Early 90's U2 during the actung baby and zooropa albums was their absolute prime. The stage presence and energy they had was phenomenal.

This tour was incredible to watch, was lucky to go three times. U2's rhythm section is criminally underrated, their atmospheric sound is impossible without a strong rhythm section. Edge's approach to the sound on this tune was Bono asking him to 'put the war in Central America through your amp'

This was the Zoo tv tour in 92 . Arguably the most influential stadium tour of all time. U2 were the first band to have that run way into the crowd. They were the first to go for the screens everywhere and multimedia overload. Every stadium show you see today takes influence from zoo tv The song was about the war in El Salvador. Bono told Edge to put El Salvador through the guitar amp. Bono had visited there in 1985. It’s the 4th track on The Joshua Tree. Great review 👌

Absolutely it was a incredible live show, grunge wasn't the only rock music selling out stadiums then as U2 proved along with a few others bands at that time.

@@darensparksthing is with U2 you have had all these scenes over the years and U2 never belonged to any of them, they stood on their own. Scenes come and go, bands in those scenes come and go. I think it’s probably the reason u2 have lasted so long, that and always reinventing themselves to a younger generation

Never let it be said that The Edge can't shred. He absolutely can....when the song calls for it. The solo for "Bullet" has changed multiple times over all the subsequent tours. My favourite is from the 2005 Vertigo Tour, where he turned into a Chicago blues solo, something you'd hear Buddy Guy play.

The other reason he switched to the headset microphone is because you will note he finishes this song out on their B-stage in the middle of the crowd - the song that follows this one during the concert was Running to Stand Still which, if you are not aware, is a slower burn/quieter song that builds up into one of the most astonishing crescendos and demonstrations of 90s-Bono's vocal ability. But he had to be alone out there to pull it off as he did. I recommend checking that performance if you get a chance. Thanks for the review !

Such a great performance of this song. For me it sits parallel to the PopMart Mexico version where The Edge makes more use of the Wah-Wah. Regarding the guitar solo...that was The Edge channelling the Jimi Hendrix in him....great solo.

Watching this song with the next one (Running to Stand Still) really puts the performance into context. Great reaction. You really do break it down with your taste and experience about music. 8.2, Bono would love that score!!! U2 lives in the livesphere. They are first and foremost a live band even though they take years to make an album!

Perfect literary trio: the hellscape of bullet the blue sky (whether externally or internally forced upon one's self) into running to a standstill- the daily cyclical search for an escape from said hellscape- this case it's heroin addiction, streets have no name- searching and finding that lasting peace one is so desperate for. To watch it play out live musically and theatrically is, for lack of better word, amazing.

Fun Fact: Bono wrote this song in regards to the Reagan administration’s foreign policy in South America. Bono asked the edge to put what he thought the sounds of the fighter jets would be through his amplifier….he nailed it IMO. This live version is funked up from the original recording. The live performance from “Rattle & Hum” is truer to the album version. You should check it out Dave!!!

Most of U2's songs gotten better as live performances over the years. The album recordings become literally obsolete. Bullet The Blue Sky is no exception. Your next stop should be a live version of 'Exit' from Paris 1987. In my opinion, their finest 'jam' song. And also their darkest, the most depressing in their catalogue.

A lot of Edge's sound is based on them only having one guitarist. Maybe they should have brought in another, but Bono isn't really a guitar player, even though he can respectably strum his way through a lot of songs. So Edge designed a "bigger, fuller" sound to account for that, and delay was a big part of it. It's not just the settings on the equipment either though. I've seen great guitarists get the setting straight and still sound wrong when they try to play one of Edge's riffs. You'd need to have his right hand and everything connected as well to it to imitate perfectly.

This version felt a bit “jazzed up” compared to how it was played when the song was originally released on the Joshua Tree tour. It was written after Bono was angered by how locals were adversely affected by US military intervention in El Salvador. He asked the edge to put El Salvador through an amplifier. Quite often Bono will add some speech to the third verse section to highlight some relevant conflict that is going on somewhere. The version from the Rattle and Hum film is worth a view also as it’s more how the song originally felt: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y91xZsRhzM_TfJc.htmlsi=ed_Q68d198gJOEws

Agree about the jazzed up feeling, don't hate it though. Interesting that both their earlier live performances of this and also the version they did in Dublin in 2017 that I saw, we're both much more like the album. More menace in the song I think

The reason why Edge’s solo sounds like such a departure on this iteration of the song, is because they did this song with a nod to Jimi Hendrix. Granted, Edge is still making use of trampling delay, but he’s using a a distorted Strat with a way pedal. The only change he could have made was to use a Fuzz Face in lieu of distortion, which would have drastically changed the overall sound of the song.

Unless someone else has queued up a U2 request, the next one was put on the books last month. May will be Electric Co (US Festival 1983). June will be Until the End of the World (Slane Castle 2001). Then July will most likely be LiB (Sydney 1993). So ... if all goes as planned, it will be coming up; it just won't be the very next one. Ballads typically aren't David's most favorite thing in the world, so I was trying to "grease the wheels" going into LiB.

If you want to appreciate an extended version of this song you should see and listen to the version U2 - October/Bullet The Blue Sky (Live in Paris 2015)... The Blue Sky This song is covered by many hard rock and heavy metal bands such as Sepultura on their covers EP Revolusongs, by POD on their album The Fundamental Elements of Southtown and Queensrÿche on their album Take Cover and others.

Back in the early 2000s I got a compilation CD (can't remember where from) called Corrision. It's got a great cover of this by a band called Payable on Death, I didn't know for years it was actually a U2 song! Was a great CD, introduced me to so many great metal and rock bands of that time period (System of a down, Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, even bands like Anthrax and The Pixies were on there).

I still don't get why people request live versions first for reactions. I know, live performances are cool and the energy and stage performances can be amazing and get you pumped. However, the nuances and sounds and clarity of the original studio recording are usually lost. Live performances are way better when you know the song and can better appreciate how it looks and sounds live. Having said that, this one is quite good.
@stevesmith4600
@stevesmith4600 4 ай бұрын
I do not disagree with your fundamental principle. Hearing the studio version prior to the live one provides a baseline that can help someone understand just how good/bad or creative/lackluster the live execution was. However, song request queues are (have been) pretty long. Because I'm not a patient person, I use my once-a-month prioritized request to jump the queue. I'm not going to burn two months worth of requests to do a studio version, wait a month, and then request the live version I really wanted. That being said, I think U2's a solid live-band. If they can't deliver something great live, then likely the studio version is just showing off the talent of their production team (Eno, Lillywhite, Lanois, Flood, Jacknife , etc...).

If there is any stealing or "shout out" in this song - for the album version anyway - it has to be "Stranglehold". U2 and the Nuge generally aren't associated with each other, but the album version of the song reminds me of a watered-down "Stranglehold". Watered-down musically. I like "Bullet the Blue Sky" a lot better either way.

Okay, so this has bugged me. like you David and your reactions are solid, but I find it kinda insane that you haven't heard of many of these songs. I'm not a huge U2 fan I'm shocked you have heard this song. I'm a huge fan of Tool and how can you be someone that is a musician of a similar type of music and not heard tool songs.
