The UAD Neve 1073 Mixing Plugin is an emulation of the original Neve 1073 Channel Amplifier, which is easily the most revered preamp and EQ circuit ever designed. Introduced in 1970, this hallowed class-A, transistor mic/line amp with EQ epitomizes the beautiful "Neve sound," with unparalleled clarity, sheen, and bite.
You can track through this authentic end-to-end circuit emulation of this legendary piece of audio history, with the Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection for UAD-2 hardware and Apollo interfaces.
Color and EQ your mix with Neve tone, including all 10 distinct clipping points from the vintage 1970’s era hardware.
Control Apollo interface mic preamp gain staging and impedance directly from the 1073 plug-in with Unison technology.
Record "through" the 1073 preamp in real time using Apollo Twin, DUO, or QUAD interfaces

It's probably good, but I chose to buy an external hardware mic pre from Warm Audio. After you buy two or three of those expensive UAD plugins you could have bought a nice piece of hardware. Just my own rationalization. After that I purchased an LL2A compressor limiter from Little Labs, and the two together are KILLER!!!! Then about two months ago I purchased a Pro VLA 2 from Art (optical compressor). It's a two channel compressor, but I use only one side right now to chain behind my LL2A. I only incorporate it when I want some extra grit/warmth in the signal. I say all that to say that if you just save your money and be patient you can accumulate some nice pieces. You don't have to have the 2,500 dollar Neve mic preamp or channel strip to achieve "pro" results. Especially when there's companies like Warm Audio, Black Lion Audio, and Art out there.

I don't disagree with your thoughts. They are good ideas and valid for sure. While I am not against hardware over plugins there are some things that plugins are good at. Plugins and great for using on multiple channels at the same time for no extra cost. To record and entire band live with hardware would put the price up a lot more than the plugins. I also try to only buy pluigns when they are on sale. I try to stay away from buying full priced for plugins. The settings on a plugin can be saved in the project instead of having to document the settings of the hardware if you need t come back at a later stage. With all that said your setup sounds great.

May I ask a question please ? All my sounds are already in my Daw. I have an Apollo and the 1073. Any difference in sound in placing the plugin in the console Vs my Ableton channel ? Thanks
@kdwmixingmastering
@kdwmixingmastering 5 жыл бұрын
Great question and as far as I know it makes no difference. The only time I would use the plugin in the UAD console is if I was using Unison while recording. If the sound is already recorded then just use it as a normal plugin in your DAW.

@@kdwmixingmastering There has to be some negative to using them after the fact otherwise why would anyone record straight through them? As they would have more options afterwards if they wanted to say change the preamp or some setting. That would be almost destructive recording. Especially if you were new and botched a setting and didn't realize it until after the fact and you couldn't record it over. Half the marketing is that the emulation starts before it even hits the converters. So I would assume you would get more out of recording through it.
@kdwmixingmastering
@kdwmixingmastering 4 жыл бұрын
@@TriWaZe I was referring to using it in the Console but not in Unison. I cannot see any difference in that regard really. I guess you could get your audio a bit louder in the recording if you already EQ'd out the low end or something but otherwise I don't see any difference. Now if you use it in Unison mode then that is entirely different. Unison mode is claimed to change all the properties of the pre-amp, gain stage and various other factors when you are recording. It is meant to make your pre-amp sound like the original unit. So if you have a UAD device with Unison pre-amps then I would highly recommend that you use this plugin or one of the other many Unison plugins to get the sound you are after during recording and not just in mixing. Thanks for the great comment.

In unison, the plug in can be tracked through to save dsp in your session without using system memory. It can be committed to do requires you to understand the settings that you are baking into your incoming signal. In the session on a track, the software behaves like any other plug in layering ontop of your signal but still uses mostly the dsp in the apollo. Commitment is required if you want to save memory etc.

Why are you going to the top to turn it on and off to get a balance when there is an off switch right below the volume knob.Good video by the way very helpful and I have learned a lot from watching you explain how it works. Explaining the volume control at the bottom and the slider was very interesting.

Thanks for the kind words. It is really just a habit I have formed. A lot of plugs don't have on/off switches in them so I got use to using the Bypass feature in Cubase. I have also found some plugins don't fully disable themselves with their own buttons. For example some plugins keep the volume changes when you use their bypass buttons whereas the Cubase button stops everything. That is not the case with this plugin but as I stated it is just a habit.

Maybe for you people that just want a quick solution or for someone to tell you the settings to put it on so you can just copy and paste. This is a longer video because he was speaking slowly and throughly, so viewers could absorb the info. He also was showing multiple ways to use this, and explaining every function of it so we can know what each knob is doing and why you’d want to adjust them based on the result you want. This is for those that want to understand the true functionality of the plug-in not just know what settings they should put it on.

With Analog emulation plugins the changes can be very subtle and sometimes you need really good studio monitors to hear it. I would take a guess that KZfaq compressing the audio is also a major factor to why you might not hear a difference.

I don't know for sure it is YT affecting the sound. It was just a possible reason. The other reason is that I could just have done a bad job showing this plugin. That has happened on occasion and I accept that and try to improve. Thanks for the feedback.

Can you hear the difference from listening from a phone no buds I don’t think so
@kdwmixingmastering
@kdwmixingmastering 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think so either. Even though it makes no difference on a phone without buds we mix and record for the best situation we can, within reason and budget. If I was to do things purely for the sound of a phone listener then it would sound horrible on a decent audio system. Just so I am clear I am not a snob when it comes to recording or mixing. I strive to get better results all the time because I enjoy it and it is a passion of mine but I have no problem with people recording songs on their phone and releasing it as is. Creating music is the end goal. I don't care what gear you have. A good vocalist or musician will sound good through anything. A bad vocalist or musician will sound bad through anything as well. This plugin will not save a bad artist or performance. Thank you for watching and sharing your opinion.

Every in depth information, but the industry standard is using hardware to track vocals, i use a real neve hardware micpre, any pro engineer can easily discern a hardware micpre from a software micpre no matter which software micpre is being used and that will never change no matter how advanced computers or software become.
@kdwmixingmastering
@kdwmixingmastering 5 жыл бұрын
While I respect your comment and are not going to argue about the real hardware versus software, not everyone can afford a real Neve PreAmp and not everyone can record in a real studio. It is nice to have a more affordable option for people to use at home or live that can give decent results. Thanks for watching and providing your thoughts and experience I appreciate it.

I agree in the sense that recording **through** a preamp (and a gentle but grabbing compressor) makes a big difference. And of course a Neve preamp is one of the best solutions available, but the big difference lies is recording a "raw" signal vs a "slightly massaged and from the get-go already good"signal.

@@Tazmanian_Ninja I been engineering over 20yrs. The hardest part of the lesson was I can't bring a GO-CART to the race track and compete against the formula 1 race cars, if you can't afford a formula 1 race car common since is not to race at all, i had the purchase hardware or get out of the game, no pro will take me serious with just software plug-ins in my studio, the hardware is what make them come to the studio, they don't come because of the plug-ins i own, and that took half of my 20yrs. To learn.
