Episode 7
Many sequels on the NES are considered to be BETTER than the originals - Mega Man 2, and Super Mario Bros 3 are just two examples of sequels that rank much higher than the games that preceded them. Super C is arguably better than the original Contra - everything is upgraded, but it still retains the great flavor of the first game. So why is the original Contra ranked so much higher in the hearts of classic gamers?
In this video I'll answer that question, and then we'll be doing a deep dive on game that defines the term "NES Hard!" We'll also see:
*The location of EVERY Spread gun, so you'll never be without a great weapon!
*How to tackle ALL of the difficult stages!
*The new Konami code for more lives!
*Advanced strategies for defeating the bosses - Secret safe spots, and more!
Thanks for watching!

I generally preferred the Fireball gun over Spread in this version, as it could deliver massive damage with the charged version (9x damage) followed quickly by a regular shot (5x damage) when the timing is mastered. A Fireball player with a Spread partner just wrecks the game as one can expect. On the other hand, a fun challenge is not just beating the game on one life, but also picking up every power-up, even if it downgrades the current weapon. It’s trickier than it sounds, as some power-ups spawn in hard-to-reach places at times, especially in the final levels. I made a video a while back that demonstrates this challenge, along with the rules in the description if anyone is interested in trying it out.

I agree with the fireball weapon. A neat trick to do with fireball is stand on the spider miniboss in level 3 and jump up and shoot down at the spider it will harm it while you stay safe.
@DavidWonn
@DavidWonn 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jopo1226 Oh indeed, the explosions from the fireball have their handy uses, as I’m aware of the method you refer to. The method is slower than a direct assault, but extremely safe as you mention, and a fun way to show to friends. The vertical section of stage 4 naturally has places to take out guns from the explosions without ever exposing the player to any line of fire. The fireball's spiritual successor, the Crush gun in Contra 3, also has some similar exploits in hitting some mini-bosses from the "wrong" side, such as the first one in stage 3. And the flamethrower in that game is even more fun in doing similar exploits, so I almost always like to have at least one in reserve. :-)

One thing I always liked to do on the Laser Chandelier was to start attacking the center. If you knock out the lasers in the middle, you can stay safe in the middle, since the boss never scrolls the still intact lasers off screen.

Konami's American division had a habit of doing really off-the-walls localizations for their games. Snake's Revenge is probably the most notorious example. For instance Big Boss is now "Higharolla Cockamamie"... yeah.

I came here after watching your Contra video! I actually never owned the original Contra as a kid, but I did own Super C. Also, for some reason, Super C was available on the Wii Virtual Console (as well as Contra 3), but the original Contra was never on there. I got Super C and Mega Man 3 for Christmas one year. What a holiday! I think that I kind of prefer Super C to the original. I like how much of a graphical improvement Super C is. In particular, I like the selection of colors used in each stage. The sprites seem a lot more detailed. I also liked how the level design wasn't just straight left-to-right, or bottom-to-top. Some levels, such as Levels 5 and 8, have you moving both horizontally and vertically in the same stage. I agree with you that one of the reasons that this game wasn't as possible as the original may have been its name. I think that for a lot of people, "Super C" didn't immediately signal that the game was "Contra 2". I also think that the lack of the 30 lives code may have been a factor, because Super C's first level is a lot more difficult than Contra's, and a lot of players may have never been able to get past the first two levels on just 3 (or even 10) lives. By the way, I never knew about the trick that you showed for defeating the Level 3 mid-boss (the multi-leg walker thing)!
@frozenburst6463
@frozenburst6463 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when I first played Super C, I needed the code just to beat the first level, I eventually got good enough to beat level 2 or 3 with the code. It wasn't until I beat the arcade of contra 1 and 2 from the arcade and watched guides that I got better with Super C.

In stage 2, there is an easier way to progress. After you get the last 2 turret before you go to the bridge, if you have the spread shot, you can line yourself in the middle and continually shoot and walk forward. Don't stop. The spread will take out most if not all of the soldiers and the turrets you pass won't be able to target you in time. You can get all the way to the door like this. When you get to the boss, you have enough time to get all the way behind him and shoot the main soldier directly, and their shots won't be able to touch you.

