I spent a summer reading all of Philip K. Dick's works. Ubik was one of my favorites. He had one of the most creative minds in the sci-fi world.

Here's the link again to my Philip K. Dick playlist. It doubled in size since we last talked. I scoured and scrolled so deep I reached a statement saying NO MORE RESULTS! (for audio books). Jonathan, thank you, as always, for all your videos. Particularly, Ubik is my first P. K. Dick read and I loved it! I believe it's not perfect, but I cannot give this work less than 5 stars in order to reflect my enjoyment. Just by reading this book it is obvious that Dick was a brilliant mind. So creative! So defiant! So disruptive for the time it was conceived and written (60s decade). You can clearly see that huge modern blockbusters (Matrix, Inception) are inspired on wonderful creations from decades before, such as this "Ubik" one. Hugs!

I've read many many of his books, and also helped with transcription of his hand written journals, and this is definitely my favorite. Literally just looked it up cause I bought a copy for someone, and I wanted to see what other people thought.

I loved Ubik and am a fan of PKD's books in general and the ideas they bring. Minority Report is another film adaptation which PKD wrote as a short story more than 10 years prior to Ubiq, with the interesting idea of a "Dept of Precrime" where they apprehend murderers before they actually commit the act - predicted by 'precogs', people who have the ability to see the future. There are quite a few films you see with his ideas embedded in them. The recent netflix series "1899" kind of reminded me of "A Maze of Death" if you watch to the end - I won't spoil it .. I'm about to start "Martian Time-Slip" and am keen to see what ideas that brings.

Thanks for all the info Colin! I have since read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? And A Scanner Darkly and really enjoyed them. I need to rewatch the film of A Scanner Darkly as I remember liking it a lot. I recently finished 1899 and enjoyed it so I will need to check out A Maze of Death!

I have read quite a few Philip K Dick books. My favourite is ‘A Scanner Darkly’ which I thought was better than the movie. I enjoyed ‘Ubik’ but I was underwhelmed by ‘Man in the High Castle’ Other favourites in ‘The Galactic Pot-Healer’ and ‘Time Out of Joint’.

I just finished reading this book as well and it was my first Philip K dick book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the aspects of the book and felt like it flowed very smoothly from chapter chapter. I'm definitely a big fan of Science Fiction but I don't think I've read a wide variety of it yet. It is quite a psychological read, not quite like the hard sci-fi books that I've read before but I was thoroughly anthrol until the end

Just finished the audiobook of this, not having read it before. The voice acting was really good and I think added a lot to the story, but I think it will be worth re reading now as well. I believe the entire performance that I heard (on audible) was by one guy, but he does all the characters really well as well as the narrator who is "no one". Men, women, machines... all this guy? And almost all of them sound entirely different from each other. It's really quite remarkable.

The popularity today of Liminal Spaces or the Back Rooms reminds me of reading this. As for thoughts on the ending so kinda SPOILER comment: What if Chip did actually regress into the past and it was not just some kind of illusion? He then influenced reality in some way to save Runciter's life so he could save him, at least in spirit, in his Half Life. So..... kind of also a Time Paradox which almost make the confusion worse.
@WordsinTime

That’s a cool theory! My interpretation was Ubik was a form of God, Jory was a form of entropy, and that the half-life and real world could interact but it was unclear whether it was Chip or Runciter that was in half-life.

UBIK also makes me think of the movie Synecdoche, New York. This movie similarly has a slow start with a conventional story feel in the first 40 minutes, but after starting a massive stage play project, it's get extremely weird and layered. Lot's of themes about life and death or maybe identity. A search for meaning in an art project out of control.

@WordsinTime It was brutally bitter-sweet. I thought Caden achieved a kind of success and defeat at the same time ( His insane play and life story finished, in a brutally literal way ). Or the woman who replaced him as director forced the play to complete? Otherwise, lots and lots symbolic characters moving about a shifting setting. Almost like a Russian Doll world as a Play within a Play.

Tbh *"Valis"* is probably one of his greatest accomplishments. It's so weird how he'd establish these worlds and you'd feel them almost as soon as you were on to the 5th page. Like you're already familiar with them🤣
