I'd use that model in the houses we remodel or build from the ground up. Our jobs scale between 3000 to 26,000 square feet and they hand-off seamlessly! I like the recessed mount and bet I could use that in 5/8 drywall. Nice unit. #ubntforlife #ubntcloudkey Chris, you have a great channel! From here in Fort Worth, Texas - keep it up.

I was researching the differences between the pro and the nano just before you posted this video, ironically.. you would have to use the pro in an outdoor setting since the nano is indoor only.. but I feel like the nano would be more appropriate in a new install just for the benefit of future proofing the wireless network as much as possible without spending twice as much for the HD..however, I do like the secondary port on the pro and the HD that the nano is lacking..

I found a perfect use case for these. We have a small conference space that is somewhat open to the public. It can see upwards of 100-200 people but is a bit more spread out then all in one room. The HDs would have been overkill, for the space but going with the nanoHDs allows us to have better 5ghz coverage in all areas while still being able to handle a large number of people spread out.

Biggest difference from the UAP-AC-Pro and the UAP-NanoHD is MU-MIMO. I found in a crouded 2.4GHz environment (Apartment building in a dense city) the AUP-AC-Pro can only get about 11 or 12Mb/second of download, while the MU-MIMO Consumer Router I was testing was able to easily do 100Mb in the same distance and power levels. I hope you can attempt to recreate this test in your more comprehensive test. It would be great to see 4+ clients at a time all hammering the AP at some range and see how the nanoHD handles the situation differently compared to the UAP-AC-Pro.

I just bought the nanoHD for my home last month. Chose this over the AC Pro just because the form factor was smaller and it would be less noticeable on the ceiling. Performance has been great. Getting around 100-300 mbps depending on interference. Range is amazing as well; only needed one to cover both floors of my 2000 sq ft townhouse.

Chris: Just a note when talking about Wi-Fi speeds: marketed speeds on the packaging (like 1300 Mbps for the AC-PRO and 1733 Mbps for the two HD's) are always full duplex. However, since Wi-Fi can only do half-duplex (each Wi-Fi unit takes turn transmitting), you only get half the marketed speeds on the package st best. So it doesn't matter that the nanoHD only has one Gigabit port, because the theoretical max speed is only half of 1733 anyway. This is just one example of this practice however. Companies also have have a habit of adding the 2.4G and 5G speeds together when marketing a router or AP's max speed. Now this is more acceptable, since the AP can use both bands at the same time, just not when communicating with the same unit. But anyway the point is that the gigabit port is gonna be more than enough for the nanoHD.

It is not full duplex speed. It is just the aggregate of the bands. There can be that many bits in the air, there is just so much more to a WiFi packet than an Ethernet packet, plus encryption, plus interference, plus time share. They don't just double the number.

The benefits of the nanoHD is they have changed SoCs and are getting more throughput for lower amounts of users. Most tests shows a single machine doing iperf tests with each AP as faster by a decent amount with the nano compared to the pro. We are not talking about moving beyond a max but rather being able to more reliably use that available bandwidth.

As for where i would use the nanoHD, my own workplace, which is a school, happens to be a perfect fit. The thing about this school is that the walls are thick solid concrete, even between classrooms. This means that signals will propagate poorly through walls. This, however, means that it's a perfect fit for a "One AP per room"-policy. We require good signal in every room, which are relatively small classrooms, and support for at least 60 devices per room (around 30 pupils, each having a smartphone and a computer/Chromebook is the worst case scenario), and since the range/penetration advantages of 2.4G is gonna be poor at any rate because of the walls, focusing on superb 5G performance makes more sense. And that's a niche the nanoHD fits nicely at a cheaper price than the HD. Of course it requires proper signal tuning, and you might need to turn off the 2.4G radios on some AP's to minimize interference. For larger congregation areas with wider space, I'd probably go with the HD.

I advocate only ever buying the AC Lite (make sure to get the newer ones with Gig connection and proper POE). I bought one LR and realized, what good is it that it can reach farther if the phone/end points can't reach back that far. Go for the cheaper "Lite" and put more of them in. I did buy one HD for our Council Chambers room. I don't really understand why another model when they already have too many imho. I am not slandering Ubiquiti, I absolutely LOVE the AP Lite and now have them scattered all over my work campus buildings and am using a Linux based server for the Unifi controller (all works wonderful). As for a home user, I have an AC Lite also and put in the middle of my house covers everything. Unless you throw HUGE parties where you have a bunch of people over cruising internet, I can't see buying anything other than the Lite for home. What I would really like to see are some better outdoor models. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but love for you Ubiquiti.