The second boss, you can sneak behind him asap. That way you can kill him faster. The forth boss, you can break the middle lasers and stay under it. You will be safe under that blind spot and then eventually take out the lasers from middle toward left and right. Always keep the right and left most laser last for safety. On the last boss. I did quite the same except walk from the ground toward the leg without climb up. When you kill it, you can quickly climb to the top right of the screen. There you can see your character floating mid air during the ending. When play on emulator, you can put both player the same button layout and select 2 players. With the same control, you can combine 2 characters to become one with double the fire power. Sometime I call the laser gun light saber when fire it very fast.

On the laser chandelier, I find it's helpful to take out the 2nd and 3rd lasers from the left first, then you have a nice umbrella to stand under to avoid laser fire, as you take out the remaining 'middle lasers', saving the end ones for last. When you leave the end lasers for last, it's not able to scroll offscreen, keeping your umbrella intact.

Super Cool guide! Super C was an absolute nightmare from my childhood, as the one hit and your dead concept was a bit too much to ask for from me at that particular point in time, much like Battletoads of course hahaha! I got up to Area 4 before getting TERMINATED during the elevator shaft boss battle. That being said, despite the harsh difficulty, I really enjoyed Super C's awesome music and kick ass action, which led me to reacquire and play this game again years later as an adult (lent the game to a friend back in 1992 and never got it back, unfortunately!). Anyway, long story short, just finishing Super C was not enough, so I decided to put myself through a single player 2P mode (letting the aliens kill off 1P Bill on purpose right off the bat, so that 2P Lance is left with even more enemies to deal with, but normal bosses/while most video games make the bosses take more damage while on 2P mode, Super C does not, surprisingly enough!) no items no deaths run. I opted to give 2P Lance (the red hero John Rambo clone, or Rance as he goes by in Japan) a chance, as most single player runs feature 1P Bill (the blue hero, Alan "Dutch" Schaefer clone): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZxkqbR82a2bl30.html Yeah, that final boss is such a letdown and is one of the most anticlimactic final battles in video gaming history hahaha! However, Vigo from Ghostbusters II on the NES remains the most anticlimactic, as the game literally beats him for you and his painting pathetically melts into oblivion hahaha! And for the record, Super C for the NES was the first Contra related video game that I ever played/finished and remains my favorite to this day, on that nostalgic basis :).

@U Can Beat Games The best method for taking out the Level 4 boss is to get directly under the laser array then use the spread gun to chew the center out of the laser emitters and continue shooting them from the center line out, you'll have to stay in the dead spot you created but it is very fast and very safe.

One thing that is worth noting with the spread gun, though it seems counter intuitive, is not using a turbo setting and spacing the timing of your shots. The reason for this is that the spread gun only allows so many bullets on the screen at a time per player so if you are rapid mashing or turbo setting on the fire button, you get a less effective (not as wide) spread.

Slowdown with a lot of enemies on the screen of the original contra was a FEATURE to be enjoyed with friends. Like combining the wow factor of the 360 matrix scenes (a decade+ earlier) with the heightened urgency to concentrate in avoiding obstacles. Therefore its removal in subsequent titles should not be classified as improvements as argued at 0:58.

I thnik that's what really elevates Super C over Contra is you have viable options besides spread. The fireball and spread both have situations where they shine, so when my younger brother and I played, we each take one weapon and smash the game. If you charge, and immediate press the fire button you can fire another shot directly after the large fireball for maxium damage.

There are a few problems: -I agree with you that the spread gun is one of the best in the game, however, there are several places where it is weaker than the Fire Gun. Most Notably levels 7 and 8. In the former, you can kill the purple pods below you by firing at the floor, though one of the requires charging it. In the latter, it makes the section where the ceiling drops safer, as you can destroy the "alien eggs" by just shooting the ceiling. It also gets more range in the overhead levels, and to me, the things that shoot at you from far away are a greater threat than the random spawns. -In level 3, there's actually an easier and safer way to deal with the orb launchers, simply scroll the screen slowly and stop the instant they fire. You can then move to the back of the screen to avoid getting hit, you'll have to jump over some explosions, but it's overall safer. For the miniboss, many find it safer to just jump on it, wait for it to fire, jump off, shoot it up, then jump back on. Your strategy, while solid, requires precise positioning. -On the level 4 boss, it's WAY safer to take out the MIDDLE turrets first, then carve your way outward. This gives you a safe place to be until there is only one turret left. Also, the blue orbs at the beginning DO stop spawning, so you can just shoot them until that happens instead of running under them. -You don't have to kill Jagger Froid's Dragon. It actually travels a set path no matter your position. Just stand a distance in front of Jagger Froid, and it'll circle around you, while still leaving you enough room to destroy his shots, then exit left. -It's actually possible to jump to the slope above the spit statues in level 8 right about as they start firing. It's risky, but arguably less so than ducking while hoping not to get flanked by the runners.

