Uday Bhawalkar: Raag Gavati

This virtual concert by Pt. Uday Bhawalkar was performed and recorded on the occasion of Kishore Mariwala's partner Shalini's 80th birthday.
Panditji began the presentation with a brief introduction to the concepts, and features of Dhrupad along with some misconceptions about the form as well.
He then began his recital with a sublime alap in Raag Gavati, which was followed by two beautiful bandishes entitled "Tero Hi Dhyan" and "Karam Kar Deejo" in Chautala (12 beats) and Sooltaal (10 beats) respectively.
He was supported by Sukhad Munde on pakhawaj. Tanpura support was provided by two of pandit-ji's young students Tanuja Pande and Meghana Sardar.

What a breathtaking performance! I had never heard this raag but I became an instant fan after this rendition.

Merveilleuse musique , interprête exceptionnel, d'ailleurs comment séparer ce qui est indissociable, ce raga Gavati n'est en soi rien qu'un schéma qu'anime et chaque fois d'une manière absolument unique l'interprête. La comparaison s'impose avec le musicien de jazz et aussi avec le chamane qui va rechercher l'âme du patient enlevée par un esprit mauvais... Mais et ceci est fondamental à noter: non seulement de façon extrêmement précise: (schéma du raga, grille du jazzman, façon d'opérer du chamane) mais en observant de manière inconsciente parce que parfaitement intégrée dans l' insondable complexité de ses circuits neurologiques le cheminement que lui impose l'éthos de son groupe d'appartenance (merci d'excuser cette expression prétentieuse, mais le mot "culture" employé à tort et à travers ne me paraît pas convenir, pas plus que les "racines", mot qui dans la langue populaire de mon enfance désignait des carottes !). D'autres que moi diront peut-être qu'il en va de même de la musique savante européenne... allez savoir, pour ma part je pense que nous sommes alors sur un plan différent ne serait-ce que parce que l'écriture exacte limite inévitablement la liberté d'interprétation .

Superbly rendered. Also well detailed the chosen Raag Gavathi with embellishment as and where required. Highly soulful rendition. Also, accompanying Artistes justified well their presence through their performance. God Bless You All 👍👌🙏👏

There are so many wonderful Dhrupad artists, but Uday Bhawalkar is my favourite. This performance is sublime! The pakhawaj player is wonderul too!

Pt Bhawalkar is nadbrahma , he came from gadhavalok his redering voice comes inner soul of heart. God bless you, Govt of India, must give support to develop, this art great Indian Classical music.
