Getting away from the jam packed beach clubs is a step in the right direction. At least Ubud conveys a sense that you're in Indonesia. Keep going - the old, untouched Bali must be out there somewhere.

Tbh l am waiting for our host to finally show us some real interesting places. Sofar only heavily packed tourist spots. Can’t be bothered really. We have those in Thailand aswell and nice for a day or night, but otherwise l always try to avoid those areas.

@@bertvanderkooij2886 from the look of it a lot of tourists love this place, but I agree with you it could be anywhere. STL is helping us out by showing us what things are like, even if we don't particularly like them. I have enjoyed the Vlog, but will never go there.

Thanks Ed/Bert (& others who have commented similarly;) It's difficult to go to film on say Phuket and then NOT go to Patong etc. Same on Bali, had to go see and film the 'main' areas too of course. No worries, upcoming will be visiting some truly chill and even idyllic beach areas. Stay tuned... STL

It’s a very long time since we were in Ubud, we were staying in Sanur, but went up to Ubud supposedly for one night, we ended up staying for three! My home is full of wonderful paintings and carvings that we brought back. I just loved their arts and crafts. I am sure they are a lot more expensive to buy now, and I treasure them, they are my permanent reminders of our stay of in Bali nearly thirty years ago. Ubud has changed out of all recognition, it’s so much more commercial now, it was just a simple High Street with very simple art and carving shops then. Thanks for a lovely trip down Memory Lane.

Likewise stayed in Sanur April '92, rented a jeep and drove up to the volcano area, stayed in Ubud on the way back...quiet and peaceful, very few tourists...mainly artists and local craft people. Found lots of little gems on the way both up and back. Would've loved to go back but life intervened. Looks like it's changed beyond recognition so I doubt I'll go back there...too touristy.

Just had to hit the main areas first, so pls stay tuned. Also, looking fwd to updates on your excellent 'For Riel' Cambodia channel with the big move imminent! Cheers STL

I spent 3 weeks in Ubud. Loved it. Friend was staying in a 15,000 sq ft village with 7 servants right outside the city. It was a mind blowing experience. I find I prefer Bali to Thailand. Love the food and the people. To me, Bali is like Hawaii. Paradise ,but at a fraction of the cost.

If I were in Bali would head to Lombok. Perhaps check to see if there's an Eka Jaya fast boat from Serangan on Bali to Senggigi on Lombok (the other port on Bali is Padang Bai but goes to Gilis first - best avoid Gili T Island and Bangsal port on Lombok if possible). Eka Jaya ferry site: baliekajaya.com I stayed here in Senggigi: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n91ol7eFqMrNaWg.html Once in Senggigi either rent a motorbike (esp if you'll be exiting from same harbour) Or, get a mini van to Kuta LOMBOK: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9tidpOLz8yvf4E.html Actually, now after seeing Belitung Island just 1 hr from Jakarta, I would be going there over Bali (love the Balinese, just not all the crazy bules and hordes of instagram tourists). Yeah, and then stop flying on planes, and stop driving cars, and yes that also means scooters in indonesia and everywhere else, and no, electric cars are no solution because batteries, and stop heating your apartment with oil, or gas, and stop using plastic, and stop eating animals, while you're at it stop eating everything that's not vegan, no, actually stop eating everything that's not fallen from the tree by itself, and never buy anything related to Nestlé, or P&G, or Unilever, and inform yourself about all their brands, subsidiaries, and partner companies which you must not support either, never, and for God's sake don't drink Coca Cola, and Pepsi neither, and definitely stop using the internet, especially Google, and social media, and also don't watch KZfaq, please. It's that simple.
