Dustin Poirier thinks Islam Makhachev is underestimating him ahead of UFC 302. Although Dustin Poirier has confidence that he will beat Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, he is a sizeable betting underdog.
This is Poirier’s third career lineal UFC lightweight title shot after losses to Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and former titleholder Charles Oliveira. To earn the title shot, Poirier scored a TKO win over Benoit Saint-Denis in March at UFC 299.
Dustin Glenn Poirier (born January 19, 1989) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is a former Interim UFC Lightweight Champion. As of April 16, 2024, he is #4 in the UFC lightweight rankings.
Islam Ramazanovich Makhachev[1] (Russian: Ислам Рамазанович Махачев; born 27 October 1991) is a Russian professional mixed martial artist and former sambo competitor. He currently competes in the Lightweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is the current UFC Lightweight Champion. Makhachev has competed professionally since 2010, along with becoming a combat sambo world champion in 2016 and two-time Russian national champion at 74 kg

It’s a very tall order for Dustin but if you’re counting his out you’re underestimating him. Nobody gave Max a chance again Justin and look what happened. Thats one of the greatest things about the UFC. You never know what is gonna happen.

I agree Dustin has a good chance and Islam should prepare well. However it’s not as good as Max had against Justin, people didn’t count him out as much as Dustin is being, and rightfully so.

@@mmapicker I don’t think that’s not a logical choice. Really that’s the most logical choice. However I wouldn’t say that Dustin has no chance. I’m a big fan of diamond and I’d be lying if I said I’m not rooting for him to beat Islam but I understand mma and this is probably Dustin’s biggest challenge of his career with the exception of the Khabib fight. Dustin was the closest fighter to beat Khabib. He came closer than anyone else. You don’t want to count him out.

Poirier is my favorite fighter ever. I love his grit and style. He has a humble attitude and puts everything on the line every time. Just like Holloway. I hope he knocks out Islam. I don’t care if he looses a rematch I just want him to win the belt one time before it’s over for real, not the interim belt. He’s the second best in the division. He got close against the last 2 champs and at this point is probably better than both of them. He’s outlasted everyone

Dustin has biggger power in his punches but his footwork is slower and less agile than Islam's. If he's able to implement effective jabbing and can corale Islam to exchange combinations w/ him then he has a chance. But I think Islam would opt to clinch and knee him on the inside rather than stand and bang w/ him though. He's going to get thai plummed, eat knees and kicked on the standup (focused shots to the body as much as the head).

Let me help - One of the greatest American wrestlers of all time. Runs one of the best wrestling gyms in the world. Champion in 2 MMA promotions. Dana stonewalled him for years and by the time the UFC signed him his body was broken. Had they signed him 5yrs earlier - he would’ve been a UFC champ.

I feel like since Dustin has more to gain by winning and more to lose by a loss that he'll be the fighter to want it more in the ring. I’m a new fan with zero mma experience and will never claim to understand this sport. With that said, Poirier is my favorite fighter because win or lose, I’ve seen no one tougher.

Islam as no hole in is game, but, I hope Dustin find one. The first round will be freaking intense, the pressure by Islam will be terrible. But one punch by Dustin and you go to sleep.

Islam is a lot better than Dustin. Dustin might be a better pure striker but he will not be able to handle the pressure and the ground game. There are levels and this is gonna look like the Khabib right all over again.

I think it comes down to how serious Islam takes this fight and if he sticks to the basics , I remember when khabib in round 3 vs McGregor played standup .. (scared the sh*t out of everyone) cause a good left straight or hook would clean khabibs clock .. (anyone hit with Conor's clean left would be out) , dustin is the same, he has awesome standup and his ground game is workable (probably better than Conor's), we saw how st Denis was smoking him on the take downs, but once those punches came in on standup and hit st Denis , it got him .. if Islam ensures he takes it seriously , doesn't play standup too much like khabib that time against conor and sticks with his normal game plan and the basics, it is an easy fight for him, but if he tries to be creative and try to beat him in the standup .. it will be dangerous .. Dustin is dam good on the feet
