There may be more immigrants and the minds of people may change but the democratic party is changing along with the. So like I said, Alabama has stayed the same and therefore it should swap from blue to red as time goes on because of the party flip. And it does. But California has flopped sides as well. Meaning that it also had to have been a constant. The demographic has stayed similar and hasn't changed very much in relation to the swing of the political map. The more left minded California becomes, the more left minded the democratic party becomes. They swing together and that also shows why and how they would have swung with the ideas flipping parties when they did.

Downside is that if 4 parties ran theoretical one could just get 26% support and win. Leaving 74% of the nation unhappy. If we have 2 extreme parties we could just wait for one to get over half the nation backing it and run with it.
@Alorand
@Alorand 7 жыл бұрын
The standard solution to that, is to then have a run-off election between the top two candidates. Or you could allow voters to have a list vote: 1)Bernie Sanders 2)Jill Stein 3) Hillary Clinton So that your vote would count for Hillary only if Bernie has no chance of winning.

RavenHowl Ever heard of the Philadelphia plan? It's basically affirmative action for government contractors to hire and meet certain minority workers. Nixon wasn't exactly against Civil rights, but he supported more "Law and Order" to bring order to the US after the Civil Rights movement (which actually helped got him a landslide victory as well). And the war on drugs' reputation is more comparable to Kennedy's War on Cuba (pigs bay invasion). Whatever the case, it's "good intentions" to battle harmful drugs isn't it? But we can both agree that every President's actions can be debatable isn't it?

Not really. The Democratic party switched over to support desegregation. Which pretty much over night lost much of the working class white voters in much of rural America. Giving Africans, let alone other Minorities the same freedoms as whites, put whites on the same playing field insuring the possibility that white Americans could fall to the bottom of the barrel in states that they long held an above poverty standard. Before that the Democratic Party was more of a Libertarian Party. They supported less government, and political freedoms, but segregation was one of the topics they often avoided as they knew much of their voter population came from the Rural South and supporting Desegregation would likely destroy the party's chance of being elected. But with Desegregation came an entire new population of voters which were now die heart supporters of the Democratic Party, who eventually supported equal rights, and desegregation with open arms. Issue is, now that desegregation is gone, and equal rights exist (doesn't mean it's always practice) the democratic party has to use a lot of propaganda to snare minorities to vote for them. While white voters, even if they don't' want to admit it, openly don't like the increasing number of minorities in this country, as now the living standards, and average wealth of the nation has dropped considerably, for a lot of reasons, but before desegregation, it was almost always the minorities at the bottom of the barrel. When the South joined the conservative movement, they actually morphed the conservative party into what the democratic party used to be. Irony? Democratic Party today is something different that can not be compared to either the old Republican Party or Old Democrat Party. The Democratic Party is still the Liberal Party that hasn't changed too much, but the ideas of what is "Liberal" in America has changed with time so.

YiaM There was never a switch. The Republicans originally brought up the civil rights act. They also voted for it. The Republicans voted 80% for it while only 40% of Democrats were for it. Why would they switch if they were always the party that supported it? People switched because of the push for the welfare state. It had nothing to do with racism.

The american party was also known as the "know nothing" party because at their rally's, people nearby were questioned about what was going on and they would say 'I know nothing." The reason they were being questioned is because the know nothing party was a radical anti immigrant party wanting to deport all Irish immigrants and only supported american-born white men. Pretty fuckin crazy.

I would think you're teacher is being hyperbolic. If not outright malicious. The American party wanted to rid the country of all Irish Catholics. The basis of their bigotry was more religious than ethnic. It was a protestant movement that considered itself still at war with the Catholic church. They viewed the Irish Catholics as an "invasion" force perpetrated by the pope to overthrow the new world protestant promised land. At least their propaganda would tell you that. But it also didn't hurt that Irish people where in-popular. It was mostly steeped in the SAME old B.S. Collectivism vs individualism. The Catholic church was considered the "collectivist" welfare nanny state, and protestants where the individualist, meritocratic cream of the crop. Trump wants to crack down on illegal Immigration, wants to hardened our vetting process for entry into the country. If anything it's become nationalist or a Federalist. Fact is he could care less if your a Latino. As long as your a resident or a citizen paying taxes. So Federalist. Not even a nationalist.