You can select it as Optional (APs will use PMF for all capable stations, while allowing non-PMF capable stations to join the WLAN) or Required (APs will use PMF for all stations. Stations without PMF capability will not be able to join the WLAN). As per your comment, this requires Gen3 APs only. Cheers!

Hello, thank you for the video is very helpfully. I have a question for you. I bought 2 NanoHD and I have a store than I have a lot of customers using wifi connection every day, when you mentioned 200+ users, its mean the capacity is only for 200 user at same time? A soon a customer is disconnected from the wifi another user can take the IP ? Thank you.
@futurecactus
@futurecactus 3 жыл бұрын
That limit is nothing to do with IP addressing, your router should be handling that and you can set it up with different address classes that will give you plenty of addresses, that said, how many people do you get in your store at once? I think you'll run into other problems before you reach 400 concurrent users unless you have very high end equipment and multiple high speed internet connections.

I am a total newbie trying to set up my home network with Ubiquiti products. Can anyone tell me if I can take advantage of the 4x4 MU MIMO of nanoHD or the 3x3 MIMO of PRO in a home environment? What if I get a 160 MHz wifi adapter for my desktop? Thanks.

thanks for some very awesome videos!!!... I wanted to know how well it handles broadcast traffic? I have over 25 Smart Lifx lights throughout my house, and a few Smart plugs which unfortunately only use the 2.4G and I know that can cause a lot of broadcast traffic. I wanted to know how well would the: NanoHD or Unifi AP HD do with this situation? I also wanted to know, how well it does with seamless roaming? plan on having 2 or 3 around the home. (Multi-level very large house). I am new to Ubiquiti, coming from Netgear. I have an okay understanding of networks and before now i mostly tried to wired anything i could. but most of the smart home product dont have wired options. thanks for any tips
@CrosstalkSolutions
@CrosstalkSolutions 5 жыл бұрын
Should handle broadcast traffic OK as long as you haven't blocked it in the UniFi Wireless settings --> Advanced section. Seamless roaming is something that has never worked that well IMO. A better option is simply well placed AP's that don't interfere with each other or other 2.4GHz or 5GHz radio signals.

Dual gigabit not really a concern given that the 1.733 gbps is theoretical and most likely never going to happen in actual deployments. If you restrict the wireless side to gigabit matching the single wire, and assume an average 7-10mbps per client, you can handle 100+ clients per AP....again in theory and not taking into account airtime utilization, noise, etc.

Hi Chris, I always enjoy your videos, and offer a suggestion for a future one, if you can find the time; I have a few sites with gen 1 cloud key, or raspberry Pi running Unifi Controller on each one. These are behind Meraki firewalls but with Unifi switches and AP's on the network. I have been frustrated with CK1's going off-line and the difficulty of getting them restarted when they are 100's of km distant. With the release of the GEN2 Cloudkey, I would like to roll all the separate sites into a single GEN2 Cloudkey in my office. I believe this can be done (each site has a solid fiber connection). but am unsure how to achieve the consolidation, and what the downside, (if any) may be. Cheers,

There is a large misunderstanding here, the nanoHD and the HD are MU-MIMO (AC wave 2) when the AC-Pro is MIMO only (AC wave 1) The effects can be visible especially now with the raise of gigabit internet almost everywhere In the AC Pro, if you have a laptop, or even a little iPad/tablet doing a large download, you’ll see in fact this equipment, even been a 2*2 using ALL the bandwidth of the AC Pro and starving the others equipments, you can see that especially if you have a smart TV or a Netflix box running a 4K stream and you start an iPad upgrade for example, When on the nanoHD and the Hd, as this is MU-MIMO, the iPad as a 2*2, will use half of the wireless ressource, and the Access point can still provide for example a 2*2 to the Netflix box with dedicated bandwidth, or 2 times 1*1 allowing to get then 3 equipments sharing the bandwidth without effect with each other so, basically, there is a generation difference between those AP which can be important even in a single and simple home environment I got a lot of customers,so happy with the nano now in replacement of the AC Pro as this is night and day with you have multiple users using bandwidth and latency sensitive applications For reference, the AC product line dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_AC_APs_DS.pdf And HD product line dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_nanoHD_AP_DS.pdf Please read carefully the difference of MU-MIMO and MIMO are they offer widely different perspective for networks scalability and usable

