Bono does a shout out to Larry Mullen Jr who is in attendance at March 1, 2024 show at The Sphere in Las Vegas, NV
Note: Due to copyright concerns from UMG, the performance of Beautiful Day is not included with this video.
This video is presented as news and reporting on a public interest story (this is the first time that Larry Mullen Junior has been seen in proximity of the band since the recording of the Atomic City music video in September 2023). Bram is such an amazing drummer and so glad the guys picked him. With that said.... Could you Imagine how hard it must have been for Larry to sit and watch the band he got together way back in the 70s play without him? It's like a guy injured in NHL hockey (or any sport for that matter) who has to sit on the sidelines while his team is playing for the Stanley Cup. My heat goes out to him! He'll be back...and Bram will welcome it with open arms. Both true gentlemen!

That snippet of "Gloria" is the perfect icing on the "Beautiful Day" cake; thematically, they fit so well together. End with the "Blackbird" snippet (as U2 as have been doing with "Beautiful Day" for years), and you end with a blessing for spiritual renewal. U2's melding of themes together throughout a concert always is awe-inspiring; only Springsteen arguably does it as well as U2. This concert begins with human beings alienated from God ("I cannot find you") and ends with a blessing for spiritual renewal.

Which song suggests a person can't find God (or conversely, God can't find them)? The show opens with Zoo Station, which is more about materialism than a relationship with God.
@cw9817
@cw9817 4 ай бұрын
@@kenrosenberg2485 the show opener is technically not "Zoo Station," but an untitled song that is partly pre-recorded and partly sung by Bono live as he walks on the stage. It is a revised version of the show opener that they used in the very early days of Zoo TV, back in 1992. Some say that it is either based on, or inspired by, an old Irish folk song. It evokes imagery of humanity in the garden of Eden and separation from God. It's a fitting opening for a tour focusing on Achtung Baby, which for a time was to be titled Adam, and which has as its central theme humanity's tendency to fall away from God. Regarding "Zoo Station" itself, I, for one, have never seen any themes of materialism in it. Bono himself said back in the '90s that Achtung Baby begins with birth and ends with death. "Zoo Station" contains birth/baby imagery ("I'm ready/Ready for the push/In the cool of the night/In the warmth of the breeze//I'll be crawling around/On my hands and knees"), a subway setting ("just two stops down the line"), and pointers to God as well ("You know I'm under the sign of your love"). The sphere shows arguably play upon this by opening the song visually with a gigantic cross. Now I do see materialism on one level in "Even Better Than the Real Thing" ("We'll slide down the surface of things"), but not "Zoo Station." "Zoo Station" instead is largely concerned with not missing something over the passage of time-my thought back in the '90s was that it conveyed Bono's fear of missing his child's birth, although I don't really hold to that interpretation now. Bono's imagery of crawling is one he frequently uses with relation to God, particularly back in '90s songs; see the added live coda to "One" and the single version of "If God Will Send His Angels" for other examples. And in terms of Achtung Baby ending with death, "Love Is Blindness" was inspired by a horrific Dublin car bombing. Bono wrote, or at least started on, the song during the Rattle and Hum era.

I saw this show at Sphere on January 31. Bono was in incredible voice that show even hitting high notes he hasn’t hit in years and doing so with perfect pitch. As far as it being a young man’s game, well hell. All of us were much better in our 20s and 30s than we are in our 60s. It’s just that back. Then, we didn’t have the wisdom, nor the experience to know how to use our talents fully so there’s value in seeing more experienced musicians.

Last night of an EXTENDED gig, his voice may be a bit off. But when you have a tiny phone mike with thousands of people singing along in a venue like the Sphere, it's not going to sound as good as being there. Not many folks can hit the same notes in their 60's as they could in their 30'40's. I was there a couple a weeks ago, & his range isn't as good as it was, but he has better pipes than a majority of his contemporary singers.
@fang_uk
@fang_uk 4 ай бұрын
Not only that, I think people are mistaking the acoustics being picked-up in videos as an accurate representation of what it sounds like in the venue. That’s not the case. The DB tech is hyper-focused, so an omni mic is never going to accurately reproduce what it sounds like in-venue.

I agree. I love U2, and have done for many years, seeing them on ZooTV, Elevation at Slane and 360 tours, and as incredible a venue as the Sphere is, the stage feels disconnected from everything - including the audience. I think a semi-circular stage the length of the staging area arking out into the audience would have worked far better. I acknowledge none of them are as young and lithe as they once were, but there are times where even Bono feels constricted by the dimensions of the deck. Other than that, I’m real proud of them for being the band to kick off the Sphere. Definitely the right choice - also, talking of “right choices”, absolute kudos and respect to the lovely Bram for stepping up and killing it every night. 🥁

This is basically done by comparing the air sound with the originally intended sound and put that diff on the EQ - instrument by instrument. I've been doing that manually (with my ears only) in an old church-like building - and I am a singer, not mixer - we had none. We dropped all echo and reverb effects as well. The result wasnt perfect but a real cool feeling. The audience confirmed! This manual proc took 2 hours.... I expect them to have some digital processors for faster results. 🤪🥸🤘

Ridiculous like all the dinosaurs of their period who persist in not wanting to be just an old memory. These people don't do it for the money anymore I'm sure it's just all they are. I appreciated U2 from Boy Girl to The Joshua Tree, seen them around Europe in small and energetic shows until they believed in what they were doing then I canceled them, it's been a long time.
