I was at the store trying both and decided to get the UE and I don’t regret it, after playing with the EQ I got it to sound the way I like it and you can crack the volume all the way up without noticeable distortion. Loving it so far. The design of the UE can blend at any atmosphere while the JBL looks very outdoors, also it’s wider which takes more space and is $100 more.

There’s no point in using the outdoor mode on the boombox... it just cuts all the nice deep bass. I love the sound of the boombox in indoor mode

I am a die hard JBL fan. I think they dominate the portable bluetooth speaker market and I own 2 harman kardon onyx studio 4's, a JBL charge, and I bought the JBL Boombox a month ago so I could pair them all with JBL connect+. I decided to buy a Hyperboom to test it against the Boombox in several different settings, outdoors, indoors, small room, large room, different room placements to see what sounded best and I was so bugged by it cause I had just bought the boombox and there was no doubt the Hyperboom had it beat in every way, especially bass. Don't get me wrong, the boombox has tons of bass but Hyperboom without a doubt has more bass and gets more on the low end. I tried several bass heavy sounds that slowly drop in hz and the hyperboom consistently continued to carry bass notes when the boombox would drop them. I am not an audiophile but I am a die hard JBL fan and I think that the Hyperboom sounds more like a JBL than the Boombox in that the bass is insane. I ended up selling all my JBL/harman stuff and am trying out UE just for fun even though i'll probably go back to JBL eventually. Got a second hyperboom and it is fantastic in stereo mode. Also got a megaboom but it is nothing compared to the JBL Charge or extreme but I like to stay consistent with brands for multiple speaker pairing. I think JBL beats UE in every category from the flip to the extreme but for the first time, they have without a doubt been outdone by UE in the Boombox category. Of course the waterproofing of the boombox is a huge bonus and I think the plastics on the Hyperboom are not as durable or resistant to scratching as the boombox but I left the hyperboom playing out in the rain for a half hour and it was totally fine. If your focus is more on overall sound (including bass)and overall loudness then the Hyperboom should be the way to go but if you want something more rugged that you aren't going to have to stress about something happening to it with the elements than the boombox may be a better choice.

The UE is a beast. It also can connect to other UE speakers in the family which is cool for an indoor outdoor party so the same playlist is going on both.

The footprint is very different between these 2 boxes. The JBL is about 3”x5”=15” footprint. The Hyperboom looks approx 10”x10”=100” footprint. The foot print of any sound system is always. boomier if flat on the floor. Which is why a live band always put the vocal P.A. on 6’ to 8’ stands. Also hyperboom is taller. As such the hyperboom has a warmer sound and cover bigger overall frequency range and bass. Look at the bottom of the JBL it is raised off the surface on the bottom. Hyperboom is the logically better design because. It’s uses basic sound engineering. As a pro musician, I’ve dealt with the acoustics of a room and understands the optimal set up of any source of sound.

I bought a Boombox2 last year and I love it. Battery life and sound quality are amazing!! Highly recommend. However I bought it on sale $200 off so it wasn’t too painful!

Amazing video as always. I am quite surprised by the UE speaker. I always loved their design but the sound was to thin especially in the deeper selection. Now the sound has turned to good, but the design.... Why didn't they built it round like all the smaller speakers? The JLB still sounds good to me but in direct comparison the mids seem to be somehow "boxed in". Thank you and stay healthy. Best wishes from Germany.

The Boombox seems to have slightly better separation and a little more definition in the high end. Both are pleasing for bass response, but feel the Hyper Boom sounds a little boxy or confined. Good sound is in the ears of the beholder.

The thing is that in the UE you aren't changing the mode, you're changing the equalizer, I have read that the UE uses microphones to give the best experience depending on the environment

I feel like the bass is stronger on the UE Hyperboom but doesn't get as deep as the Boombox.

I had the original boombox and I wanted something new that would outperform my current system. I got the hyperboom and ended up returning it. I then sold my og boombox and bought a boombox 2. Much happier with this style.

Great comparison.. 2 good contenders.. I gonna choose the boombox with slight edge, UE did a good job to squeeze much bass and the mid really floats.. But jbl prevail with its clear mids clarity and the bass kicks plus overall sound quality goes to jbl, UE just get deep for 45hz..

I think H/K should do an Onyx Mini, but with the studio 5 design and better performance than the old Onyx Mini, do you agree?

The hyper sounds more balanced, more normal, with a nice stereo image

I shelled out for two white Hyperbooms to enjoy pair-ups. They both sit on top of my old school stereo speakers but the one in a corner sounds incredibly better with sounds reflecting out off the walls. Its mate, out in the more open part sounds less dynamic. Nevertheless, these two monsters give a great version of a range of beats and bring heaps of pleasure. Loving Spotify and the mighty Hyperboom twins!

No one ever talks about the longevity of the lithium ion cells. Friend of mine has a three year old UE Boom 2 and it cant be without the charger for more than 2 hours on low. My three year old Charge 3 blinks red after a couple hours, but goes strong for another 4 to 6 hours on the red light.. and for that reason only, I go with JBL. I hope UE has moved on to Samsung cells since. I like how louder the boom 2 sounds inside a restaurant with ovens, noisy refrigeration equipment and 30 foot ceiling. Fills the room with more mids than JBL. Great video

all other comparrisons i watched made the ue seem more clear, but this one made the boombox sound more clean?

I like the sound of the JBL better. It sounds more crisp on the high end. The UE has more mid range but the high end treble is missing. The Bass is not much different to me. The JBL is usually how I adjust my equalizer.

The UE has an upper bass boost, pushed up mids, pushed away lows and highs. The jbl brings more low end out, and a bit too much treble, also better mids. I like the JBL more mainly becuase of its lower bass. We must wait for the JBL Boombox 2. The boombox is almost 3 years old and is a little better.

I preferred the JBL boom box sound signature to the UE Hyper Boom. It has a much wider sound stage to me. The highs did however seem overbearing on some tracks at certain parts of the songs. But o still prefer the JBL.

Clean that Boombox!

Most JBL portable speakers always have the best deep lower bass however, they don't maintain that rich bass when volume is cranked up to the max.

hyperboom sounds more seperated and wider by soundstage and bit more bass. the jbl boobmbox is too bright in the highs but i think the UE hyperboobm could need some more high/treble definition/sparkle...

I think the hyper boom sounds better but the form factor of the JBL and connect plus is just to good to pass up and when u already have another JBL it’s the obvious way to go, if u don’t have JBL go with hyperboom

HyperBoom has a more open sound stage. Where as the JBL have a more close sounds. I actually prefer the JBL.

have both of these great speakers... hyperboom is an overall better purchase : sounds great, more features, looks good, can connect to tv..... but I use my JBL Boombox2 more. Simply because of the low bass....and it's slightly easier to carry around (in the car, to the park, riding on the bike, etc).

But if you press the bleutooth and minus button on the boombox than enters in te low frequenzy mode( lfm), than it goes louder and increases the bass.!!!

I feel like the JBL sounds much better at lower volumes but UE sounds way better at upper limits. The JBL at upper volume limits loses its clarity and has too much ringing treble which is quite disturbing to listen to. The UE seems to maintain better balance overall though it is quite close between them. I assume as the UE has a slightly larger decibel variation, being able to play softer and slightly louder than the JBL, that playing at 50% volume the UE would probably be slightly softer than the JBL. To make a fairer comparison you’d probably have to calculate what % is equal in dB to one another at each volume.

The boombox 2 power output is 80 watts RMS so it's going to be 20 watts louder than the original
