Classic microphone shootout, Neumann U47, Stam Audio SA-47, Peluso 2247. There are plenty of "clones" on the market now so I thought it would be a great idea to test some of them out. None of the Stam Audio or Peluso are really clones since none of them has the V14 tube, but both claim that they have nailed the sound of the U47. Watch to find out!

Wow, I really feel like the differences were more obvious on the u87 shootout. But again the Stam has this tiny tiny bit of clarity/highend which may not be that "warm" but gives it a really nice clarity (was even my favorite on the u87 shootout)

I just ordered 2 Stam SA-67s. The performance and the price considered they are a great value IMO.

I owned a Peluso 2247SE for a while. It’s a nice mic. I used it as a room mic for small orchestra, cello, trumpets, countless female and male vocals. Both the Peluso and the Stam are missing a little something, although I don’t think you’d notice it as much if the original wasn’t right there. The Peluso was missing some of that bottom end and the Stam was missing a bit of clarity. I’ve worked with a FleA 47. That’s a really nice sounding clone, but higher in price than the Peluso. Nice video.

The U47 was the clear winner, the smoothe signal is still unmatched. The Stam Audio SA-47 was a bit harsh. The Peluso 2247 was the closet to th U47 in my ears. Price wise I would go with the Peluso but if price was no issue I would go for the U47.

P.S. Thanks for sharing! The Peluso and the Stam Audio mics sounded good for the money :) I would like to see a shoot out with the Peluso P87 and the Neumann U87!

Peluso has a nice top end. But the STAM sounds good also. I can go with either. Thanks for the comparison video.

For me, I could hear a difference in the unmixed vocal samples between the mics, and in that instance I preferred the Neumann, as the other two had a crisper high end. Saying that, I preferred the Stam over the Peluso. For the acoustic samples, I couldn't really hear any major differences. It would be interesting to hear how the Warm WA47 compares to these.

The United is quite nice for the U47 on kick-out thing. Which is great, because not many can afford a Neumann U47 just for kick out. I reckon the United would be good for drum mid-to-far room mic pair too. Again, great, because ... even less can afford a pair of Neumann U47s just for drum room mics.

I had a really hard time to pick an honest favourite when doing a true blind test. After knowing which one was which it was pretty easy to point them all out. But I would honestly not notice if someone switched the mics during tracking a song. I've done some shootouts before with some U87 clones and 414 clones. In this test here all three mics were much closer that any in the other shootouts.

For this particular singer 1st STAM 2.NEUMANN 3. PELUSO. For a singer with lots of top end and sibilance change the 1 & 2 around....is my call.

(listening on HS5s) high end of the neumann + low end of the stam seems like it would be tasty for vocals. Since I'm a low string player I can tell the stam would have too many proximity issues for me since the U47 I've tried and I know it does and it seems like the stam is more sensitive in that band, but all of them are great though... the peluso vintage sound is always nice and warm. In my experience you can get pretty close with the peluso and it holds up. I've never tried this one I would love to though. thanks for posting!

Just heard them with a couple of mates, and we all agree that the Neumann and Stam were the best (we even kinda put it at the same level of the original U47), but the Pelusso was noticeably more muffled and dull than the other two...

All great. But the way the u47 takes takes the louder vocal and smooths it out is really noticeable, whereas the Stam is slightly harsh when the vocalist digs in.

I have the Peluso.... It's a very good Mic... There's a bit cheaper equivalents these days as the markets gotten so crowded... And there's no need to try to get super close to the U47..... I do really like a tube in before the preamp phase.... And the transformer is also very nice. There are so many good options.... The output on the Peluso is perfectly fine....

None of the mics are bright or dull, but the Stam was the brightest and the Peluso the dullest. Total dif was probably 1% across the three so in a mix I could hardly hear any difference at all. I totally prefer the Stam, without regard for the price. Fortunately the Stam also wins there.

1:44 sounds like a Neumann should sound. The openness and high end detail of that mic with such softness is still slightly unrivaled, however only slightly these days. Great video/comparison.

Exactly Jef, it's that very VERY elusive balance between being articulate/open in the upper-mids/low-highs, while still sounding soft/smooth, that sets that Neumann 47 apart from any other mic I've ever listened to... I have not heard a clone yet that achieves that...

I thought the Stam audio had the closest sound to the Neumann. The Peluso sounded great too, yet had more higher frequency and high mids.

For me, the take away is that they're all good. I'd probably go with the Peluso since it costs the least and still sounded great.

Since you went to the trouble of setting up the mics for simultaneous capture, why did you not provide the same clips for direct comparison? It makes it impossible to reliably accurately compare them. Would be nice to make the original full resolution files available to us.

for vox, neumann, for vox and instruments all round i choose Stam, got that extra high end sound to it

I think there is still some slight harshness in the sound of both clones. This might come from the capsules used. A good M7 capsule could solve the problem. Thiersch Elektroakustik is producing a good M7 capsule from what I've read but never tried one...Gefell is also producing a good M7 capsule but is not sold separately just used in some of the mics from their lineup. I've tried the M71s from Gefell and that mic sounds so smooth, I believe it comes from that M7 capsule with PVC membrane.

The Peluso 2247 is closer to the Neumann U47. On the vocals, listen to the forwardness around 1Khz-2Khz and the body around 400hz and bellow and you'll notice how much the Stam Audio SA-47 is different from the two others mis. It's not night and day, but it's there. But both 3 mics are great!