@beaverones3935 7 жыл бұрын
Why? It´s stupid and undemocratic. All it does is give too much power to states full of idiots. They teach creationism in schools in these southern states and they want voting power. They should not be able to vote ffs. What we need is an IQ test. That would make it so about 80 % of americans can´t vote but atleast we will make the right decisions.
@tomekkruk6147
@tomekkruk6147 7 жыл бұрын
So basically anyone who has a different opinion than yours is an idiot, and should not be eligible to vote. What makes you think you're inteligent enough to make such decisions? Perhaps if you got yourself tested the result would not be in your favor?
@beaverones3935
@beaverones3935 7 жыл бұрын
Tomek Kruk If you believe in creationism you don´t have a different opinion. You are a reality denying moron. The problem with americans is that many think that their ignorance is just as good at someone elses knowledge. You have accepted extreme stupidity because dem scientists are paid for by the evil government right? There are things such as facts and many americans seem to ignore them. Everything is not neutral. Republicans tend to be wrong and liberals tend to be correct. That means republicans are stupid.
@beaverones3935
@beaverones3935 7 жыл бұрын
Tomek Kruk I did not support Hillary, I hate that bitch. I am also not an american. You just don´t get it. Trump is a bigot. Wanting to ban ALL muslims from coming into the country is bigoted. Racist idk, that term is so overused these days. People don´t know what it really means so I will not call him that. Funny how you talk about countries where only a handful of people make decisions are bad because the US is literally that. You are ruled by billionaries that have bought off the politicians and if you think Trump will change that well, you are delusional. Trump is the elite and if you look at the people he is putting in his administration they are all deep establishment insiders. Hillary also hot 1 million more votes than Trump which makes it undemocratic that Trump won the election. The US is not a democracy when the candidate with the least amount of votes win. Americans are ignorant, you are ignorant. I did not support Hillary at all. Her supporters are almost as stupid as Trump supporters but I still see that Hillary is better than Trump.

Beaver Ones Banning migration from countries that support terrorism is bigotry? Pull your head out of your ass mate - Islam is a sick, twisted and oppresive ideology based purely on hate towards non muslims. It is what it is and if you need evidence go look at the human rights situation in the first islamic country you can think of. All it takes is to read stuff like their holy book to see for yourself what islam really is. Or even better - go and live for a few months in one of many islamic ghettos in Europe. Not gonna be a fun experience i assure you, so banning this sick ideology is not bigotry, it's common sence. But hey - it's easier to look away and pretend you don't see stuff and repeating that bullshit about the religion of piece. Funny is how you critisize the US electoral system as beeing undemocratic, and yet you claim that only people who you deem inteligent should be the ones who are eligible to vote. This actually has a name - hypocrisy. Not to mention you have absolutely no knowledge about the system that has been doing fine for centuries in the US, because if you had you wouldn't call it undemocratic. You have no idea why they vote like that, and probably no idea whatsoever that we do have a similar system in the EU when it comes to european election (ones where we elect cunts to the EU parliment). But how could you know that? That actually requires a bit of work and research, which are thing that socialist twats like you are not capable of doing.

I've always been told this story about the "southern strategy" starting under Nixon (republican), but in the first election in which Nixon won, the majority of the Southern states went to the Democratic and the American Independent party. In the second election, he won in a massive landslide, securing nearly all of the south, the north, middle America and the coasts. His competition only secured 17 electoral votes. Afterwards, Jimmy Carter (democrat) secured a large number of Southern states, and Reagan (republican) secured many of the coastal areas.

