Ubisoft's stock drops off a cliff this week, right after the Assassins' Creed Shadows trailer featuring a black samurai drops. Coincidence? Maybe. But Ubisoft's future looks pretty grim right now.

He was purchased, used as a pet and a oddity then when Nobunaga perished he was sold back to his old masters to disappear from history, He really is nothing worth more then an NPC standing by Nobunaga and nothing else. to conspicuous to do anything away and would never be allowed to be away from Nobunaga or to wander without him.

@@TheDumontShow I feel the backlash wouldn't be as visceral had they not just gone on a campaign against the Shogun series claiming that historical accuracy is evidently racist because how dare they not incorporate the one historically known black man in Japan into the series despite him neither being in the book or any record of him existing after 1582. Secondly, the blatant attempts to not only insist on Yasuke holding a class and title there is no record of him holding coupled with the attempted vandalism of the wikipedia page to re-frame his position means one will find it hard to separate the intent of the developer from the entire ordeal. The portrayal of the female character (shinobi vs kunoichi) is a whole other discussion.

Anyone who knows anything about Japanese culture and history can tell you right away that Yasuke was not a samurai for one extremely simple reason: He has no surname. See people think that "samurai" is just any Japanese warrior, but they were nobility. And only nobles had surnames, because it was the name of their clan. There's even precedent for commoners and foreigners being made samurai. Hideyoshi Toyotomi was such a nobody that we don't even know what his name originally was, but he was made a samurai under Nobunaga Oda. Later Ieyasu Tokugawa granted samurai status to William Adams, giving him the name Miura Anjin. With samurai status came wealth, land, and power, these men made a distinct mark on history and are well documented. We know almost nothing about Yasuke, he has no surname, he had no land, no wealth, no clan, no record of anything he did or any role he played in historical events, not even anything trivial. Yasuke was effectively Nobunaga's pet, given a stipend of money and allowed to wander around town freely, but still very much a servant, not even a warrior. He is a historical footnote and the only reason we even know he existed is because Nobunaga had a serious fascination with foreign things, and found Yasuke interesting.
@applesoda6308
@applesoda6308 25 күн бұрын
I'm Japanese. Yasuke was not samurai because only upper rank bushi was samurai before Edo period. Also Yasuke having no surname is that it is doubtful if Yasuke was even a bushi, because bushi had to have a surname in the class system. Greedy media making Yasuke into a samurai is going too far. Mixing history and fiction/sales pitch is propaganda.

@@mansamusa8410 He was real, but never a samurai. There is not a single historical source mentioning him having that title. Instead, they mention him being a "kosho", which is some form of squire, holding the swords for a samurai (in this case for the daimyo, Nobunaga). This is a servant position, not a warrior. From the sources, he only ever participated in a single battle, and that was after Nobunaga had died, so Yasuke had to fight the castle invaders in order to survive. A battle he lost. From the historical sources, he surrendered as soon as he was given the chance to do so, which explains why he was spared and exiled. He never once led samurais in battle as some form of general, like the trailer imply. If he had been a real samurai, he would have been executed by Mitsuhide, like all the other samurais loyal to Nobunaga. Also to note is that when someone is made samurai, they are given a surname by their lord. Prime example of that would be the western samurai William Adams, who was given the surname Miura when he was made samurai. However, there is not a single historical source mentioning Yasuke having such a surname.

