My Dad worked on every one of those planes. Most of them were from McCoy AFB, Orlando, FL. My Dad was stationed there, then went TDY to U Tapao during the Linebacker missions to work on C-130s, KC-135s and B-52s.

Joined in March 68. Lackland basic in an old condemned wooden barracks, because the new barracks were behind schedule. Keesler for Electronics & Airborne Avionics training. Pease AFB 8th AF 509th BW. When I got there they told me not to unpack, because half of our Buffs, KC-135's, and support personnel were going to SEA. I spent a few days at Kadena, 2 weeks at CCK then to Utapao for several months. Was on the flightline replacing an IFF unit inside the tail of a KC-135 when one of the Buffs crashed, burned & exploded just off the runway. The explosion knocked a rescue helicopter out of the sky. I believe the helicopter crew were killed but the Buff crew escaped.

Too cool... I haven't seen an C-124 "Ol Shaky" since 1968 ! I Loved that fat old bird. Flew from Hickam to Johnston Island on them a few times in 1966/67 for a 100 day TDY on JI !

I was at U-T from October 5, 1972 to March 5, 1973. I live in Chiang Mai now. I remember the beach restaurant, NewLand, Sattahip, ganja, The beer was more potent then compared to 2020. You drank 1.5 liters in 1972 and you were laughing, falling down, staggering. and highly intoxicated. Beer in 1972 was said to contain formaldahyde( enbalming fluid). Ganja was excellent, best and cheapest in the world. No snow, no ice, nothing below 60 degrees.

Was at U-Tapao 73-74 635th MMS Munitions Inspection. I had been there 3 months when the bombing halt came and became regular duty so I brought my family over and we lived in Pattaya for 9 months.

I remember most of those aircraft being there, along with the U-2's and I loved watching the SR-71's take off since they was like a blur when trying to take a photo of them from the beach area at the end of the runway.

Funny, I was a Utapo in 1968, I worked Security Police and I never saw a U-2 or SR-71 there, nothing but B-52's, KC 135 and some of those Sub chasers.

@@jamesj2980 The U-2 hanger(s) was at the end of the flight line nearest the Hospital. At one time there were 3 U-2 aircraft. The SR-71 was never assigned to U-Tapao.

@@jamesj2980 Same here... I was the Base Photographer (I worked directly for the Base Information Office) and I would have been assigned to take pics of them if they had been there ! Aug. 1967/68 The Sub Chasers were the P3 Orions !

What, no U2? I was on the other side of Mad Dog Mt. that you see in the background of some of there photos at Camp Samaesan. Any day that I was up at 0600 the U2 would be takin' off. That baby had its own roar and would go nearly vertical.

The Navy had five or six P-3 V Orions at their station near the beach. I flew with them several times as an observer. They did a max throttle take off for me which was quite a thrill. The Army had Camp Sami-San on the periphery of U'tapao but I was never sure about what they did. We used to go down to the beach and 200 ft above you was a B52 KC 135 and if you were lucky, a U-2 might be landing.

Camp Samae San was an Army port which was part USASUPTHAI and all of munitions and supplies came through there in support of USAF bases in Thailand. My father was CMSGM there.

@@TheRichram July 1967-July 1968 I was in the 4258 AEMS, radio repair. I was on flying status and flew on both the KC's and B-52 missions. What a fantastic time. All of my film and camera were stolen when I returned to the states so getting to see this is a memory rush. Started out living in hutches and later the multi story barracks toward Buda Mountain. I most likely flew in and out on one of those C-130 aircraft pictured here. Two very exciting days exactly one year apart on July 27th. I missed Bob Hopes visit, departing in July.
