I had moved to Ireland 3 weeks before these concerts and lived in slane 1km from the castle. Got residents passes for both gigs. I was still homesick up until the concerts and when he dedicated kite to his father who he had buried the day before I realised I had made my new home. 19 years later I’m still here. The most beautiful country Ireland.

Bono's father who was a big fan of opera, & a singer himself, had recently passed away. That little nugget of information really adds the emotional depth of the interlude between the two songs. It's Bono honoring and mourning his father. Would have been nice to have that context explained in this video, really adds to the performance.

that fact adds "more than a little" extra to the performance of both songs. even though "all I want is you " is a wedding song from the bride's perspective, the title can also relate to wanting someone back so badly. The same is true for "where the streets have no name", a higher ground spiritually speaking. At "13:15, he sings "sorrow or pain". that lyric is improvised to address the loss he had to go through a week earlier as well as an expression of relief for his old man. if 100,000 join in to support you get over it...what a compassionate boost.

@@Malphi1980 I was at this gig, great. We all felt for him as his father, Bobby had died and been buried the week previously plus they'd been controversy about would the second concert take place, the local authority had only licensed one concert. When this comes to an end, we hear him and "I want... all I want.....' and he sings in a sort of tenor voice paying an indirect tribute to his dad... I could hear the band start the recognizable notes of 'The Streets.....' in the background. A great moment; poignant. The previous Saturday he'd opened that song but not finished it, went almost immediately into the 'Streets.....' By the way is that song about his trip and work in famine-torn Ethiopia? (Not about the North of Ireland)

I was at that show 19 years ago. Drunk on U2 that year, I flew to London for a show there, then ferried to Dublin for this show a few days later. Streets do actually have names in Northern Ireland. 'Where The Streets Have No Name' is actually in reference to the fact that during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, and still to this day, you could be identified as either a Catholic or a Protestant simply by the street you lived on. It also has a broader meaning of course, referring to socio-economic class all over the world and then just wanting to be free from all that and live where the streets have no name.

I was at this concert. I was a mere 21 year old boy. This was the second of 2 gigs within 2 weeks at this venue. 80,000 at each gig. Bono’s father died prior to the gigs. The first gig was sober and sad but amazing, this second one was a celebration. Full of love and joy. Earlier in the day the organisers had allowed the Crowd to watch on the big screens the Irish soccer national team qualify for the World Cup. Winning and booking their place in the competition for the first time in 16 years. So the crowd was bursting at the seams with joy and celebratory mood. And the concert just ascended into a momentous occasion. A great gig.

MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

The first time I saw U2 was in 1985. Then life took over and I didn't see them again till 2000 in Dublin, Ireland at the Freedom of the City town hall where they were given the key to the city of Dublin. The next day they took some sheep to St. Stephen's Green and let them graze because you are allowed to do that as Freemen of the City of Dublin. Then I saw them twice in 2001 and then once in 2005 and 2009. Not as many times as some people, but I cherish every U2 concert because they are so good. Great reaction video. Happy to see your daughter likes U2. They truly are epic live in concert.

It remembers me their live in Paris in 2001 where I was... You have few lead singers in the world who can bring an audience to such a level of "let it go" (Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode and Jim Kerr from Simple Minds are the same kind in my opinion). I was with 2 friends who liked U2, but not as much as me (I'm about the same age as you so U2 is a part of my youth forever....) and at the end of the concert they were stunned and almost shocked by it, it was a pleasure to see their smiles in their faces... U2 concerts have a weird atmosphere of communion and happiness. The 2 most impressive things for me are the audience singing and clapping and the way Bono; even if he hasn't a "big voice", is able to bring people with him whenever he wants.... I will always remember when the lights were suddenly up in Bercy (concert hall) at the beginning of "Where The Streets Have No Name" and audience singing and wawing their arms in the air kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbN3iMSnlbSWmGw.html at 13:45, the sound and image are a bit crappy but you can see and feel how people were happy and completely insane... surely one of the best memories in my life....