HISTORIC FACTS: 1) Yasuke by official recording was a page or koshō/小姓 /page in Japanese. What would be similar to a squire, page in medieval times? Not near a samurai, or even a medieval knight. 2) He also had a short sword (wakizashi) given since he was not of the noble class, or high standing and for Yosuke owning a katana would be a crime without permission. (Katana was not a fast-made sword even today and was for the elite only. Taking a year or years to be made.) Besides low-quality mass productions known as kazuuchimono like WWII katana swords. 3) Oda Nobunaga already used sword hunt /刀狩/ katanagari ordering the seizure of swords and a variety of other weapons from civilians/farmers in the Sengoku period in 1576 because of problems with an Ikkō-ikki group causing problems and certainly enforcing that law on his allies. In 1588 Toyotomi Hideyoshi similarly enforced the same law for a second time. 4) An interesting fact is that Feudal Japan was stratified by using religions such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shinto keeping the society stable, and stratified. Lasting nearly a millennium with changes in 1543(The first European arrival) isolation till 1853 (The arrival of Matthew Perry and opening.) and the drastic changes of 1868 (Meiji era) and then 1945 (After WWII) in culture, society, etc. 5)Daimyo in the war between themselves in the Sengoku period set rules including those loyal to Oda on the swords, and tanegashima (matchlocks) gun, weapons with control, and rules. The castles even had weapon storages, and in typical bureaucracy, they were counted and controlled, even secured behind the lock and key in the castle weapon storages. Since daimyo lands were at risk of invasion from other enemy daimyos, they did allow certain weapon groups, for self-defence, for the military, and outside it with permission besides other daily things that could serve as weapons and also, in response to avoid rebellions from commoners, non-nobility of their lands. It would be double pressure if the daimyo army rebelled when another enemy attacked. Meaning, that the local populace got less dangerous weapons, as they controlled more deadly ones. 6)Also, there were already permits, laws, what kind of weapon one could wear by status, what colour, material, decorations, etc. Noting their status in society thanks to the influence of China, and to easily regulate society. Just like armour by their type and appearance noting who they were in the army. 7) Yasuke would not wear a Ō-yoro/大鎧/great armour as seen in the video as it was meant for high-standing humans instead of a similar, plainer Dō-maru/胴丸)/body wrap which was for low-class samurai and servants as he was of bushi/ 武士/ warrior class with no given surname. The difference was fewer components, (less flashy) with less weight and without the decorative markings, or colour of the higher-ranking military ranks. 8) The strange part of the video is that armour was worn only in wars, not every day as it would be like wearing a special OPS uniform for daily life and chores. It would draw attention even before he would receive the secret note. 9) Yasuke was certainly of a slave background under the Portuguese Empire as the slave trade started well before the 1500s with their outposts in India where he was picked by Jesuits as written by Jesuit Luís Fróis. Slavery did not exist in Japan and was given to Oda by them, implying that he was subservient to the Jesuits. 10) The records tell that he was in Japan for three years staying with Jesuits and Oda (15 months in service) with no further recording and had less experience in war. And it would be a stretch, even for modern humans staying in Japan with norms, or getting masterful in kenjutsu sword fighting taught at a young age. Well, he could use other weapons besides katana. 11) He was for certain a curiosity in a monoculture society and Oda Nobunaga. Just like Pochahontas to English, the first Incas, Aztecs to Spanish, Native Americans to French, etc. Most Africans in monoculture societies from historical records in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese royal courts from slavery would get employed because of their appearance as a curiosity for guests of their employees, or end up doing tricks. Sadly it was quite common. 12) He was returned to the Jesuits after the death of Oda after a stint in prison after a capture. (Not committing a seppuku as common for samurai.) Maybe he was spared that, or he was not a samurai. 13)There is information by Jesuit Luís Fróis - Historia de Japam Volume 1 through 4 that he by assumption would receive the title of tono also as dono/殿 との comparable to "lord" or "master". However, it does not imply noble status, or even samurai class as it was a show of respect title like the English milord, German Wohlgeboren, Spanish-don, etc. It is below the title of -sama in honorifics in Japan's honorific titles. 14) He had a house, not land as mentioned in records (since he was not part of the nobility, or even local) and a stipend that was a fixed regular sum paid as a salary or as expenses to a clergyman, teacher, or public official as he worked as a page or servant. The house could be claimed back after his service, or given with land for him after service as it was common in that period.

