What the ford ceo isn’t mentioning is that the average worker basically LIVES at a plant to make anywhere near that amount of money, and that’s the issue! Auto workers don’t want to waste away working 12hr shifts 7 days a week just to make 70-90k. What the greedy CEOs don’t understand is that autoworkers actually want to have lives outside of the plant.

You have to consider benefits and profit sharing in the equation. UAW has the gold standard for Healthcare, and those profit sharing checks are much more than the average American worker gets, if they get one at all. Bottom line is, if the job is so bad, and you're treated so horribly, why stay?

The Big 3 will pack up and go to Mexico. The workers labor is worthless without the billion dollar factories, machines, tools, HR, retirement, workers comp, training , marketing, etc… The investors risk billions financially. If the company goes out of business it’s the investors that go bankrupt and owe billions. The one that takes the financial risk gets the financial reward. If the workers want to risk billions, they are free to start their own company set their own profit margins. Until then, they voluntarily choose to work for a company. The reason they don’t leave is because they have no other skills. You can’t have limited skills and also make demands. It’s a global market and the competitors like Toyota don’t have Unions and have lower costs. Their vehicles are cheaper and better made. The Big 3 have to compete with this reality. That’s why strikes do not work. It will result in billions lost meaning even less money for employees.

COLA adjustments to the base pay rate are necessary because the real inflation rate will likely persist for longer than anyone suspects. The companies are paying the workers with dollars that are rapidly losing their purchasing power due to the devaluation of the US dollar in real terms. Meanwhile, executive compensation has been increasing at a high multiple of the proposed increases to the UAW workers compensation. They make sure that they are not falling behind in real terms. UAW workers have fallen far behind in real terms over the last four year contract. They do not want to get locked in to another four years where nominal wage increases are only a fraction of the real inflation rate. This is a guaranteed loss in real terms. Do not be fooled by the numbers. A 15 percent increase over the four year agreement is less than 4 percent per year. The real aggregate compound inflation rate in the US will likely be far higher than that over the life of the next four year contract.

@@bllasae - Yes, that is true, of course. I did not properly word my comment above. Instead of simply saying that COLA adjustments are necessary, I should have been clear in writing that the UAW workers WANT the COLA adjustments for their base pay because inflation destroys the value of their compensation over time. They feel that the COLA adjustments are necessary in the new contract agreement because of the general level of inflation experienced for the last few years. I was just trying to explain why this is a compensation benefit they want to regain. Inflation is a function of the federal government’s fiscal and monetary policies and actions. This includes the actions of the Federal Reserve, obviously. The automakers have no control over this, nor any responsibility for the resulting devaluation of the US currency. But they benefit if they can lock in employee compensation for four years without having to adjust for inflation.

I am a union worker. My job cannot be done by a robot. An awful lot of UAW employees have been replaced by robots and every year that number increases. It's all due to wage disputes with the employers. But there has to be a balance. And the UAW President talking about actual dollar figures when he talks about profit is a false argument. The only factual number is percentage of sales. $26 billion sounds like a lot but if it is only a 4% profit margin then it isn't healthy. Now I don't know the actual number, but just the fact he is using a dollar figure throws his whole argument into question. Just use real numbers and then let's see if the employers are doing the right thing or not. If they are and the union still gets a wage increase, then eventually all these businesses will be gone.

They want cola to stay suspended when you get time and half an double time pay on that and get it every week and if it’s better for the bonus then why wouldn’t the company just say oh ok ya want this instead and that’s cause they know it’s better and it’s really simple if it’s so expensive to go over to ev how about they don’t try to become another Tesla as we already have one of those type of car companies and no one really wants electric cars not in the numbers they are bout to be attempting to build and if the government is so hell pressed on pushing that agenda then maybe we need to vote some new individuals in there places cause just cause it’s good for California don’t mean it’ll work in northern Michigan or Minnesota.

Yes the CEOs are WAY WAY WAY over paid. As for the unions, most American workers are not in Unions and have no chance of joining a union so they have to pay benefits to others which they do not have. Unions are nothing but government sanctioned labor monopolies. The only way a union works is to get in and make sure the door closes behind you and no one else gets in. The only answer it to get rid of the overhead of union management and unions all together and make the minimum wage 40 dollars an hour and make social security pay what union pensions pay. Monopolies need to be shut down. Anyone ever heard of inflation?
