@@AllThingsOnePlace Yes but we should know it before buying it. I have never seen this value in the Amazon or AliExpress product page. The Wotobeus 2W idle consumption is huge, I would've thought twice before buying if I knew. Unfortunately I discovered your excellent KZfaq account only yesterday. BTW it would be a great idea to review the cheap 65w USBc chargers available on AliExpress for around $12. Keep up the great work 👍

The design is good in terms of efficiency and power conversion on both of these adapters. It is a lot of power in a sealed box for that Wotobeus adapter. There is a reason your computer power supply has a fan, ha. I'm still waiting for a good small adapter.

No problem. Answer on these power adapters is a lot. As long as you are doing work that Wotobeus isn't a bad choice. I might rig up something to run lights with better efficiency than the terrible bricks that come with those. Perfect application since there is no idle, it's unplugged or on.

The main reason I bought the uGreen 200W is for travel purposes. We might travel with 4-5 devices, so istead of having a few adapters, it is way nicer to only have one charger. Especially while travelling, when you might only have a plug/socket in the room and I started carrying an extension cord, which is not ideal. I was thinking to also replace the home chargers for my workdesk (laptop + 2 other USB-C devices), but your clip convinced me not to do that and use the OEM chargers that came with the laptops and phones.
@AllThingsOnePlace

Yeah, for a large amount of devices the one brick for several devices makes sense. OEM bricks do tend to be the best quality and match for a device though.

I like the way the wotobeus does their wall cable. I get that folding pins are more compact for traveling, but I find one long outlet cable let’s me use shorter usb cables which ends up being less clutter. Having 5 extra long usb cables running all the way to the wall is 1) a mess and 2) way more expensive.

Well, they offered a free charger, I didn't take them up on the offer. @AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
Yeah, powering three devices that can use decent amounts of power means a little higher power level is better, so something with 100 watts will power all three devices, maybe not to maximum capability but at least everything will work. If you don't mind swapping cables then smaller adapters are okay. Maximum portability you can get one of the Anker Nano adapters. When you step up to the 100 watt adapters you lose a little portability but gain a lot of functionality.

I've been using the wotobeus for some time, and I really love it for the small size. For traveling with a 100w laptop and cell phone, I only need to bring one charger, which is fantastic for business trips. The heat is real, but since I don't have two devices both consistently drawing 100w, I haven't hit the temperatures in this test. I've been using it in both 110v and 220v environments.

So when searching for some alternatives to the WOTOBEUS , I found the Verbatim 240w 4 port charger, which is a wall charger that claims to provide 140+100+65+60 watts in a very compact size, which is a bit scary (I think it will run very hot). Oooooo, a big boy 200 watter, delivering the smackdown in a super hot charger. The Wotobeus will burn your house down, lets not go with that. Besides, even if it didn't, most capacitors have a thermal limit of 105 degrees C, which means, they will begin dying at those temperatures, as they can only run for so many hours like that. Also, the mossfets need to be properly cooled, usually they have a heatsink attached to them. But, if the radiating heat has nowhere to go, its just gonna thermal soak itself to meltdown. There used to be a time when electronics came with vents to allow heat to vacate, what happened to those times? I think the Ugreen is most certainly a better unit, you at least don't have the fear of it burning your house down. But like you said, neither are quite perfect. But, to be honest, since most USB power adapters suck, just being on the same level of Baseaus, is really saying something!

But yeah, can I use any cable that will fit so I'm international proof with this charger if I just get a local cable? Thanks!!

@danielhouston8725
@danielhouston8725 11 ай бұрын
Ok thanks. I just learned planes only allow two power banks though. Still I might buy that ugreen block just because that removable cord makes it international proof. And if I ever want to charge three 60W banks at the same time I can. Fyi I'm just going to keep using the green cell power play ultra (buying another one) rather than using those baseus blades. The powerplays also charge in two hours (same as the blades) but they're 26K mAh. They're also much heavier but I decided I don't care. If I can only pack two banks I want to max out their capacity and the powerplays are the only other banks I can find that charge in two hours with a "small" input of 60W. My ideal would be the 140W ugreen charger which lets you split the two usb-c slots into 60 or 65W each but I don't see how it's any good when you're stuck with whatever socket option you choose at first. I'd almost like to complain that the company is making an item practically made for travel specifically but fails to see it that way. Anyway it looks like their 200W charger was accidentally made suitable for travel.