I am Japanese and my wife is African, but she is no longer in this world. I wanted to share my opinion about the game. ubisoft mentioned the accuracy of the story in the Assassin's Creed series. But the problem is that the setting like structures, houses, nature, objects - everything is bizarre and not Japanese but Chinese And the protagonist, Naoe, doesn't look Japanese but has more the ethnicity of Vietnamese or Korean or Thai.she looks like liu kang swap gender And this is the problem I have than others. If the idea is to create a game in the correct environment and Japanese traditions settings And that has to be done properly, in my opinion. The problem with Yasuke, I think, is that we Japanese expected more of a representation of a famous shinobi or samurai to represent the land of the rising sun. And I think if we wanted an African protagonist, I would have liked it more if it had been set in a traditional Mozambican environment with an African protagonist. More importantly, this is the first time that Ubisoft has decided to use a main character as a historical figure rather than a secondary one. And I think that's what created the controversy that's going on right now.

But as you say, these events were well documented; their rank, annual salary and responsibilities to their lord were all documented and can be referenced to this day. We meanwhile have very little historical record of Yasuke's life. We don't know where he was born, what his real name was (Yasuke being a name given to him in Japan by Oda Nobunaga) and his fate after Nobunaga's death is unknown. The only rank associated with Yasuke that we have a record of is; koshō, which is closer to a Page or Attendant. This is not to say that Yasuke is not a historically interesting figure and certainly could be used to present an outsiders perspective into a very insular period of Japan's history, indeed some prior works have done just that, but we have very little evidence to suggest Nobunaga ever granted him Samurai rank.

Kneon, you're right that this is just a video game, however Ubisoft made this a historical issue by claiming that Yasuke (a historical person) was a samurai. Problem is there are no historical documents stating Yasuke was as samurai and no one so far has been able to point to a single historical source saying so. Right now it looks like the samurai Yasuke claim is something made up COMPLETELY out of thin air and being pushed largely by journalists (and now a French gaming corporation).

it's not a matter of whether there was or was not a black samurai, it's a matter of timing, industry awareness, and recognizing the temperament of their customers. these are important points around which successful companies maneuver and unsuccessful run into and sink. modern "executives" repeatedly fail at this fiduciary task, historically without facing any career-damaging repercussions. when companies fail to notice which executives are repeatedly making these bad decisions and fail to deal with them in a timely fashion, they are tacitly rewarding those decisions. more and more, customers are willing to show no such a reluctance to punish those executives and their companies for poor business acumen...

Ubisoft once prided themselves on keeping their Creed games 80-85% historically accurate, to the point where Notre Dame was rebuilt using their in game model. Even if it is historically accurate, they had to go out of their way to find the one Black Samurai in Japan history as opposed to one of the thousands of Japanese Samurai they could have used. And I would have the same stance if the set a game in Africa and gave us a white guy main character.

My husband is a huge Assassin's Creed fan (has played every single game) and is Japanese.. and he's really upset about Yasuke. He's not upset that he's in the game.. he's upset that he's THE main character. They are twisting history, making things up and calling it fact. That's why he's upset. There was definitely an African man, brought to Japan by Portuguese Jesuit priests and given to Nobunaga. But the fact that the trailer shows this man LEADING Nobunaga's forces is absolutely absurd. There is little to no evidence that he was even a samurai. There is a quote about him being given a short sword and small home by Nobunaga but there isn't a lot beyond that as far a commendations. The point is that people have been asking for an Assassin's Creed game taking place in Japan for a decade easily.. why did they HAVE to do this? What would have been wrong with a real Japanese samurai being the main character of this game?

What I just cannot understand is that they did not make an Assassin’s Creed game set in feudal Japan with a Japanese man being the main character. It would have been a guaranteed money maker. It’s a given. I just can’t see how these businesses consistently misjudge what their customers are going to do, which is not give them money. It’s the entire spectrum from games to movies to drinks. And I’m probably forgetting something else too.