Living in rural and urban areas, a lot of rural people are ignorant when it comes to culture or anything different to them. They do have a wide range of general skills but most have no higher education. There education is religion. A lot of them work on farms or factories. A lot of the Urban people are more educated and highly specialized in what they do. Both urban and rural people can be equally rude and friendly. I prefer urban because I don't get bullied because of how I dress or my sexual orientation. I got tired of being treated like shit so I moved to a city. All the Reagen haters, who have an issue, with looking at the BLS, and Government Census. As well as house ownership, car owner ship, inflation calculator, and etc. The only reason we entered into stagnation, was because Clinton created shit trade deals, that destroyed our manufacturing. While raises taxes so high, hundreds of companies moved out of the US. Then Bush came along, being a good national unifying leader. Though not know a rats ass about economics. Then we got Obama who literally increased the debt more than all the other presidents combined. While using executive orders to pass through some of the worse policy's, and legislation, to ever exist in this country. I recommend you stop fulling for the BS lies, and take a look at the actual data of Manufacturing jobs, BLS, Civil labor force participation rate, Government Census, Trading Economics, Inflation Calculator, and etc. So you can actually have an opinion based on factual evidence, and economic sense.

0:57 Andrew Jackson changed the face of voting in this election cycle. Notice the massive difference in turnout for this year compared to just 4 years prior; from 352,780 popular votes in 1824 to 1,143,450 popular votes in 1828. Andrew Jackson ran a campaign to include people from all walks of life, and all levels of education and political awareness/activeness to vote. His popularity as the Hero of New Orleans among rural voters played no small part in this victory, nor did the constant attacks on John Q. Adams from himself and Jacksonian Democrats that fractured from the Democratic-Republican Party during those 4 years of party instability to form the Democratic party for this election cycle and going into the future. The Democrats were very upset with the results of the 1824 election because despite winning the popular and electoral votes among 4 candidates, Jackson still did not manage to seize the Presidency. The reason for this being that he did not win the majority vote necessary, and thus the decision fell to the House of Representatives for who would be President in accordance with the Twelfth Amendment. When Henry Clay aligned himself with Adams due to similarities in their domestic interests and for dislike of Jackson, and Adams later appointed Henry Clay as his Secretary of State, it infuriated Andrew Jackson, whom people often described as hot-headed. Jackson claimed this alignment of interests was Adams striking a "corrupt bargain" with Clay, and led to the division of the Democratic-Republican Party and into the Two-Party system we are familiar with today; the Democrats who were concerned with the results of the popular votes, and the National Republicans who were content with the status quo and felt that pandering to local interests was at the expense of national interests. Incidentally, the attacks fired back at Andrew Jackson targeted him as a "jackass," which Jackson embraced; leading to the Democratic Party being symbolized by the donkey ever since. It's still a point of debate even now whether or not Jackson's vision of ordinary voters has been favorable for the future of our country instead of the established political "elite" that were involved and responsible voters with greater knowledge of political events and national policy, which is the way our Founding Fathers intended it, but the right of every citizen to vote is without contest. The First Amendment guarantees every citizen's freedom of expression, which includes voting, and there's nothing short of a dictatorship that can decide who is qualified to vote for our country's future, which is inherently counter to the values of American government and society and can only be more destructive to our future than advocating for all popular voters to make their voices heard in the way Jackson did. In case my language did not indicate already, it is my biased point of view that Jackson needed to open this Pandora's Box in order to garner the support to secure the Presidency, and it is impossible to measure whether or not and to what degree this change in voting may have negatively impacted American History. Narcissist or Populist? Who knows. Either way, the point of contention even continues into today's political discussions as Democrats have complained in reaction to the elections of President George W. Bush in the year 2000 and this year's election of Donald J. Trump that popular votes for their nominees exceeded the opposing candidate despite the electoral college being won by both candidates; by a landslide margin in the case of Donald J. Trump compared to the 5-point difference that separated Al Gore and George Bush in 2000. America is traditionally a Constitutional Democratic-Republic, but should it move in the direction of a Constitutional Democracy?