It depends so that cable is PD 3.1 so the phone has to support 28v charging to take advantage of that. The usb PD 3.0 specification would be 20v at 5 amps maximum. The cables don’t go above 5 amps in typical use. There are some custom protocols that push this and in general any advantage is going to be lost in power losses in cables and converters so not really worth it. Just marketing.

That is a good one. I guess it depends on how many devices and what the devices are. If it's a pile of phones, then something with lower wattage per port and lots of ports, but I've not seen much like that. They tend to be high wattage on one port or two ports, then some odd power sharing scheme. I'd probably just go with my usual devices, the Baseus 100W GaN3 desktop or the Satechi 165W Desktop charger. I bring them with me all the time. They have four ports and can charge a laptop and several phones at once. If you also have some low power devices, I would get a two port low power charger like one of the dual port less than 40 watt chargers. So, probably a two prong approach. One big adapter and one small adapter.

Power factor correction question. Does power factor correction cause an adapter to make an audible buzzing sound when consuming a modified sine wave?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Жыл бұрын
A 'modified sine' wave is a nice way of saying square wave which has tons of harmonic content in both the voltage and current waveforms. This can most certainly cause buzzing in a power supply of any type. This will be highly variable depending on the design of the power supply. I would expect the buzzing to actually come from filtering components, common mode choke and capacitors, as opposed to the PFC circuit (which is a boost converter, it effectively won't be doing anything with a modified sine as an input). The goal of active PFC in a switching power supply is to reduce the peak current draw of the main DC filtering capacitor charging directly off the bridge rectifier and mains. A high duty cycle modified sine (or a 50% duty cycle square wave) through a full bridge rectifier is just DC so the PFC circuit can boost this voltage as normal if it isn't high enough already or do nothing if the voltage is high enough and nothing will happen. The components before the bridge rectifier can still buzz though since they are seeing all those harmonics. Not impossible for a PFC circuit to make some noise though when expecting a sine wave to get confused with a high slew rate square showing up instead. Great comment and the answer would require a ton of investigation and really specific tests on every possible device and possible waveform. The answer will vary device to device.

@@AllThingsOnePlace Thanks for the in-depth response. I've noticed some power supplies buzz on modified sine wave (aka square wave) inverters while others don't buzz. My anker nano ii 65w power adapter doesn't buzz. My 96w apple power supply does buzz. My 30w apple power supply doesn't buzz. My monitor does buzz. My projector power supply also buzzes. I bet all of them do buzz , but not all of them are loud enough to be audible. I'd be curious to know how using a square wave affects the quality of the DC power supplied over usb-c.

99% of the time you don't. These are closed up with glue or plastic welding so once you crack or saw them open they pose a major safety risk. Also, if a proprietary chip inside is damaged you won't be able to get a replacement. Unfortunately, so is the state of modern electronics, most of the chips in these devices are not available for the public to purchase so you may be able to find the problem but your chances of repair are very slim to none.

Meh, that "disconnect ports to renegotiate" approach is utter nonsense and indicative of uninspired Chinese copy and paste programming. Not only do most (if not all) of the chips have built-in power monitoring so it would be rather easy to detect if the overall power consumption is over the power limit and if not then all is good anyway; most devices are not going to draw maximum power continuously anyway if at all. Also if there's an overload situation, one could simply (and without interrupt) renegotiate the port(s) using the most power to restrict them and only if that fails force a renegotiation on that port via a reset. Of course even if a current of 5A was successfuly negotiated, the device can only draw as much as the supply is willing to deliver, so a proper implementation could always use current limiting to simply deliver less. What exactly is the point of having a dedicated MCU pulling the strings and programming the USB port controllers if all they do is reset those controllers whenever something perfectly normal happens... you wouldn't slam the brakes and grind to a halt whenever the satnav tells you to make a turn, would you?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 9 ай бұрын
haha, that is very true. The technology is there and it is very true that they could do more software smart power sharing on these since they do all have the processing power. I think the products coming onto the market now are just starting to do this but still very limited, it doesn't renegotiate until power is used but then still does a full reset, but most still reset on plug and unplug, in my video on using the 200W adapter to power led lights, its on then off then on then off then it finally figures it out and they are all on.
