Scenes from the busy Monday of Randy W. Schekman, professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his role in revealing the machinery that regulates the transport and secretion of proteins in our cells. Congrats to him! My niece completed her PhD and is now doing research at the University of Rochester. She recently joined Dr. Schekman at a private dinner. So proud of her too!

This is a moment that makes me proud to be a UC Berkeley employee contributing, in my small way, to the betterment of humanity. And yay for Dr. Schekman's unflagging support of pubic universities! Congrats!!

That looks like a bloody good day for him. Slaving away at some weird corner of knowledge for years and years - then someone saying - "hey - that's REALLY good!" How extremely satisfying that must feel. The look on his face in the last 10 seconds or so the vid says it all.

With the reputation of UC Berkeley going rapidly downhill lately (it is one of the least respected universities these days thanks to the protests and toxic ideologies of many of the students and professors) it's good to see that at least in the field of scientific research, this university is still at the forefront.