The controller allocates the SSID etc. You give the Site an SSID within the controller then it uploads that info to any connected Unifi device. So you need to add a physical UNifi cloud key or a cloud VPS controller to your setup. Make sure you get a v2 model as the v1 ones were not reliable

I'm wanting to dabble a bit more into Prosumer equipment & wanted to learn while using them in my residential setup. A question I have & haven't found a really clear answer to yet is, do these APs have a mesh mode setup like some other consumer WiFi router/APs are? Or am I stuck w/ using multiple SSIDs in the event I wanted to use three to five of these in a home to ensure that I have complete coverage w/ no blind spots? All of this is hypothetical of course.

Jerad Cranke in the UniFi controller you set up one network and all the APs will reflect that network. The AP roaming will be client side. I have two APs in my home and it’s all the same network. You have to play with radio power on the UniFi controller to get the client roaming dialed in though. Easy setup. Also, you will see people saying UniFi USG only capable of 200 Mbps or so. That is false. I am currently speed testing at 480+ Mbps over WiFi. I pay for 400 from my ISP.

@@Andy_i Awesome, I was hoping that this was the case since I've really "fallen in love" w/ the capabilities of Ubiquiti since I'm currently used to Consumer gear still. I absolutely hate how Netgear's Consumer WiFi routers & WiFi extenders create totally new networks. For example, my parents have a Netgear R6200 for their main router & a Netgear EX6200 extender. It extends the range for sure, but creates two completely separate WiFi networks on top of the pre-existing two from the main router. 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz from the router w/ 2.4GhzExt & 5GhzExt from the extender for short. WiFi devices are totally segregated from each other as well which adds another layer of frustration.
@Andy_i
@Andy_i 5 жыл бұрын
Jerad Cranke I feel your pain. We got tired of buying $400 prosumer routers every two years so we spent a little more on ubiquiti. We got a USG, switch 8 60w, cloud key gen1, and two nano HD’s. 1300 square foot house, 60+ devices. Works flawlessly. Night and day better than some of the best prosumer routers. Also, the level of control is unmatched. You will not have to worry about speed capability of the USG or the nano HD’s as we pay for 400mbps and speed test 480+ mbps over WiFi. And that’s with all the devices connected to the network. All the WAPs will be under the same network so you only have one SSID. You won’t have separate SSIDs for 2.4 or 5 either so that is nice. The WAP roaming is client side, so just play with the radio strength of the WAPS to get it right

I realize they have the inwall products, but even those require you to cut in a new low voltage single gang if you existing wall plate has more than one port, such as coax, HDMI or rj11.

I just bought one of these and put it on the 2nd floor ceiling, in the center of my house. It is sitting above a walkway in a very open space. Cathedral ceilings on both sides. My coverage is terrible with this AP. For example, at about 10' away on 5G, I can get 300Mbps down. If I move straight back another 5', it'll drop to 170Mbps. I'll still have a clear line of sight too but yet the speeds drop significantly. 2.4 is also abysmal. For whatever reason, I have better 5G coverage than I do 2.4. I have an Asus GT-AC5300 that is in my office, which is located on the left side of the house, and I can pretty much get excellent coverage/speed with it throughout and in the basement. Because of hard it would be add another ethernet drop, I'd like a "One AP" solution. If I got a AC-Pro, do you think i'd be in a better boat?

You are forgetting that wifi is not full-duplex, ethernet is. So the maximum speed of gigabit ethernet at least for both directions is actually 2 gigabit. So in this regard of traffic 2 gigabit is plenty for handling 1.7 gigabit of mixed traffic. There is also the factor like you said of other wireless users as well as the separate 2.4GHz band that is another 300 mbps. Regardless we are hitting a point where gigabit ethernet wont be good enough shortly.
