This is another heavy episode containing discussion of abuse. A few weeks ago, I was distraught, devastated, and overwhelmingly saddened by the accounts of misconduct in the game industry. Now I am angry.
I am very angry, and very disgusted, and I've saved a lot of pent up rage for Ubisoft, a company that went above and beyond in its protection of predatory men and systemic exploitation.
The publisher used this past week to BURY the story under a mountain of previews, trailers, and announcements, which the press dutifully lapped up. As the publisher has successfully drowned out the abuse allegations with sheer noise, it's time we started shouting back.
Ubisoft spent years protecting mental and physical abusers, and CEO Yves Guillemot should never be allowed to forget that.

As a HR guy, I can categorically say that it's not true in every company; we are just as often referees who enforce the rules against managers as well as employees. I've had no end of managers complain at me why they can't "just fire" someone they've decided they don't like, and I've stopped them trying. Ubisoft's HR sounds like a shit show though, protecting piece of shit managers. Also, to reiterate the comments below, YES, JOIN A GODDAMN UNION. Pay your dues, get someone who will fight tooth and nail for your employment rights. Fight for your own employment rights too.

@@nozero1 Individual employees in the HR department are not the same as the purpose of the department itself. HR exists to protect the company just as much as the legal department does - that includes from unlawful firings and other illegal abuses within the company. The goal is to protect the company in case of lawsuit. Different companies have different workplace cultures and tolerances towards workplace abuses. The HR departments of those companies will reflect those workplace cultures in how they react to the cases brought before them. But never forget that if it's the employee vs the company? HR will always protect the company (AKA the employer) over the employee, no matter what individual HR employees want to do. Remember, managers are employees too. Disputes between employees will be handled in the company's best interests and in accordance with the workplace culture of the corporation.

My mother is a top level HR consultant in my country, one of the highest paid in the whole country. And I can confirm with 100% certainty that what you say is accurate. HR exists to protect employers, not employees. My mother has considered quitting many times because of this. But I told her not to, because at least with her there is someone in there who genuinely cares about people. She is a good person. So even though it takes a big toll on her to do that kind of work, it is better than some apathetic asshole being in her position instead.

The sad thing about the whole 'there are good people at Ubisoft too!' angle is that good people aren't celebrated or properly rewarded ANYWAY. They may receive the odd (small) performance bonus, or a free copy of the game, but they're still overworked and underpaid. Those good people who DESERVE to be praised for their amazing hard work (looking at you, Assassin's Creed historical researchers and level designers) are overshadowed by VP bonuses and shitty managers taking credit for their work.

Had to go anonymous for this one. Let me just say that as someone who works in the industry, it is immensely difficult to constantly bite my tongue about these things. I want to yell it from the goddamn rooftops every single day since I became professionally involved with this industry. But I can guarantee you: They will find out - and if they do, you're gonna be in a lot of trouble. My specific company (one that constantly pops up on this channel btw) even asks their employees to give them any and all links to their social media accounts. It's mandatory. KZfaq, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, everything. Now while you don't have to open the profiles for everyone to read, it still is quite the message. And having professional contacts on any of these websites only adds to the paranoia and basically renders the "My profile is private" argument useless anyway. If I told you what upper management did to me as retaliation against voicing my opinions, it would make your skin crawl.

Just a few things I want to post for anyone reading the comments that this video kind of glossed over. 1) Resignations are NEVER a sign of accountability and responsibility. In this context, they are UNIVERSALLY a quitter going "I don't want to clean up this mess, have fun." and hiding behind the excuse that they resigned in an attempt to dodge all further punishment. If anything was going to change they'd have been ARRESTED and replaced THAT way. Thus, a resignation is the polar opposite of a sign of change. It's a sign of a cover-up. It's a of sign stagnation and upholding the status quo. Whenever there's resignations over this kind of thing, you should OCTUPLE your scrutiny instead of relaxing it, because it PROVES, beyond a shadow of doubt, that things are only going to get WORSE. 2) Regarding people making the "but what about the people who worked hard on this game" argument: *They have already been PAID, and as proven by Randy Bitchford, even the studios that offer bonuses and royalties to compensate for low wages will try to cheat their way out of paying up what's owed.* Not buying a game on principle will NOT hurt them. And no, they won't get fired over poor sales, they would have been fired even if it was a rousing success; game studios mass lay off and rehire all the time even when having record years, as a cost saving measure to ensure more money flows to the top. Case in point, Activision's 800 lost jobs during a record-breaking year. Enough said. So at the end of the say... who's the "simp." here? 1)The ones actually thinking these things through rationally and deciding to use these events to narrow the selection of games we want, allowing us both the satisfaction of not paying for the rapey activities of rapists AND saving us money, thus being the perfect win/win scenario as a customer? 2) The simpletons who are too simpleminded to see beyond their desire to play a game and make up all kinds of excuses like the aforementioned thing about thinking of the people who worked hard on the game, which, as stated before, falls apart under even the tiniest bit of scrutiny? Enough said.

I don't really think it's "don't politics my game" as much as "don't politics me with a bad game" - you get a decent chunk of "political games" that are just, well, not good. And so people are quick to shoot when they see anything that hints at a game being "political" because to them "political" = "We put more effort into spewing SJW talking points instead of doing that + making a good a game." Which is only made WORSE by an industry that will outright attack you for daring to not like The Latest Product, often times jumping to a "You don't just like it because _girls_ when that's not true at all. I don't mind it if you want to put in good messages about rising up against fascists but entertain me along the way. And you CAN do it. You can sprinkle in even critique or play of gaming conventions in video games when done well. Spec Ops: The Line did an adequate job, and part of the impact of Undertale was how it played around with typical RPG tropes and such. _Razzle Joestar_

It's that simple, they ARE a marketing arm at this point. From IGN to the smaller ones, they are hanging on the corporate nipples suckling for every cent of banner ads and autoplaying videos. There's a reason i've stopped trusting ANY and all game reviews outside of truly independent solo youtube reviewers who are based on Patreon. Either directly through a customer base, which would limit the scope of his audience to those who could afford, or ads which would create conflict. I think he's sitting good right now. I agree, it WOULD be nice if we could just talk about games, but the game industry won't give us a break from their fucking bullshit! I'm so fucking sick of gamers who want videogames to be taken seriously as an art form, but also accept none of the responsibility that entails. For videogames to be treated like movies or books but also have no "politics" that they don't agree with and to be able to say "it's just a game, we don't care, we just want to have fun" whenever things get heavy. It's literally like a child saying "I want to be in charge and make the decisions in this house!" without having a job or contributing to the bills or housework in any way. You don't get to be taken seriously until you earn it, you have to grow the fuck up first. Once gamers stop acting like petulant children and the industry starts holding people accountable, THEN videogames will be taken seriously.

My cousin had HR turn on him in a company of like 20 people because he wanted to report one of the bosses for being transphobic against one of their external business partners (who btw without the entire company would probably be screwed). He didn't want her fired or anything, just someone needed to address how they represented themselves to business partners. No, THIS is your lawyer. We are here to protect YOU" So much of HR in huge companies has simply turned into a disgusting act of pretending to care while filing allegations of sexual assault or harassment away into a file cabinet that's destined to collect dust if it weren't for it's constant additions.
