As a ucsd college senior and computer science major, I've collected 5 pros and 5 cons for attending uc san diego. Note that these pros and cons are just my opinions (or things that I've heard), so take them with a grain of salt!
UCSD is a fantastic school, giving students quality education and fantastic opportunities regardless of your major. Yet, no college or university is without their cons, most notably is ucsd socially dead? Whether you are planning on going to ucsd, looking into ucsd for the future, or even a completely different university overall, I tried to make the pros and cons broad enough so that they highlight some points you should look into when considering different universities.
UCSD in particular is very interesting in that it is divided in to now 7 colleges (ERC, Marshall, Muir, Warren, Revelle, Sixth and Seventh) where each college has their own focus, GEs, living area, dining halls and ~vibe~.
If you want more information on the UCSD college system, check out my older video here:

Class of 2020 here, majored in International Business and minored in CS. I would just like to add to your STEM-related sections is to just considered UCSD as a polytechnic school (similar to Cal Poly or Caltech). UCSD is awesome for STEM and tech majors. Personally, I got into my current job at Maersk in Los Angeles due to my exposure to data analytics through a BUSINESS class at UCSD. That's right, unlike other UCs, business students' curriculum consists of finishing all calculus classes (calc 1, 2, & 3), and even if you are majored in social sciences, your GEs would require you to take at least a STEM class (I think Muir's students have to take some physics/bio classes). I think these embedded factors are also why UCSD seems "techy".

Hey! Tysm for the balanced vid. I'm from Canada and am considering UCSD as an option (public health major) but I'm on the fence if it's worth it bc of the price. Ya out of state tuition at UCSD is massive, so that’s definitely something to consider. I think if you got into top Canadian schools for a fraction of the cost, that sounds pretty good! I’d say make a pros and cons list for both options, because I’m not too knowledgeable on Canadian schools. Good luck!

If we commute for class and don’t live on campus does the college still matter? Usually only if you live on campus right? Or does it only mean general education and writing classes since we are off campus? Which other UCs or schools are like UCSD where they split into different colleges but all have the same majors?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
If you commute, the college you are in still matters because you still have to take that college’s general education requirements. For example, I was in ERC and you have to take 5 making of the modern world classes regardless of your major and whether you live on campus or not. If you did live on campus then you would live in ERC as well. Unfortunately, I’m not sure of any other UC that splits students up into colleges based on major, but I’d definitely suggest researching more if you are interested. Generally though, people in your major classes will have the same or similar majors to you!

My main major that I chose is Mechanical Engineering. Do you think there's any way that I could change my major to Mechanical Engineering instead? Thanks in advance.
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 3 жыл бұрын
I think you’ll probably have to apply to mechanical engineering. Since it’s a capped major, they’ll likely look at your grades, then put you in a lottery system to be allowed into the major. I’m not totally sure though, so I’d reach out to UCSD academic advising about the specifics. Good luck!

@ByteOfMichael

That's a big decision and unfortunately I can't make that for you :/ . I never visited UCSB so I can't speak on the campus, but I know its a great school. UCSD is also a great school in a great area, and I know that many students at UCSD are STEM and pre-med. Either choice I think is gonna be great for you. If I were you I'd go through the courses at each school for your major, research/internship opportunities nearby, consider the social life/surrounding area, and the overall price. Hope this helps a little!
@stalemint624
@stalemint624 3 жыл бұрын
Homie go to UCSB if you're actually trying to go pre-med, you're only going to get very minimal benefits from the "prestige" UCSD might have over UCSB, and the thing with this is you're more likely to get a lower GPA at UCSD because of how competitive it is. I'm pre-dental currently going to UCSD, also got accepted to UCSB, but wish I went there. (This may be slightly biased as I have a strong dislike for UCSD since they did not accept my IGETC because I completed it in high school, and UCSD is the only UC that doesn't accept the IGETC from high school students) If you want a good idea of the schools vibe maybe check out the the reddits, one thing I gotta say is UCSD campus is suuuuuuuper nice IMO, but UCSB is really close to it due to its location.

@@stalemint624 Hi! I am actually really interested in UCSD and I just got my acceptance to Marshall but I also am expected to obtain my IGETC certification as a senior in high school. Your comment is extremely helpful because it is important to me that my IGETC credits do not go to waste. Did they take a look at each class that you took and give you some credits or did you have to take all of them all over again? Also, which college are you in? Any info would be appreciated
@stalemint624
@stalemint624 3 жыл бұрын
@@melissachea3298 Hey Melissa, super good question, I'm a freshman finishing up my lower div sequences (chem, Physics, Bio) because UCSD is not accepting the IGETC. The reason is not that I did not have it completely accepted but simply that UCSD is one of the only UC's which doesn't accept the IGETC for a high school student (which is crazy because it is much more difficult to complete it as a high school student than with 2 years in CC). I am at Muir, but from my understanding no UCSD college will accept the whole IGETC and all UCSD college will have a few more courses for you to take based on your college (everyone takes a DEI, a super easy essentially waste of time, and then usually 1-2 english class if your IGETC is accepted. I am transferring back to CC over this summer and then next year I will apply to a different UC to have my IGETC accepted because I'm not going to waste my time retaking the IGETC's here at UCSD when the school doesn't have anything to offer me at the time. I will be talking with the Dean soon to see if I can make some sort of exception because the situation is pretty ridiculous, but I would be careful in going to UCSD with an IGETC from high school. If you got accepted to for example UCI that is a great school and very similar students in that you have a more socially dead "social scene", and a really cool location (of course UCSD's is a little better), or if you got accepted to UCSB that is also a great school slightly lower in ranking academically to UCSD, but I have a few friends who went there a couple years ago and they liked it aside from housing situations. Good luck! (I suggest you just schedule a quick meeting with your counselor at your CC and make sure that you 100% confirm that it can be accepted) - one quick thing to note is if you did apply as a transfer through CC and not through high school to the UC's, and you were accepted this way the IGETC will count because technically you aren't a high school student in that case and your college status reigns above.