I’m listening to this test on my iPhone 6s and I can really ear the differences... even with my poor and used ears... compared to the 2 others, the Pelusso sounded “cheap”. Compared to the Neumann, the Stam sounded so bright. Compared toothe two other, the Neumann sounded neutral/natural.

Don´t know why, but many times after a pop song is mixed, vocals sound harsh in high frequencies like these Stem and Peluso, even recorded with u47.

Neumann sounds the best, has that nice sweet roll off on the highs and deep rich lows. Both the Stam and the Peluso have a harsh brital top end on the vocals, whether that could be equed off a little i dont know. Its this brital sound that I always try to get rid of which is annoying to me on a lot of mics. I guess that's why the Neumann u47 is still so sought after even with a whopping price tag.

These microphones are incredibly close! I really appreciated how you gave us the context with the piano. With the lower output of the Peluso did you find that the noise floor was an issue?

The Stam is good on softer vocal but gets shown up when sung louder, the mids get harsh and will get on your nerves after a session or two. Its a pity I was hoping it would be closer:(

The first time I listened to this stam and u47 sounded identical. Now. The peluso and u47 original sound similiar with peluso slightly duller.

Update: I had a chance to buy the peluso after watching this video and sold it. It was too dull. I bought the SA47.

Honestly, id go for the Stam. Working with a neumann u47 is just not realistic or practical at that price... i cant stand being scared to death of dropping or damaging a mic (Besides it really isnt worth it). They all sound pretty great and have that Large Diaphragm compression/Impulse response which is what im mainly looking for anyway.

i cant really hear a difference here on youtube.. i would probably hear a difference with the raw files and some time to process them. its how they react to different prosessing that makes the diffference IMHO

It seems the STAM U47 is smother sounding than the Peluso, so I'll chose the Stam for being almost identical to the Neumann

I wish you could do this shootout with the Peluso 22 47 LE. Contrary to the SE you are using, the LE has the original german tube used in the original U47, while the SE has an american style tube. I bet that makes a noticeable difference.

This isn't correct, the Peluso LE contains a metal EF tube (not a VF14 as in the original) theres a huge price difference between those tubes, the VF14 is 25 times the price (if you can find a usable one). Not knocking Peluso's work though, no clones or recreations use a real VF14 including the modern Telefunken and the Peluso's turn in a solid performance.

With his voice Stam peluso then Nuemann, noticed some sibliance on Stam and peluso but it's not the mic it's singer, just take out the siblance. You can't go wrong. The peluso opened up more when he sang with more force on the combined track. For him on that song. Stam!

Neumann has that "silky" top end. Stam sounds the most open to me and would be by first choice, both for aesthetic and economic reasons.... and let's be frank, I'd rather have a couple of Stam mics instead of 1 very good neumann.

The Pelosi is closest to the Neumann. The Stam was a bit too sibilant. Played with the voice and piano the differences were less obvoous between the three.

The low end is pretty much identical between the three. At least according to my spectrum analyser. But then of course there could be stuff that are audible but not possible to measure, maybe.

Have you tested out them capsules yet? How are they compared to the mic-parts capsules? I just heard about them and need a k67 capsule cardiod..i think i found what i been looking for. Thanks

The Pelusso was very dark... The Stam sounded best alone... in the mix... the Neumann was the clear winner.

Much creamy and detailed mids in the Neumann , do they all have a m7 capsule ? Why no test in omni , i often use this pattern ;)

@@ryancohenmusic I always prefered the M7 over KK47 in the neumann mics but i don't know about the Beezneez M7. If it's made close to the original ones no doubt you'll prefer it on vocals. Take also care in choosing the tube, don't hesitate to try different ones and record your tests. In a tube mic it can be apples and oranges !

Hi! No, the Fet Collectors edition is a re-issue made in 2014, and is not a tube microphone. This one is a vintage tube microphone..

I'd rather make great music with the stam, opposed to mediocre music with the Neumann. I hear the difference, but I could never justify the purchase. Now, if I could borrow an original, I'd be all for it. Otherwise, I'd rather spend my hard earned money on the Stam and have enough left for other mic types (FET, Ribbon, Dynamic, etc).

I guess the Stam was my least favorite in this test. Not surprisingly the original Neumann sounded a little more special than the rest. Thanks for this video it's a bit suprising to see these mics together! A nice surprise.

I thought the Peluso was the better one against the Stam on vocals, the Stam seemed kind of harsh on this vocalist at least. With the acoustic the differences were a lot more subtle.

Up to about 13k all three are almost identical when measuring the frequency. Above that Neumann is in the middle while the Peluso is just below, and the Stam is just above by about the same amount.

Stam is brighter and has less lows, mid range is different. Peluso is pretty close! Also STAM maked AMAZING 87 clone, better than Peluso.

Чертовски согласен, не понимаю почему тут все хвалят Stam, по моему скромному мнению он проиграл в этом тесте, к сожалению. Очень резкий звук, я несколько раз без проблем определил его в слепом тесте, Peluso очень близок к оригиналу. Я очень удивлен результатам, потому что в других сравнениях мне микрофоны от Stam кажутся очень качественными, особенно клон Sony C800G.

The Peluso has the least info above 13k but at around 8k the Neumann has a dip where the Peluso and Stam are more or less identical.

Intersting! It maybe have something to do with how they handle transients. To me the original sound more relaxed and "dark".
