Edge is without doubt the single most influential guitarist of the last 40 years. The guy has zero ego probably why u don't like his playing. Never shows off no 'guitar Olympics' as he calls it. Its what he doesn't play that makes him so unique a player. Always the song first for Edge. Unlike almost every other player of his generation he is instantly recognisable when his music is played.

Could never say a bad thing about The Edge. Loved when he stepped in with Muse at Glastonbury to cover a U2 song (when U2 had to pull out of the show)

Always interesting to hear other's takes on songs. For me, Acrobat is my #1 of all time. The rage, the intensity, the pace, all bring about a feeling that encapsulates the idea Trent Reznor wanted to achieve with his album The Downward Spiral. Edge's solo is the epitome of a downward spiral. Also, this album was recorded during a time in Edge's life where his marriage was ending, and his world was turning upside down. The entire record walks through a relationship from beginning to end. The Love is Blindness live version is another incredible example of the band and Edge's ability to make you feel things deep inside.

I love the guitar in this because it sounds like an air raid siren. It fits with the mood of the song. The song is a kind of warning to the singer's partner that things are falling apart, and the guitar is playing that role of "warning".

Larry Mullen Jr on drums and Adam Clayton on bass don’t get enough credit in rock. They are obviously world famous but at the same time very underrated-probably because Bono and The Edge are larger-than-life/iconic & absorb all the attention. But Larry and Adam are so together as a rhythm section that they are…like…one person.

You gotta listen to ‘The Fly’ or Until the End Of The World, live version from Zoo TV. That’s of the same album Achtung Baby

The drum beat that Larry is using here is very Irish. It comes right out of traditional Irish music.

I'm surprised a lot about the selection of this song for your reaction, because this is one in particular is of those "rare gems" of U2's - very underrated IMO. your reaction is on point. 🔥🔥 Larry's drums & Adam's base hold the song together from the musical/rhythmical way while Bono's lyrics & Edge's guitar create the "chaos"...

Probably one of their best song IMO. The guitar sounds like an siren, air raid, something catastrophic coming. Lives up to some internal rage then the lyrics finish positively. I find myself in this song.

Love this song. For me it's difficult to listen to in isolation, being a deep album track it sits perfectly in the context of the 'story' the album tells. One of the very rare occasions where U2 let themselves off the chain. The churning manifesto Bono goes through here is something else.

My thoughts entirely. To me achtung baby is an abstract novel and acrobat ties side 1 to side b. Probably my favorite side 2 song. Like bono says, if edge could he would go back and re-mix every song they've ever done.

David, I suggest listening to this song live.. there are several recordings of it from their recent Sphere residency. Without all the studio production and Edge ripping that solo is a whole different thing.

I think I know why you do not like The Edge as much as many U2 fans ... the delay. The delay can be argued as Edge's signature sound. So, if you don't like it, then you don't like it. I understand you're not saying that you HATE it, but more that it's over-used. I think for the Achtung Baby album, Edge went heavy on the delay to develop a new sound. Granted, it's not his only sound, but he does lean in heavily to it on many songs, especially at the time of this album.

I don't think a lot of people like Achtung Baby, especially after Joshua Tree, but I liked it. It was different, and Mysterious Ways and One and The Fly are some of my favorites. But Joshua Tree is peak U2. Also, idk the proper way to recommend a song, but if you haven't heard anything by Alestorm you gotta check them out. In particular F*cked By An Anchor 😂

I do. I became a fan of U2 with Achtung Baby, for me is one of the 3 best albums ever (The Wall and S&M are the others). I love that "impossible guitars". The Edge took the sound to another level.

I think you may be wrong here. For hardcore , longtime U2 fans Achtung Baby is their greatest masterwork. I’m a fan of 37 years and have seen them live 13 times. Achtung Baby is my favorite album by any artist. It is perfection. I think it’s more difficult for non fans to realize what a giant, ballsy, transformation this album was. They went from wearing vests and cowboy hats, playing blues music in 1998, to the dark industrial beauty of Achtung Baby just 3 years later. The album, along with the completely light years ahead of its time, ZooTV tour was an earthquake through the music world at the time.

This song is a fan favorite but it's by no means considered a top "hit" U2 song. This song was on song number 11 on their "Aghtung Baby" album so it was tucked in at almost the last song on that groundbreaking record. The thing about U2 is that their music is a lot about the lyrics and meaning or feeling you get from their songs. I'm not sure one should judge U2's music from a musician standpoint. For instance, the guitar delay on this song is PURPOSELY heavy as it creates a "mood" for this rather dark song. Having said that, it makes sense that you would feel this way about "Acrobat". You should know that this song was NEVER played on their tour for this album and it was never really fully performed until their 2018 "Experience and Innocence" tour due to fan demand to hear this song live.

Nice review - I agree with you that the atmosphere was a little overdone on this track, but to be fair they recorded it in a massive ballroom in an old hotel in Berlin so maybe they were a little too into the location inspiration. The Edge had just gone through a divorce, so the solo is kind of an emotional rip, so to speak. This song really came into its own live on the last couple of tours, after they hadn't played it in ages. You might appreciate the live take more: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ec1-dtNmu6yap6s.htmlsi=s39rsJNN4wLwSWuw&t=148
