Sorry I don't know much about Ruckus AP's other than they appear to be very expensive, I can't comment on commercial /industrial applications but from my perspective I can't imagine why any home user would spend more than the cost of a Ubiquiti unless they have specific /unusual requirements. My AP AC Pro has been absolutely flawless in performance and reliability, so if you want an 11ac WAP why spend any more? AM

Also another question is since this is just an access point and not a router: If the current router can accommodate up to 10 wifi devices, will this access point be limited to 10 wifi devices as well? If not, to how many?

Thanks! I have found its hard to make predictions on range of WAP's becuase so much depends on positioning and construction of the building and any obstacles. This AP has similar range to the other 11ac AP's I have tested in my home. The 5Ghz coverage is limited but the 2.4Ghz will cover my entire house - if you are lucky enough to be able to centrally locate the AP I think one could cover a normal house adequately. Mine is not located centrally as my office is on the side of the house so I use a second AP to provide higher speeds at the opposite end of the house even though it is still possible to connect to the Ubiquiti. Ultimately in the UK (and other countries) broadcast power is limited by legislation (I think its 20dB), which probably explains why decent AP's of similar spec seem to perform very much the same from a range point of view. GL!

This device is not limited to 10 devices and easily copes with a lot more than that, most routers are also not limited to 10 clients. In your case you would need to check whether its your existing router wireless limitation or some other factor in your router. Some types of limitation could affect your whole network e.g. DHCP - this would be unusual / odd though. You need to have a look at your manual to be sure, or give it a try! AM

Regarding my existing modem/router combo, it is unfortunate that it has a set limit of 10 clients and when they gave it to me it did not come with a manual. Yes there methods to keep you blinded is somewhat annoying. I currently have more than 20 home automation devices that randomly needs to be reconfigured due to the limitations. The most logical option is to get a separate single fiber optic modem (converter), a separate router, and this AP to fulfill my needs. Sadly though, my ISP is adamant to relinquish any foresight as to what 3rd party options that can be optimal with my internet service. Golden handcuffs, ugh. They did assure me that if I was to buy this AP or any AP for that matter and attach it to the existing modem/router combo, my needs will be all checked out. I am highly suspicious of bottlenecking with that suggestion hehe... I do hope though my future purchase of a TRENDnet 4-port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA, TRENDnet Media Converter TFC-1000MGB and this AP will do the trick. If not, I'll have to go through a gruesome period of trial and error.

I hope it all works out for you, I can't help noticing the TRENDnet router you linked only has 100 Mbps network so it wouldnt be a natural choice for "normal" home LAN, A router with Gb network would make devices on your LAN go much faster (theoretically 10x) and they are not expensive unless you have no choice or a specific reason for choosing it Don't worry about affiliate link or whatever, I just do this for fun, I'll settle for a thunbs up! Hi NBSTL68, yes still performing very well and with no issues, the passthrough port serves as a bridged interface between main / secondary Ethernet port - many of the Ubiquiti device passthrough ports are data only and not PoE passthrough, check your device as there are a couple of exceptions that will also pass power. Hi Matthew, the WAP operates independently, you don't need to run the software or have a PC running at all unless you want to access the WAP's WebUI. So once you have set up your WAP the Unifi software is not required unless you want to log back in to change your configuration. AM

Hi Jack, not an area I am very knowledgeable - the only thing I know is that the power is regulated so that most wifi access points have very similar power (and range) capability in my experience.(w.wol.ph/2015/08/28/maximum-wifi-transmission-power-country/). My guess is that wifi is probably lower radiation than other home devices as they are low voltage and limited range devices but I am not expert enough to give you a proper answer. AM

This wap is ment to be used in a open area with clear lign of sight and multipple waps to get best coverage of a large area so its not ment for long range wifi. 5gz has verry low penetration of doors and such so it needs to be Los to work best

Hi km88ful, the later stages of this video do show the unit in operation, I haven't had any of the issues you describe. My unit typically has a minimum of 8 clients and is frequently streaming two HD video feeds from my security cameras. I haven't measured the thoughput but have not encountered any issues and the range is comparable to my other WAP's. I have certainly never had a crash, sorry you are encountering problems - do you have a faulty unit? AM

Hi Peter, you will need to run CAT 6 cable to the WAP from your network. The maximum theoretical cable length with the POE injector is 100m which should be plenty for most people. There are alternatives such as using homeplug (you can get these adapters with PoE injector built in) which would work, to be honest though I am not a huge fan of HomePlug myself - although is does work it is no substitute for a CAT6 cable. Are you sure you need the WAP to be in your room? Remember the range on this device is pretty decent so you could probably locate somewhere convenient and still get a strong connection with wireless devices within a reasonable distance. AM

FYI if you have 2 or more (and you don't need the PRO model, the LITE or the LR will work just as well) associated with the same controller they will automatically create a wireless bridge though you speeds will be cut in half.

Have a look at 'High density scenarios' in this datasheet, it compares the AC PRO with the HD version. The maximum theoretical number of clients is 125 but less than 70 is recommended. @@AmoebaManI found a unify document that discussed issues that could limit speed, one of which was cables. I had connected my AC-PRO with brand new cat5e cables, except the cable from the poe injector to the unit. This was a very old 5e cable that came with a router i used about 15 years ago: I used this because the length was perfect for my needs. I replaced it with a brand new, but shorter, cable and the speed rose to 295 Mbps a metre from the AP. The phone that I was using has an LTE cat 6, which has a max download speed of 301. So, I am now assuming that I have reached the max capability of the phone. My wife owns a phone with LTE cat 12 capability (max download of 603), so I'll try her phone next.

I only have a small home network and have multiple WAP's so typically max 10 clients. AM

I used AP LR, and got connected up to 40 clients with smooth connectivity.

Good to hear, as an enterprise device I wouldn't have expected anything less but its good to have it confirmed by someone. As a home user its hard to imagine I will ever test the limits of the hardware tbh, arguably its over the top for most home users needs :) AM

Yes, you are right, the light can be turned off in the software, I've kind of got used to it. Wall mount seems to work well for me and ceiling mount would be awkward for me to cable - if you have ceiling tiles and roof space it would good though you are right. AM

Like it was pointed in the video, this is _only_ an AP, it does no routing whatsoever, you still need to connect it to a router.

Hi Molb, I attached the supplied bracket to the wall using the screws and rawl plugs provided and then the unit just clips onto the bracket and it is held in position. AM

Maybe hinting that the antenna broadcast pattern is designed for ceiling mount (think a donuts shape) where it goes mostly out and a bit down. On the wall that means your going a bit away from the wall, a bit behind the wall but mostly up/down and along the wall with signal power.

Sure, you are absolutely righ, the "optimal" mounting for this WAP is definitely ceiling mounted as the coverage is considered "doughnut shaped" < UK doughnut spelling ftw :) > When I tested my device I got the same coverage (and speed) in my house regardless of orientation but you are right to point out that for some people it might make a difference. I used it for quite a lot of time sat on a desk.
