Shoshana Zuboff's book, 'The Age of Surveillance Capitalism', reveals a world in which the sovereign forces in today’s economy are advertisers, manipulators, shadowy assemblages of state and private actors whose goal is to predict our behaviour, and change it. Their tools are surveillance, provocation and addiction.
IIPP presents this special public lecture featuring Shoshana Zuboff; and a panel discussion with Guardian journalist Carole Cadwalladr, Paul Hilder from openDemocracy and whistleblower Shahmir Sanni.

@Andro mache , Interesting that you target Nancy Pelosi but ignore Mark Zuckerburg or Jeff Bezos. Who is richer, do you think? I don't know where you would get the idea that politicians drive the profits of capitalists or are instrumental in facilitating it (other than the fact they have helped corporations avoid paying taxes and often provide corporate welfare)? As we are so often told from, so-called, conservatives, politicians have no idea how to make money in the private sector. They only know how to tax and spend. It is true politicians are in a privileged position to know what to invest in. But the idea they drive capitalism so as to enrich themselves is absurd.

I heard a futurist on NPR talk about companies planning to print data circuits on the skin for mobile health applications by 2030. In the light of this conversation, absolutely terrifying.

Here in this country where I live currently, the government is already experimenting with chips under the skin for "a select group of the population". What qualifies for this group is of course the government itself that determines that. We have been here before as a species. Hitler and his henchmen had a similar system only it was not digital. This is a phenomenon that needs daily confrontation and any politician that fails to fight this is part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Only me? Jesus...come on people. Every day since I was forced to take on a computer identity, just to continue living in society, I've questioned the goals of those in control. Technocratic dystopia and extortionate manipulation are not an acceptable basis for human existence. It's beyond sickening, or frightening, way beyond evil, or greed.

Consumerism , buy, sell, debt , fear , repeat. Left wing government control, taxes, debt, fear, repeat. Governments and large corporations don't care about Individuals. We are just a. number. These people don't talk about turning off horror news, banning pornography on the net, . Turn off your digital devices. Go on a holiday . Use your enormous power to choose life . Electronic media devices make us more disconnected in our own bubble worlds of entertainment. Governments are shit scared of losing control and therefore will try to maintain their game plan at any cost.

I think the people who are trying to make this very important issue a left/right political thing is very wrong. This is how misunderstanding and polarization are created. It is not hard to make a long list of power abusers from on "the left" as well. Look for common stands on specific issues instead of fueling a truly nonsensical and destructive left/right polarization.

I got to know of Shoshana Zuboff through Reading one of my favourite writers Elif Shafak. May I recommend Elif Shafak to people out there.She is A Humanist par excellence as much as Shoshana Zuboff is. Birds of the same feathers flock together.

The response to them is REBEL. Humans still have the power to rebel, to resist. Play their game, open multiple facebook accounts with different behaviours for each one. Use them as a tool.

Consumers should have an option to decline hidden electronics within purchased products. Signed user agreements are licenses to steal. It's also being sold and resold. We need laws that share proceeds with the abused consumer. WTF...

Came here for Zuboff, but knowing Skidelski had some words too really made me bust a nut. Wow. You guys should look into the Pinephone too, I would love to hear your input on that device from a tech Co-OP, which is an important place to buy from if you like Wolff's work. I feel like he could intersect here too. I think I'd get some burns on my hands if that happened.

It makes it even more interesting when we know that they have found fossils of huge wombats, bear size beavers and sloth’s, bison size rodents, 17 foot tall rhino skeletons, 12 foot giant humans , Their tools were surveillance, provocation and addiction. Bob Binny, a former Intelligence officer, warned NSA that there was too much data for their agents to shift through, including keywords, etc., to assess quick info of impending attacks. He had offered a better system, but was ignored. Then 9-11 "happened". I also feel the collection and storage only benefits those landlords of the facilities, and uses far too much electricity, unnecessary, in the process. 5G will dwarf what we do now. It is imperative to fight this rollout! The 20-100x the intensity will counteract any benefits from Smart City or gadget assistance that is proposed. 27 frequencies, military grade antenaes, thousands of satelites, small cell towers every 100 meters---we cannot accept this diabolical sabbotage.

Always be wary of any company that offers you a service for free. Nothing is free, with the exception of air but I’m sure people have discussed the financial commodification of that. We are all being had , money is god, greed is king, and I lament the tacit approval the masses through ignorance have given so many malevolent entities their social DNA.

Like any totalitarian entity they want to control and manage. Who are "they"? .......that would be the stakeholders in this game, private business and government alike (which we know is the same anyway). There's no conspiracy, just a convergence of interests among stakeholders.

Had me until they started discussing Brexit. Seems like the Remain side are trying to blame someone else for their failures. The fact is, those on the Remain side tended to prosper while the rest of the country lost. There's a reason why everyone hates London. I don't think that many people were influenced that much when it came to that vote, in the same why people were going to vote for or against Hillary in 2016. That's said, Ms. Zuboff's thesis is spot on.

Laws are not constructs on their own, Tender Heart. Laws are made by people. And as long as people serve their own agenda, laws within a legislation system will be ignored with corruption in tow. What the real power is that protects us is our moral standards. Those are our individual laws present within us. When these laws coincide with governmental laws, peace and harmony will be restored.

Check out, the ACLU Surveillance & Technology ordinance, making its way around, local u.s. communities, im the past 5 years. Also, please look into, tech. surveillance, and data collection accountability Alomg with, its recent legal precedents, as well. This is how we can rise up together. And that can help all people,, ask & work towards, better civil rights &, civil protectiona. Along with, better democratic practices , sustainably, and peace. These are incredible tools, that csn ask for equality & equity, that can help bridge, the digital divide, for everyone.

"If something is 'free' it's likely that you are the product" We have always had surveillance, nothing new and not particularly bad, sometimes essential. We like to keep an eye on things, we are risk averse and so keep an eye out is normal function. T he message I get from Shoshana is that gathering data to make a coherent view is bad and that markets are essentially bad. This is simply yet more of the doom and gloom style writing that is so un-creative. Folk bought into surveillance with their choices and they can buy out of it the same way. If folk were particularly concerned they would only buy phones that didn't feedback data to the networks etc. "Surveillance provocation and addiction" I guess these are ominous sounding trigger words designed to sell the idea.