The guttural wail just breaks your heart. One of the greatest, rawest musical performances ever. Can you do "One" from Live 8, or Sunday Bloody Sunday from the Rattle And Hum documentary? Around 5pm we are allowed to enter the stadium and when I settle down I realize there will be NONE standing between me and the band, I even get to rest my arms in the fence that separates the audience from the catwalk so I am gonna meet these guys just a couple of meters away. The concert starts, Edge is on my side almost 90% of the time. I get to see Bono just a couple of times but man... This is Bono!!... aaaaaand it´s my birthday. Missed the part where Bono gets some beer over him at 8:30 though... The way he handles it at 8:38 with a smile and a very spontaneous "All I want is fucking you man" (I don't think Annie knows why he said that?) just shows how very relaxed he is, surrounded by thousands and thousands of fans. To me, that's one of the reasons I love U2 and, as you said, they're one of the best live bands. You always kinda feel like you've been invited into their personal lives. Their home, even.

Hello John, One, I think it's awesome that you're introducing the Magic of U2 to your daughter and the next generation! Two, I think it's so amazing that you and your 14 yo daughter, can sit in the same room together, without a fight breaking out! The POWER of U2! Seriously, consider yourself blessed to have a relationship like that with your daughter. Three, I saw this on a Morning show, the host had a few everyday items from the distant past, the 1980's, and they had College students as test subjects. The students had to Identify what item was and operate or use it. One of the items was a rotary phone, and they had to make a phone call. Hilarious watching them trying to make a phone call. Another was a phone book, the big thick Yellow Pages phone book. They had to look up the number of a small business, I think it was a plumber, again hilarious. I think the third item was one book from a set of Encyclopedias. Maybe your son and daughter can travel back in time and identify and use different objects from the past! I think there may have been a Typewriter too.

greeting from Dublin ireland -like youe videos and great to see you introduce younger people into U2 music - just to put you straight about Where the Streets Have no Name meaning etc - I am from Dublin Ireland and can understand how mixed up the meaning and message of song can be misunderstood - but Belfast in Northern Ireland does have street names - and the issue is that people are judged by the street (catholic streets like Falls Road etc ) and so people are labelled and get treated according to where they are from - and so Bono contrasted with places in Africa like ethopia that had no street names and so you dont label people from the street names where they live - and so he used the reference to say he wanted to get to a a time where people in Nothern ireland ( like catholics who couldnt get. jobs or were treated like 2nd class citizens ) would not be treated differently just depending on the street they are from - hence get to a place where the streets have no name !! Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and all the streets have names and numbered street addresses - and are not nameless as you misunderstood. Keep up the good work ;-)

For another reaction could take a look at some 90s era U2 with zootv tour. U2 at the peak of their powers just absolutely insane, the achtung baby album has some of their best work on it. Also very cool to see the development of the band from the 80s with Joshua tree through to the 90s and into the 2000s with performances like these. Ever changing but still the biggest band in the world

Easily the greatest two songs from one if the greatest concert films ever recorded. Filmed soon after Bono's father died, which, it has been surmised, contributed to the amazing passion of the band's performance that night. And, of course, it could only have been filmed in Dublin. The segue between songs always gives me chills. Always.

Bono once said that every time U2 play Where The Streets Have No Name live its like "God walks through the room" such is the emotional connection between the band and the crowd and its hard to disagree. On every tour they have always made sure that Streets is given the perfect platform to take off in the way that it does. Another incredible version is from the Boston show from the same tour, and I would argue that the segue between Bad and Streets from that show is even better than this. I concur with all the comments about this show regarding the fact he had literally just buried his Dad a few days before. The emotion of his performance throughout the whole show added so much and the crowd, knowing what he had been through, fed off Bono's emotion and escalated this gig into the stratosphere. I think giving that context before viewing this video would have been even more impactful for your daughter when she saw it.

@@CB_Legatus Correct. In fact, Bono had been talking for several months about relating the song Kite to his dad, who had been sick. That's why I printed up a bunch of stickers to give out to people in the Heart saying, "Light up for Bono's dad at the first note of Kite" at the London 3 show, a few days prior to Slane. It worked.

It means a lot to me seeing the way you interact with your kids... the same way I do with my 17 year old son helping him understand what felt like being a teenage in the 80's and 90's. The world was so confused by then. I do hope our kids build a better reality for them after all these days of pandemic crisis. I also listen to the bands my son likes. That's an amazing exchange of ideas and experiences. Hugs to you all. Nice job. ❤

I was privileged to have attended this show just in front of the stage, a magical night Ireland had beaten The Netherlands, the weather was perfect, the crowd in sympathy with Bono on the passing of his father, the spirit was in the house and love was in the air.