With the facehugger eggs in stage 7, if you use the spread gun and shoot down at the last ones (where you can scroll t so only the tiniest part of the sprite is visible) when the tip of the egg is visible, you can kill it - but with an added graphical glitch where the egg won't "explode," but it will effectively be dead. You can tell that you "killed" it when your shots stop hitting and start passing through, and from that point on the egg will be motionless and harmless in the background, but its graphics will still be there. Try it sometime!

They're actually background tiles and not sprites, because they're off the screen partially it causes the gfx glitch. Same deal as the turrets on stage 2 when you can't hit them until they are on the screen enough, they're just animated background tiles too.

They are alien parasite-infected humans. In Stage 7, they start having arms like the Xenomorphs in Stage 8, suggesting that they are hybrids or are morphing into alien life forms themselves as a result of genetic experimentation. EDIT: One starts coming on the screen at the bottom left at around 22:32

I believe It is a mixture, at the end of the Famicom (Japanese version of the NES) Contra, if you held down Select and Start as the island exploding cutscene was playing, and held them down the entirety of the credits a secret messaged appeared that translated to something along the lines of, "Foolish Earthlings! Did you really think you destroyed us? We will take over all of Earth's Bases and by the time you realize it, it will be too late. Red Falcon will Live Forever!" (source: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMmnpreGqLqWj40.html). Then in Super C we clearly see some Soldiers are Aliens in Disguise in Stage 7. But Stage 2 is called Fort Firestorms Warped Mind Command Center, hinting that some soldiers are actually human, but are just mind controlled to do Red Falcons bidding.

I played the hell outta Super C when I was younger. I was garbage at it, of course, but I always came back to it, no matter what. My brother and I would play coop. I never got Spread, 'cause I would always - without fail - lose it immediately. :D I personally love Super C more than the original Contra, but that's just rose-colored glasses. Some of these bosses though... the hell were they smoking when they named them? My favorite has to be the Babalou Destructoid Mechanism (Love his design, too.)

Anytime you see a difficulty change or code removal in the American version of an old game, it’s usually because of the US rental market. Rentals weren’t really a thing in other regions; people tended to buy their games. In the US, the fear was that if a game was too easy, people would rent it and beat it during the rental period, which would discourage them from purchasing the game.

