I've been playing WOW for a couple of weeks hoping to get a mission with a submarine. I'm not even sure if I'm any closer to getting one. Very frustrating. Then up pops this review like it was the answer to my frustrations. I bought UBoat immediately, just waiting for installation to finish. Thanks for the review.

I had withdrawal symptoms when the subs left WoWS. So I tried Uboat and LOVE IT! The quirks and frustrations are just part of the experience. Like an actual captain you have to watch your subordinates and not trust them blindly.

I was thinking the same thing, if your into military history speaking German is a huge asset. I collect WW1 items and Sthalhelms are the bulk of my collection, I`ve been called a Nazi for that. I don`t bother explaining WW1 and the Kaiser had nothing to do with the Nazis.

@@WatchMysh Unfortunately, you still cannot visit the base of La Palace witch I think is very stupid since it is a reminder of a very important part of the town recent history. There is in the center of La Rochelle a museum called "le bunker" where U-boats officer used to stay during the war. And of course, there is little bunkers all over the coast. And it make me remember that there was one in the garden of the house I grew in ,till the age of ten, in Angoulins/mer , a small town , 20 minute far from La Rochelle ! I was terrified of it and never went in, because of the "ghosts" :) By the way, this little town have cliffs ( "la pointe du chay") and a small Blockaus as we called it. The view of the ocean is great, and the sunsets I witnessed when I was a kid are greatly missed. I hope you will be able to come in La Rochelle when this damn virus will be just a bad memory, and that you will be nicely treated by the locals. Cheers.

@@dfdgfdgf0000 thanks for your little story :) Do they say why you can't visit the submarine pens? We absolutely want to visit La Rochelle, but without the bunkers it's only half as good as it could be. We're on the Loire with our boat at the moment. :) But it seems like we don't have enough time to make it all the way to the atlantic ocean. So we'll come back next year. Maybe they've re-opened the pens then to the public.

@@WatchMysh I don't have a clue, why we can't go freely to the base like when I was a kid. I guess It is maybe because of hazards like steel rods (I don't know if it is the correct term in English..). the only thing I can tell you is that in the time when the La Pallice port was in activity, it was known that the place was more polluted that the norm and this is why the houses was cheeper. I am from 86 and when I was a kid, La Pallice was a really ugly, grey, abandoned place... But since I returned to live in La Rochelle, 2 years ago, the place has totally changed, there a gentrification process happening, with a lot of "bo-bo", a term you might know since you come in France ^^, a "marché aux puces", new construction ( as in all La Rochelle...). I will try to know why we can't access the base. Anyway, they should a least propose a guided tour in my opinion. I hope you are having a good time, and I'm sorry for the quarantine... Take care :)

The laughing sawfish was the emblem on the sub in the movie Das Boot.... was it a real ly an actual unit emblem? I would have thought different boats would have their own personalized art like that. I wonder if this game will let you select a distinctive symbol for your boat?

Hi there. :) You actually have to calculate the solution by yourself if you set Silent Hunter to 100% realism. My recommendation is Silent Hunter 3 with the grey wolves supermod as I'm not much into SH5 modding. But there are some great conversions for it too as far as I know. Or do you mean you haven't played SH yet because you forgot how to calculate a solution? UBOAT just simulates other aspects than what you would expect from a classic sim. I'll do a "re-visited" video once the campaign mode has been released.

@@WatchMysh I have all the Silent Hunters; tried loading 5-but it almost set my computer on fire. Yes, it's because I can't remember the calculation for torpedo shots; that I haven't tried 3 or 4. I have the Grey Wolves Mod. KZfaq wasn't a thing the last time I checked, guess I could have a look to see if anyone has a quick breakdown. It's a simple formula, so hopefully there's a two minute explanation somewhere. Very satisfying getting a hit, especially when you've calculated 4 shots and, say, 3 of them hit. I also really hope U-Boat comes to console; as that would just seal the deal. My laptop's old, but I always have a recent console. It's just idiot proof, and as such; I'm sure they'll provide a good tutorial.

The game I played, Up Periscope I think [not the arcade one-though that was also great in it's own way]; was definitely one of the games I remember most as a kid. I've never played anything like it, and would like to again. It was SO hardcore, which is both super immersive-and a curse; purely from the standpoint of getting into the game in the first place. But once you're in, you're hooked. Alright, it's past my bedtime; but I'll have a quick look for a tutorial now.

Yes. I hope they add some automation to these tasks. And let you "lock" certain foods so you can give out special food types just when needed to boost morale. Like I said: certain actions lack meaningful impact to the game. But they'll open it up for modding, so I think we will get these features one way or another in the future. :)

Oh and: you don't really prepare the meals. You just have to move food to the kitchen from storage etc ... but even this gets tedious on the long run.

Yes. They implemented a new time compression system in one of the last updates. It works really well.

The game has been improved a lot. A LOT. There's another big update incoming shortly. The next one after that will be 1.0. Check the changelogs on Steam. I'm convinced Uboat will have a bright future.

The game's performance increased with recent patches. Still hard to tell, through, if it will run well on your system. I'd say 1080p on medium without AA might be playable. Try it out. If it doesn't work then just refund.

U-Boat ist gerade noch im Sale und für ich glaube 12,50€ braucht man nicht weiter nachdenken, wenn man mit Ubooten und Simulationen allgemein ein bissel was anfangen kann. Probably the best choice. But it's far from the silent hunter bug fest. They already did a better job than sh5 after release and some patches.

I can't. It's not a sim in a tradirional way. It focuses on the tactical and social layers.

I think it's because WW2 is less abstract. You get to see what you shoot at. No advanced sensors, just "you and the boat". Did you already check out the russian mega mod for CW (CW Epic Mod)?

Yes... Kinda. If a mine triggers it usually is very close or in direct contact with the Uboat. I don't know of any historical analysis on this topic but maybe there's a certain reason for it. ;)

Sorry, not a native speaker. Also try to talk for 12 minutes and not swallow a letter once. On the other hand my noise gate could have killed the "t". I don't know. But if that's the biggest problem with my videos, I'm fine. :)

Guess you should wait until release then. My personal take: the game will become the next "Silent Hunter 3". The devs managed to integrate tremendous improvements over the last year and the release version will be a really enjoyable SubSim. If you expect to get the same game with prettier looks as "back in the days" then you will be disappointed. UBOAT is a fresh take on the genre and also moddable from scratch. So over time everyone will be able to mod together the game they want. Also the technological foundation itself is 10 times better than what SH3/4 called "simulating".

Much better. You can now play until the war ends and trigger several different endings. There will be one more build until 1.0. So I guess we'll see a full release somewhere around Q3 2022 I guess? That's when I'll do a full revisit / new review. :)

@@asiftalpur3758 I tried some of the recent builds. It really is a day and night difference between this review and what we get now. Still there's a lot do in terms of balancing and stuff like sonar detection ranges etc... if they fix this even the hardcore sim crowd might fall in love with the game eventually.
