Apart from the global illumination I appreciate the realism of the shadows cast by the light sources. Namely the shadow cast by the person itself is much sharper than the shadow cast by the bars of the "cage" in which the light is located. This is exactly what you would see in real life. Objects closer to the ground have sharper shadows than objects closer to the light.

Lumen is designed for realtime GI and reflections, not for offline rendering or only high-end specs... There have to be cut corners. Also Lumen reflections aren't meant for mirror like surfaces and software version won't be by devs words. Hardware acceleration will come though, they said it during one of the official livestreams, so hopefully we will get triangle-based intersection reflections.

@@MarvelMaster it's basically a simplified version of ray tracing (both for Lumen reflections and GI). They trace rays into a signed distance field (think of it as a VERY rough simplified version of your scene). It works pretty well for rough surfaces, but looks awful in any mirror surface.
@niks6600973 жыл бұрын
@@AlexanderKoshernov signed distance fields are not always rough, its a vectorized representation of scalar raster geometry, without using weird equations to represent shapes like normal vectorized images, its all about research there might some algorithm of distance fields, which can 1:1 represent billions of triangles without any rendering cost..

well, in fact, UE5 copyed the principle of qUINT RTGI: it's Screen Spaced Ray Tracing.
@nickpinkowski3 жыл бұрын
do you really think qUINT was the first person to do that? No. And in fact, it's not only screen space, but also offscreen due to Lumen being combination of lighting techniques. Curtains were too thin to have fallback in offscreen tracing scene as it uses SDFs.

Combination of software gi like lumen and hardware raytracing for reflections for the best performance
@nickpinkowski3 жыл бұрын
yeah, of course, we should have everything at once... rather than being happy from new tech you still complain, come on man, mid range hardware isn't that fast yet, what do you expect to have after not having anything dynamic? and bad reflections? you clearly don't know what you are talking about, accurate offscreen reflections are huge improvement, there are way more rough surfaces than mirror-like (the second will probably still use second cameras or hardware accelerated triangle-based intersection reflections for newer GPUs) on which you won't even notice the difference between triangle raytraced version
@TTROPVNR3 жыл бұрын
@@nickpinkowski you talk from a game dev perspective i guess, i want to use ue5 for the film industry, raytracing is slower but does the job better for now, within its limitation, lumen is nice but incomplete, so again you have to work around which is tedious. Offline renderer are catching to online render with full solution. i was just hoping unreal would get their first
@nickpinkowski3 жыл бұрын
@@TTROPVNR But remember that Unreal Engine is primarly for games and so is Lumen and its reflections. I think that there will surely be triangle based reflections soon as well as a part of Lumen, because they look way better on mirror-like surfaces, but we will see, it's just an early access. You can still use typical raytraced reflections in UE for film so I don't really understand your comment here

How so? This is ray tracing, and it's much faster/better on RTX cards... It's just very well optimized so it also works on non RTX cards.
@lucastonoli32563 жыл бұрын
@@stanger8992 "Dead" is a bit of an overstatement, but this certainly will harm the implementation rate of RTX specific raytracing as -comparably- it makes less of a difference to have it than not have it. Same with the latest keynotes from AMD showing their DLSS equivalent works on old and new Nvidia cards. From the perspective of game developers, using resources and time to make your game compatible with features that are trapped on some cards of a single manufacturer that isn't even the same of consoles and doesn't even perform that great on the bulk of the cards that have said feature is a real time waster. For Nvidia, neither this nor AMD's announcement are great news, they invested a lot of cash on this technology. Also worth pointing out: RTX was off for this video demo, as stated by the video maker himself, no reason not to believe him.
@stanger89923 жыл бұрын
@@lucastonoli3256 You're probably right. I just hope they invest in ray tracing even more and we'll see fully ray traced gi and reflections in a few years.