Other tips that are good to know when you play (Warning, long as hell, but pretty detailed): *General Tips* - If you crouch and press the jump, you will be able to jump (you would have to stand up first in the first game). If you hold down as you are about to land though, and you will instantly touch the ground in your crouch form. Using this ability will make it nearly impossible for the turrets (stage 1) and Jameera/Jagger Froid's Spit Soldier (stage 8) to hit you, and this allows you to attack the enemies that spawn while dealing with the turrets and Jameeras. - Turrets and other machine based enemies in side-scrolling levels have an exploding animation, DO NOT run into them while they explode, they can still kill you if you touch them as they are dying. - The R power-up not only makes bullets shoot faster, it also allows the bullets to travel further in the top down levels. *Tips Throughout The Video* - For turrets in the second level at 9:17, it is best to stand just to the side of the guns on the turret. A good spot would be with the sprite of Bill is to the side of the dots on the tiles closest to the turrets guns (Confusing? Imagine Bill's sprite at 9:17 to be more to the left to where his model is just to the side of the dots he is standing on). This will make the turrets shoot straight, but not hit you, just don't move too close or they can aim diagonally and hit you. - A better strategy for the turrets at 9:39 is to stand in the middle of the bridge and run straight through (sometimes depending on how they shoot, you will need to turn back and run again once they stop shooting). If you want to kill them though then stand pretty much where UCBVG stood at 9:51, and gun them both down. - For the boss at 10:00, there is another strategy you can do which is quicker. The boss will move based off of the verticality of the player. So if the player is higher up, the boss will move up, but the boss can only go so high. So if you take out the red gunners (1 if you want to be quicker but it is more risky), go behind the boss and watch out for the green gunner (and red if you only killed 1 red). Once you are right behind the green gunner, spam your shots, you will shoot faster since your bullets are instantly hitting him and the game cant slow you down with its bullet limit. - For the motor launcher at 11:07, you can shoot the bullets it launches and destroy them if it is taking too long to kill the motor. Don't stand too close to the motor because 1. touching it will kill you (like UCBVG said) and 2. a support capsule (the football looking object) will spawn that has a laser gun. Laser guns suck in this game. You don't want to collect it because you were shooting the bullets and accidentally shot the capsule and was forced to get the gun. - A great strategy for the Outer Defense System is to stand where you gun shoots straight up and right into the purple gun to the bottom of the boss, but your character is a bit to the side of the gun. The bottom and top turrets can't hit you as long as you don't move. The characters hitbox is weird so you will be alright from those 2 guns. The side guns can hit you though. The first shot they shoot will miss but the next one you will need to jump over (note: do not jump over the side guns first shot because the bottom gun is too low and will kill you from jumping into it). Then the when the guns change positions, do the same thing you did last time. If you were spamming your shots fast enough with your spread gun (if you still have it). You will be able to defeat the boss with the guns only changing positions once or twice. - A better way to deal with the bubble guns at the beginning of stage 4 is to just shoot at the bubbles until they stop coming after a while, there is actually a limit to how much each gun can shoot, it will take longer, but it will guarantee you will not get hit by them. - For the barrels on the ceiling at 14:05, if you want you can shoot the ones falling right on top of you and destroy them before they hit you if you got the spread gun and can spam fast enough. If you think you will not hit them in time, just duck and you are okay. - Another strategy for the Laser Chandelier is to shoot as fast as possible to destroy middle lasers. If you destroy at least 3 lasers that are side by side, you can stand right under them and safely shoot the other lasers. The issue with video's strategy is the boss will continuously move to the side until a working laser touches the side, so you could easily get cornered. - For Jagger Froid himself, it is just better to stand right in front of him (in case the perspective throws off how you should aim at him). If the dragon is defeated, them just stand close enough where you can hit him, but far enough where the bullets don't spawn on you. - If you want to make the game feel more creepy and cinematic, the "Alien Skulls" are actually dead Alien Eggs (the entire level is made of them). - If you want to take care of the Bugger Spawners quicker but more safely than jumping down in front of them, you can jump into the underside of platforms and shoot them at an angle (hitting your head on the platforms will not make you fall quicker than jumping without one in the way), just make sure to fall back onto the platform you were on before you fall right in front of the spawners. - The Eggron at 24:32 cannot be killed unless you run off the platform and quickly run back on (your character will be high enough to clip back onto the platform if you are quick enough). For some reason, doing that enough will make the screen scroll low enough for you to kill the Eggron. - For the falling ceiling in Red Falcon's Poison Palace, if you don't have the Spread Gun or aren't comfortable using it to deal with the bubble enemies when the wall falls, then use the fire gun that appears right before it. The cool thing about the fire gun is that it can penetrate walls with its explosion. Making it a piece of cake to deal with those enemies, but that is the last power up that appears, so you will have to use that or your basic rifle against the final boss. - If you want to waste no time when the ceiling falls, jump at the edge of the platform and you can usually make the jump to the next platform. Just don't jump as the ceiling falls, you will get pushed into the pit.

While I do know things, I didn't know of the tips for the Metal Spider Boss and didn't know the Temple of Terror's horns could be destroyed either. Funny bonus tip is that If you defeat the final boss and hold right and spam jump, you will jump onto an invisible floor and be flying in the air by the time the theme plays .

The reason the extra lives code was taken out of the American release is the same reason most releases have the difficulty cranked up here. Since renting video games was only a thing allowed in the us at the time, the thought was by increasing the difficulty and making it impossible for players to beat in one or two rentals they wouldn't see as much of a decrease in sales because of renting.
