84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff can be purchased here - tiny.cc/84Chari...
In 1949, New York writer Helene Hanff wrote a letter to Messrs Marks and Co, a London bookseller specializing in rare and secondhand books, inquiring about several titles. From that one letter evolved nearly two decades of correspondence between the witty and acerbic Hanff and restrained bookseller Frank Doel. A record of cultural difference, literary love, and deep friendship first published as a memorial to Doel in 1970, their exchanges intermingle book requests and literary musing with notes about family and career and sympathies regarding post-war hardship. At this special reading on what would have been Hanff's 100th birthday, used book buyer Bradley Craft and Pam Cady, manager of general books, will share excerpts from the epistolary classic with us.

Oh my I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes. I have always loved this book and I loved the movie with Ann Bancroft. The audio version that I listened to a few years ago was wonderful and I have recommended this book to so many people. A person can't tell me that they love books without me passing on this information. You've brought back wonderful memories of all my past experiences with it. And even though I knew the ending, I still was affected by it. Thank you for presenting this! Job well done.

So touching. Especially how Helene's warm wit gradually broke down Frank's British formality.

it was 25 years ago yesterday, April 9th when she died. A very sad day it was. She left us that wonderful little book and the others she wrote. What a wonderful gift. I do hope that some day someone writes a terrific bio on that wonderful lady! thank you Miss Hanff for 84 Charing Cross Road and the other 4 you wrote.

This is the first play that I was ever cast in: I was a bookstore clerk, and my fellow bookstore clerk, Karole Spangler, was playing Helene Hanff. There is a small role in the play, "Tom", with no speaking lines: he is one of Frank Doel's bookstore clerks, in the play. Karole asked me at work if I would do it, and I did. That was 30 years ago. I've been in a dozen or more plays since then (just small community theater productions), so on top of my normal geek activities I have an acting career that I never even expected or planned for. 84 Charing Cross Road was the very first play I was in, and I am still, to this day, arrested by every word of the script, much of which I still have memorized, even though my part had no speaking lines. Thank you, theater people, for letting me be a part of your wonderful world. Our production was around 1990 at the Clifton Center, directed by the late and much lamented Londoner-turned-Louisvillian, Ms Kathi E. B. Ellis. For more than 35 years, Ms Ellis, through her theatrical direction, led us in Louisville to understand that good theater could happen even 1500 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon. She is sorely missed by so many here, she is the sort of person you'd do anything to have back. I will say of her as director that she told me what to do, I did it, and I didn't ruin the play. I was later cast by her in "Takin' Over the Asylum", 25 years later. I miss her so much.

It is charming to refer to New York as her "...home town."