The Metatron YT channel gave a mini-deep dive into Yas...wtv his name is...into their past that is documented, with most of the information coming from *HIS OWNER's* journal. Apparently he bought the guy and almost immediately freed him, not believing in slavery, and kept him as a serf who basically acted as his personal assistant. There was one story that cracked me up about how soon after being taken in the owner was still disbelieving of the color so he had him bath with other servants who were ordered to scrub him for hours on end to see if the coloring would come out, thinking it must have been some type of dye. Later he was given a *short sword* (slightly shorter than a Wakizashi I assume) and a small parcel of land to live on and farm. He was never taught how to fight, never mind trained as a samurai, but he was known to sit in the garden and talk for hours on end about his homeland in Africa with his _liege._ As for A.C. having him as a super warrior, idk, it doesn't bother me all that much *EXCEPT* alot, and I mean a *LOT* of people want to play a male version of the female *NINJA* character. Ubisoft has been changing historical figures for ages in Assassin's Creed, but I _think_ this feels wrong because of the motivation. They didn't do it because they thought he would be the most fun person to play with, they did it to virtue signal and *NOT* let a white guy play the hero. Or white *_adjacent_* in this case. Had they included this did as an NPC, even a very important one, while having the lead be a Japanese native regardless of sex, like they have in their other recent A.C. games no one would have said a fu##'n word, but they didn't. They really, really *HATE* white men and don't want them to have _"Heroic"_ roles in their games. They literally said as much on numerous occasions. This is where things get really f'd up. Even if their stock drops the major investment firms will still give them money. It's not their's anyway, it comes from your 401K, or the bus driver's down the road. They take the money they get from the elite and put it into Nvidia, AMD, Open AI or simply buy high yield treasuries with it while regular people who already have that shit 401K (which never should have been legal to begin with, at least not as a replacement to pensions) retirement plan and use that. If the company finally goes bust, well it's just less money for the new _"Serf"_ class the powers that be have created by buying all the land and investing regular people's money horribly poorly and driving inflation through the roof. These companies literally do not care, as the money is your's that they are losing, while the people at the top cash out whenever there is a top while your's has a sell at the bottom. Absolute mess. F Ubisoft and the firms that support them. This is why I emptied my 401K in 2014, ate the penalties and invested myself. You're better off watching a week's worth of investment channels on YT and using Robin Hood than putting money into these shams *UNLESS* your employer is 50%+ matching. Since most companies don't match at all anymore, why would anyone in their right mind let someone they don't know invest in this garbage for them? Literally hundreds of millions of people in the US and Europe are funding companies and banks they absolutely despise. Take their fricken money away and invest on your own. A 10 year treasury smashes 401K returns by about 4% right now, while good investing should kill it by 15%+. In any case, get your money out so these companies are finally *FORCED* to cater to their customers, as like I said, right now they are getting your money regardless.

Yasuke was brought to Japan by Portuguese Jesuits in 1581. Oda Nobunaga found him intriguing. He found foreign people and objects interesting. The Jesuit was used as a translator between the two. Yasuke was kept around for entertainment and was made a retainer (to the ire of his generals and samurai houses). Nobunaga gave him a sword, but Yasuke never really participated in battles directly. If anything, he was kept in the command camp during campaigns. One year later, in 1582, Yasuke was killed while fighting Akechi Mitsuhide's forces or was forced to commit seppuku when Nobunaga was betrayed and died in the Honno-ji incident. There's no real mention of him after the incident in Japanese texts or Jesuit documents. Ubisoft took massive liberty with his story. During that time period. There were approximately 100 Africans brought to Japan by the Jesuits and Portuguese Murchants.

@andrewbrooks2001
@andrewbrooks2001 25 күн бұрын
@Red-Check-Mark why are you so angry? The information I provided definitely was not false or "bullshit." The retainers that were with Nobunaga, at Honno-ji Temple, were Mori Ranmaru (蘭丸), Rikimaru (力丸), Bomaru (坊丸) and Yasuke (弥助). They didn't survive and burned down to ashes with Honno-ji Temple. Yasuke was either killed by Akechi Mitsuhide forces or he committed seppuku with his lord. There are some theories that because he was from Africa, the Japanese viewed him as a "beast" and not human. Because of this, he was either killed or sent to the nearest Jesuit missionary. That's up in the air. There's no documentation regarding this other that there were no survivors at Honno-ji Temple. Yasuke was a retainer of Nobunaga. Most likely, he died fighting at Honno-ji or committed seppuku. Nobunaga's Clan survived as a whole, but they never regained the strength they had under Nobunaga's leadership. That's it, that's the story. Why get angry over it? Actually, the anniversary is coming up regarding the fall of Nobunaga and Honno-ji Temple on June 21st.
