In 1986 Curtis Knight dropped by the WWHT U68 studios in Newark to discuss his friendship with Jimi Hendrix, a friendship fraught with controversy.
NOTE: The Hendrix Estate made me delete the "Star Spangled Banner" from the closing credits. Feel free to hum it to yourself.

Man i got goosebumps!!! Back in the 90s i found a cassette of "rare Jimi sessions". It was 10 instrumental songs of Jimi jamming. An older guy i knew borrowed it and returned it a few days later saying it wasn't Jimi and there are fakes out there. I knew it was Jimi. I didn't figure it out until tonight it was Jimi jamming with Curtis!!!!! Then to find this interview and hear him explain it?!?!!! Priceless!!! I hope i can find it. I threw out most of my cassette tapes. Can't find it on ebay yet. Nobody loaded it on YT. Thx for this interview, amazing!!!

He loved Jimi so much that he guilted Jimi into doing sessions with him after he was successful. He promised Jimi that the sessions would not use his name to promote the recordings. That promise was instantly broken and those recordings have been issued illegally thousands of times as Jimi Hendrix recordings. Knight has spent the rest of his life dining out on his "friendship" with Jimi. With friends like these.....

Some of his comments do not match the historical record. Jimi was long dead when this came out and unable to call bullshit. For example, he "discovered" Hendrix, who left in the same level of fame as he found him. Indeed, Hendrix had been a sideman for years with known acts like Little Richard and The Isley Brothers. Curtis Knight is often cited as one of the many extraneous pressures on Hendrix and he has always been represented as someone who did little for Hendrix but expected a lot in return.

For anyone wondering whether to give Curtis Knight the soapbox he craved -- have YOU ever heard the "Get That Feeling" album? It was a clear case of exploitation of Jimi. The album blows goats. If you're really hot and heavy about joining Team Knight, be sure to go out and buy a copy of "Flashing first," which is just as bad. And just before you cast your ballot, you may as well blow good money on the "You Can't Use My Name" album. Curtis Knight is far from the only opportunist who took advantage of Hendrix. He's just one more of them.
@762Scott
@762Scott Жыл бұрын
Maybe the first. Add his book to your examples. Knight begins by saying he was out clothes shopping "...with the intention of buying something flash..." when he first saw Mr. Hendrix. And away he went. Exploitive narcissist.

For real. The title track off "Get that feeling" is so uninspired and was clearly thrown together with no care. Nonsense lyrics, no changes in the groove or chords. It's kinda sad to hear Jimi's playing on it (if that really is Jimi). He's still a great guitarist, but you can tell his heart isn't in it. When Curtis tells him to "play that thing Jimi" he just tosses off a few quick little phrases and gets back to playing rhythm. It's so funny to hear him in this video talk about how boxed in Jimi was with the soul circuit and then to hear that track of him not being allowed to express himself really. Playing someone else's inferior music. You can totally picture the conversation that led to that session (because you KNOW it was tossed off in one kinda crappy take): "C'mon Jimi. I could really use some help with this record. With your name on it, it would SELL! C'mon, for old times sake? Remember who gave you your start, baby!" Also, the whole track is in E standard tuning, which is funny because Jimi tuned his own guitar to Eb most of the time (more slack in the strings, easier bends). It might seem like a silly guitar nerd thing to notice, but I'll bet anything Jimi showed up to the session with no gear (or was asked to come along and didn't know there was a session) and was just handed a random guitar and told to make it work. Or he had his own strat and was told to tune to the band, which is absurd because when you play with Hendrix, you tune to HIM. Whatevs, I'm certainly anti Knight after hearing that record and watching him talk up Midnight Gypsies like a skeezy used car salesman. I've heard them and they suck.

@@WinstonErrolScholsberg Knight was too buddy-buddy with the unscrupulous Ed Chaplin, and he probably talked Hendrix into coming into the studio to help out in 1967. @@thebeatcreeper I think Curtis asked Jimi to fill in at Chaplin's request. Curtis was working for Chaplin, he was on Chaplin's side, and he knew Chaplin would use Jimi's name when he shouldn't have. Of course, Jimi shouldn't have signed that contract, but Knight wasn't helping. Chaplin paid one dollar but ended up making a million off Jimi. That might have been legal, but it wasn't ethical. The music business is vicious. Chaplin was a total prick.
