What a great band they were. What a sound. British reggae. And by that what I mean is, black and white going to school together, playing together, going to each others houses for their teas, influencing each other with their music and culture. Then leaving school into the screaming shitstorm that was the Britain of the late 70s early 80s. Their political conscience and their chronicling of the social injustices of those times still stands up all these years later. So sad they went the commercial route later in the 80s.

Always loved ub40 from when i bought Signing Off in 1980. Their early stuff was political, haunting and mesmeric. . bought all their albums and singles. . seen them live many times. . sadly they succumbed to 'pop reggae' and infighting. That's what happens sometimes unfortunately. Fell out of love with them when they fell out with each other, but listening to this reminds of why i loved them so much for so many years. Its like looking at a picture of your old girlfriend and the memories come flooding back. This Peel Session is truly sublime. They were so unique and ahead of their time.

Apparently 'Food for thought' was recorded in a room in Birmingham whilst putting 10p pieces into a meter to keep the power going to finish the recording cant get anymore punk and DIY than that can you? pity they turned into such a shit generic 'Marley by numbers' dreadful 'cod reggae act' in the intervening years then again the civil servants lapped them up which says it fucking all , sell out cunts!

@@dermot51 The thing is they became what they hated. Songs like 'Little by Little' encapsulated their view of capitalism and the rich .... then when they made a few bob they became what they were fighting against for so many years. The irony? They fell out over money. Says it all really ....

I was a massive fan back in the day. Without doubt ‘signing off’ was their finest and one of the greatest albums of all time. Maybe because I’m from Birmingham just made me love them even more. They were at their best singing about politics, race and world issues. Listening to this great session takes me back to being a young lad again, hanging with mates and finding out about the world. Seen them a few times live, shame how it all ended up, the falling out etc, but these early days were just bliss!

Signing Off - When this was released, I was actually a student in the good old days when we could sign on during the summer hols. I think we got about £15 a week and thought we were millionaires! I wish I'd kept my old UB40 card. Universal Credit just doesn't have the same vibe !!! Still got the vinyl album though. It's funny to think there are generations now who would have no idea what the actual UB40 was. Such a great band. Back in the day they sent my sister a sheet of paper with all their signatures on. Much treasured. They were also the reason I started playing bass guitar.

Late 70s early 80s I was only a kid but our flat was always filled with the sounds of dub ska n reggae , been allowed sit out on the steps with the teenagers all the ska n skin heads was too cool, then getting my first taste of the fashion (thanks Mam n Dad) ...wasnt allowed go for the skinhead look lol so it was black jeans white polo top white socks and my first ever harrington jacket n loafers ...then the teenagers bringing me back my ska patches (mam used to stitch all their patches for them) .... i used to feel 10feet tall sat out on those steps! Music and memories with me for life!

I think you and I might be long lost brothers. I totally identify with what you say. Because I did the same. The Mod revival and two tone/ska happened when I was 10/11 - wasn't allowed a skinhead but I too had the Harrington and later pilot jacket, all the rest of the gear. I cherish that time because it marked my awakening to music and what it could mean.

Phil Jackson Got to agree there Phil that 80/81 period was magic. Was never as good after. Signing Off , Present Arms and UB44 were magic. Then it all changed. There were some good songs that came after and i like the Rat in Mi Kitchen album but no where near as good. the 90's onwards has been embarrassing and that country album in 2013 was a kick in the teeth for fans.

I was listening to a Vibracobra "Beat" session which I was really digging while I was under my truck(changing gear oil.... So when this group came on I was like thinking..."", this is pretty damn good". So out I come from under the truck to discover..... UB40, UB40!! I could'nt beleive it! Only thing I know of UB40 is that wine song, not one of my favorites to say the least.SO! point being... 1. happy surprises, 2. don't go around with a closed mind, 3.Like when I was a young man interesting things happen at 3 A.M. !!

Early UB40 was in a different league. Hearing this back in 1979/80 was mind blowing for me as a 13yr old
