This Video Is Part One
Welcome to the Great Basin Desert!
This area stretches over most of the state of Nevada and into Western Utah. And inside this swath of desert is Great Basin National Park, coming up out of the low desert to heights of over 10,000ft. Stunning landscapes!
So I wanted to try a different route heading North from St George, Utah up to Great Basin NP. This route would be mostly on the dirt (on the first day) and would allow me to circumnavigate the National Park creating a 450 mile loop.
Part One consists of the 200 mile ride and camp on the East Side of the Range.
Part Two of the ride is the 250 mile stretch on the West Side of the Range.
So please join me as I head North into the Great Basin Desert to explore this incredible area!

Just a few miles up the road from Baker toward Lehman cave are several gorgeous campgrounds by Baker creek and Lehman creek.

A little tip hikers and bikers have been using forever. A kitchen trash bag with arm holes cut out can work as emergency rain gear, at least for the core body. It can also help keep a person warm in unexpected cold weather. The road you're on looks like a great riding road. Deep sand is my kryptonite. I'm working on getting better at it. I really like the CRF300L. I wouldn't mind adding one to my little stable. That and a DR650 to go with my current DRZ400S would cover a lot of bases.

Thanks for another great video. I’d love to ride there some day. I’m in Manitoba, Canada, and of course our terrain is quite different. But, we do have Jarritos!

I've been to Manitoba, lots of forests and lakes iirc. Yeah, a cold Jarritos hits the spot! Thanks for watching!

I'm South of you about 2 hours south of Las Vegas. If this ride was on Wednesday May 15th, we got the same storm come through that evening, complete with thunder and lightning.

I really enjoyed this moto camping. Knowing when to go in the dessert is something I would love if you would discuss more, especially for us novice moto camping folks. Also why you chose the Honda and not the Yamaha XT 250 on this adventure. Thanks.

Great ride.....lots of alone time to unwind....like the camping and cooking sections. Any sightings on the 450 himmie's in your area? Garth

One thing I've grown to appreciate about the 300L is its lighter weight over the DR. It's become my go to bike for backcountry solo camps when I'm not sure of the terrain. Thanks for watching!

I'd love to get a dual sport to ride the backroads but it's not in the near future. I don't think even though I saw Dork in the road riding one that the CRF, KLX or TW would be a good choice for a big guy, but I haven't ridden a bike since being a kid. So it will be a first bike when I get one. Which bike would you recommend for a new rider that'll be on the road most of the time?

Best bet would be to go to dealership and have a sit on a few bikes to get an idea of how you'd feel if you're on your toes or flat footed while static, this can be a big deal for new riders. If you're a 'big' guy, you'd more than likely outgrow those smaller bikes you mentioned pretty quick. Even better if you can get some test rides in. Have a look at a KLR650 or DR650, both these bikes are under 10K new and both these bikes are easily found in great condition on the used market. Good luck amigo!