Since there are a lot of sub colleges within UCSD, how do they pick which college I get to go to if everyone mainly ranks a certain college as first pick? All majors can be and will be in any sub college right? Are the GE/Writing requirements a lot different from each one? Like for example, everyone has to do English, math, etc right? Then how many classes differentiate one sub college from another?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean by “sub-colleges”? At UCSD there are just the 7 colleges each with different general education requirements. If you are curious on what the general education requirements are for each college you can just google “UCSD [whatever college name] ge requirements”. When you apply to UCSD you have to rank the colleges based on which one you’d want to be in the most, then they assign people based on their rankings! Each college has a different focus, so for example ERC has a big focus on international studies so everyone in that college regardless of your major has to take a bunch of history, writing and language classes. Hope this helps!

@ByteOfMichael

Jacobs school of engineering is not in any college (but it’s physically located in Warren college), it’s just a department, similar to how there is a math department, biology department, etc.. You don’t have to be in any specific college to be in the Jacobs school of engineering, it just depends on your major. For example if you were a Math-cs major you’d be in the math department (but you can still be in any college). Likewise for the Jacobs school of engineering, if you were electrical engineering, then your department would be the Jacobs school of engineering.

Hello! Any tips for an incoming transfer student for Math-CS during covid-19. @ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
Ya of course! So most classes will still have discussions/sections over zoom, so you can always ask homework questions there. Additionally, many professors have their office hours over zoom too, which is super easy since you just have to go on the computer instead of walking to their office. I haven’t had a class with tutors since UCSD moved online so I’m not entirely sure how that’s handled, but I imagine it’s through some online portal (although in the fall, they may bring back physical tutor hours in the lab depending on the situation). Socially, it will definitely be a little bit harder, I’m sure that clubs and Greek life will still recruit but most likely online in some way, so definitely make sure to check out those! Also if you’re planning on living on campus at some point then the easiest way is to make friends with the people on your floor or in your building. Hopefully once everything becomes physical again, social life will get a lot easier. Hope this helps!

So my mom moved to California end of my freshman year and she was my 'financial support'. So by the end of my sophomore year I qualified for in-state tuition. You should def try to save the most money you can as student loans suck haha. Here is a good resource from the University of California about how to establish residency www.ucop.edu/residency/residency-requirements.html. I also suggest emailing a financial aid office because they can help you way more. Hope this helps!

Hello, idk if MiQL will see this but I gotcha, sadly I'm in the same boat as you and starting of last year and moving forward, we can't get a major in Computer Science and Engineering due to it being capped, it used to be a lottery system but they've changed it so we can't get it anymore, the only related major to it is Math-CS but you have to weigh in if you really want that cuz it's more math based than computer based

My daughter is going pre-med and turned down UCSD (for UCI) because of ERC. Other than the GE requirements that are most likely exhausting for pre-med majors, the fact that "Eleanor Roosevelt College does not have general education requirements to which all AP or IB scores can be applied" was another deal breaker for her.

I literally cannot for the life of me, find the list of UCSD majors and the colleges that separate it? I found the general list of all UCSD majors, but, everyone says that UCSD is split into 6 colleges? So I’m trying to find what each college’s major are, like pretending I’m trying to see which majors are in revelle, what majors are in Roosevelt, etc, could you help? And what other colleges/UC or not UC, has a system like UCSD that splits the colleges?

And where is the Jacobs school of engineering? Why is that not listed as a college? Or is that a sub college within one of the 7 colleges within UCSD in general? This is so confusing, could you explain in detail, in text
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
Ya sure, so the majors aren’t divided between the colleges, any major can be in any college. The 7 college system only determines what general education requirements you take and where you live. So, if you’re a math major for example and you were in ERC, there will also be math majors that aren’t in ERC. Additionally, the Jacobs school of engineering is a “school” rather than a college. Same thing with the rady school of management and the school of medicine. These schools aren’t really influenced by the college system. They are basically just departments. The big thing is that whichever college you are in, you will find all different types of majors, but you will all be taking the same general education requirements. Hope this helps!

Im confused? So if pretending, youre a CS major and you got in Muir, then if someone else is CS Major in Revelle, are we taking the same CS classes at the same location? Or are we taking the same CS classes but at a different location? Im so confused, because like UCLA, if youre in pretending sociology major, it is in UCLA L&S, but if youre CS major youre in UCLA Engineering, so Im so confused in how people say UCSD has 7 colleges, but all have the same major? Are we all taking the same major classes at the same classroom or different classroom based on what college we were accepted into?
@ByteOfMichael
@ByteOfMichael 4 жыл бұрын
You will take the same classes in the same locations (unless you have different professors) as other people in your major. The only thing the UCSD college system does is separate people based on general education requirements and has nothing to do with your major. So if there are 2 CS majors, one in Muir and one in reveille, they’ll both take CSE 11:introduction to java in the same place but they will have to take different GEs. You can look up the different college general education requirements to get a sense of what each college requires, but all you have to remember is that whatever college you are in doesn’t really impact the classes, people or locations of your major.
