It has been a bit since my last video. I've been working on finishing up Endhall (it is in beta now so I'm polishing it and getting ready for a steam release) and planning how to do this Godot roguelike. I think I have an idea of how to do it. It will be a simple roguelike but I think that is the best place to start. The plan is to start recording/uploading videos for it next week. I'll see you all then. Have a great weekend.

Hi Benjamin! This dungeon design is very beautiful to my eye. Could it be used in a non-profit, non-advertized, relatively small audience project where the idea is to demonstrate that a fully functional rpg can be built even with a software not in any way meant for game making?

For advanced tiling in aseprite. Select a tile (with selection tool). Press Ctrl+B , (that will create a brush from the tile you just selected). And in the top bar (where the "Opacity/PixelPerfect" options are), you can select the beahavior of the new brush [PAttern aligned to source/Pattern aligned to destination/PaintBrush]. This will save you a lot of copy pastes :)

If anyone is having a problem with changing the indexed colors hue on the fly like HeartBeast is at 23:28 make sure the "lock icon" directly above your pallet is "unlocked". If it is locked you cannot change colors dynamically even while on indexed mode. This was driving me crazy but I ended up figuring it out through another youtube video.

Hi HeartBeast! So I've had 3 programming classes that were heavily c++ procedural based, almost no object oriented focus. I can't thank you enough for your videos. It helps take what I already know about programming and makes game development a more accessible side project outside of my regular job. I'm gonna start with small achievable games to understand my development engines, and maybe one day create a full project. Thank you so much for everything you do!

I recently purchased Aseprite and I plan to get Gamemaker as well when I get the extra money. This tutorial was very cool and I actually watched it all lol. Very interesting that even the smallest color changes can make it really stand out and look detailed. Can't wait to jump into it for real combining Gamemaker and actually making something. I made a simple little dog and animated it, learned about tagging and switching different animation loops. Aseprite was definitely the best purchase I made.

Just so you know if you double click with the selection tool in aseprite it will select the entire tile, makes it so you don't have to manually select it each time. also the alpha value of the grid is under Edit, Preferences.

With a bit of optimisation for space, pretty sure you can get the whole tile set down to 9 tiles. I see variations being added through rotation, mirroring and offsetting pixels within the tile to wrap around themselves. So you'd have: 3 floor tiles, 3 wall tiles, 1 vertical wall top, 1 horizontal wall top and then 1 corner wall top. Actually if you wanted to change the art slightly and keep the same style you could produce micro tiles and get the floor tiles down from 3 squares to 1 and a half and the wall topper tiles down from 3 to 3 quarters of a tile, giving a total of 2 and a quarter tiles for the entire tile set! What a bargin.

Hey, Ben, I was wondering if you had any tips for exporting tiles from Aseprite. I spent a long while creating a layered, 8-frame animation that I wanted to export as individual .png tiles. If you have any tips for a workflow that you may have developed, or if you decided to use a different editor... anything info like that would be much appreciated! Thanks for putting out these videos! They are extremely helpful.

To anyone interested that cannot afford aseprite or any other program, anything done in this tutorial can be made in GIMP as well. Yes, I know, simply opening Gimp for the first time can be overwhelming, but consider the fact that it is pretty much equal to Adobe Photoshop, and learning to use it can be a powerful asset in your arsenal. And for the weak hearted, if you want to create an indexed colormap in Gimp look for "Image > Mode > Indexed" and press "convert" and in order to locate your generated colormap press "Windows > Docable Dialogs > Colormap". GO GO Opensource !

I think the tops of the walls are weird, shouldn't the lines follow the upper layer of bricks? 🤷‍♂️ Also, it would be nice to have the front wall designed, so it gives it a bit more perspective, and just play with the opacity, once a character goes behind the wall. Otherwise, a very nice tutorial :)

so you are making a tileset for godot and instead of using a Node->CanvasItem->Node2D->TileMap to easily edit and preview your maps in godot while conserving space (because y'know tileset) you complain that copypasting things in aseprite is not as handy? the tool is right there in your engine, and you said you were making a tile set, not giant background image anyway :P oh also just fyi aseprite is free if you know what a CMake is ;) it's not really "pay to buy", more like "pay for convenience of having a ready made exe file".
