uAvionix AV 30 Calibration of Magnetometer

This is the procedure for calibrating the built in magnetometer., in the AV30 display used with the Tail Beacon-X. It took us three tried to get the proper result.

I just had a pair of these installed in my 172-N and the vac system removed. By default, the DG does not use the magnetometer and drifted about 5* per 30 minutes, which is better than a mechanical gyro. I was happy with that, but just for fun I enabled the internal magnetometer (set AID mode to MAG1) and then calibrated it similar to how you did it here. All turns standard rate (2 minutes per 360). For the first calibration I made my turns R, R then L, L and the drift was worse than the default of not using the magnetometer! I calibrated a second time making the turns alternating: L, R, L, R and the result was much better.

Did you have yours in MAG1 or MAG2? Also I’m wondering why when the DG is function locked there is no way to adjust heading after it drifts

Sorry I am not sure but I think it is Mag 1 I also think the latest updates improve the function. I just this week installed the latest version and it now retains the altimeter setting after restart.

What are you using for a DG and the OBS heading adjust?. Also, does the AV 30, heading bug move to indicate what the GPS has it set to, or the DG has it set to? Example: I know you can't set the OBS bug or heading bug on the AV 30. But does it at least show what the bug is? , assuming the bug was set by the DG OBS , or the bug was set GPS itself due to direct to hdg mode .

I still have my old HSI 100 for a primary DG. The AV 30 is a great stand by and has a built in magnetometer which works fairly well and it also gets in put from my GPS. My GI275 is also a magnetic compass as it has a magnetometer connected. So hopefully I don’t get lost. I have lots of redundancy. Two artificial horizons, three altimeters, and 5 directional sources. And you can set the heading on the AV 30.

@@Gord001ca Thanks for reply. I looked anbd no one has a video of the AV30 using a GPS. not even the Factory videos. Odd. The he AV 30 has no OUTPUT DATA lines at all. . It is rs232 input only. So whatever you set the bug on it to, does not get transmitted out to anything. The heading you set in it is really just a reminder reference. You would likely manually set it to match what the real DG HDG bug you have set to is . However, it is not clear if the HDG bug in the Av30 can be set by the GPS unit if the AV30 is in GPS trk mode. For instance, if you are in GPS trk mode on the av30 and you change the GPS "Direct to", flight plan on your GPS , does the Av30 bug move to reflect what the heading Bug is from the GPS? This would be more of a MFD type action by the av30. Which is a bit odd, because lets say you are in GPS trk mode on av30 and it does display the GPS HDG bug the GPS is currently following. Then you go into the AV30 and try to manually change the HDG bug, which I know you can do. But What does the AV30 do? does it ignore the manual input you are trying to make, or does it override the GPS trk input HDG bug from the GPS and change the display? Seems to me to handle this issue the manufacturer probably made it so the only way to manually set the HDG bug on the Av30 requires AV30 not be in GPS trk mode. Do you still have vacuum system installed?
