Uberleben makes decent rods and the Tinderwick is decent, but, you’re right about the striker being crap. They need to not worry about it having a cap lifter, hex wrench, carrot peeler, etc. I’ve also found that a bit of hockey tap makes the striker more comfortable
@prepperinthewoods2 жыл бұрын
That’s the same rod I use. It’s one of the better ones I have experience with. Nice outtakes

I like the octagon shape. I used to think they were all the same until I got a Bayite Ferro rod. Now I'm converted. The only time I get those speed bumps is when I use the default hacksaw blade striker... A decent sharp spine like my MK Tribute or Mora Eldris seem to keep it smooth. I'm glad you were able to scrape it out, in the past I've had to put them on the sander lol. Fun video. Thanks for sharing. Stay healthy brother

Thanks Sean, the speed bumps were the worst thing about the Exotac, sorry the second worst thing after getting shavings not sparks!!!!

@@RobEvansWoodsman lol I have a few soft ones like that. Originally it annoyed me when I was trying to look all expert like Mors lol. Now I like them for inclement conditions. I slow scrape off a bunch of metal match material and fast scrape a flare to ignite it like those magnesium blocks. The right tool for the right job, plus I hate to throw away tools lol. Thanks for sharing

I will stick with the LMF as Mors method is my favourite. However I found it really useful to pair with Uberleben Tindarwick, especially in very cold conditions or when lighting wood stoves. Really enjoy your videos, thanks Rob

I got a long thick fero rod from China for £18 about 3 years ago, it's got exactly the same striker as that one, but has a very nicely braided paracord lanyard & works extremely well. Lights first time almost every time 😎

My big thick one came from eBay several years ago and it isn't bad, far better than the TBS ones.

The only problem with a harder ferro rod is they need a very sharp striker to work well. Using a LMF with a spine that's a bit blunt is hopeless. A softer rod is more forgiving in that regard.

Before I even get into the video I can tell you with 100% confidence that the uberleben rod you have will outperform just about any exotac rod around. Their strikers are also outstanding!!!

I totally agree mate, there's a guy in Oregon, Wilson custom knives, he's making some interesting hollow handle knives also matchsafe and hollow handle ferrorods.

@@philleath-dawson2113 don't bother mate import duties would be a killer, just not worth it, the ferrorods could be crap and If I'm not mistaken they only come in green. I asked him about one of his knives a year or two ago but he didn't have it in stock and hadn't decided when he'd make more so I left it, just as well because it wasn't cheap!

Hi Rob, you look to have a good ferro rod there, plenty of long lasting hot sparks coming from that, it's probably worth the money when you consider how much usable rod you get compared to a LMF rod, and I like the idea of flat sufaces to scrape from, as most of mine didn't work at their best until I'd worn a flat on them, if you would be so good as to give us a heads up on how it's doing in a few weeks time, it would be appreciated. Cheers mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
@RobEvansWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
I'll be using it to light a fire tomorrow, it's been given a carbide striker and a "go faster stripe"! You'll see what I mean next week when the video comes out.

I've heard claims the ridges on the ferro rod come from the angle of the scraper on the rod, they usually say if its at 90° itll cause those ridges but I didnt see you holding the knife at 90° to the rod. Your thoughts?

I may have held it at a different angle when I was "going for it".

@@RobEvansWoodsman When I'm in the garden lighting the BBQ the bic is fine... if it doesn't work I'll just grab another. But when I'm 2h into a hike up a mountain and the bic doesn't work, I sure am glad if I also brought the more reliable ferro rod, even if the ferro rod requires more skill and preparation before use.
