By doing this, he's deflecting responsibility for his actions. I mean, the guy, after drinking, expressed interest in going upstairs and then denied having a girlfriend afterward. Therefore, the ring seems like a way to keep her invested in the hope of a commitment. Not saying she's entirely right, I mean, in my opinion, if you get to this point of not trusting your partner, there's better ways of expressing this insecurity and trying to figure it out, or just breaking up, then making this whole show.
