This is the longer version of my video that explains the features of the automatic sliding door I built in my house. It is powered by air, it is fully enclosed in the wall, and it has the appearance of a standard interior door.
Visit my blog for a full build report and all the details: uiproductions.blogspot.com

The tech he is using to do this is actually from the late 60's early 70's or about. I should know, I'm a commercial auto door tech for 15 years. I repair/install stuff exactly like this all day long. Pneumatic auto doors are old school but still used in some cases. Now it's small low current drawing electric motor gearboxes and digital controls that operate swinging or, in his case, sliding doors. Looks like he got his hands on some old pneumatic parts or borrowed the idea to do this. Either way, I give him props as he obviously must be mechanically inclined. I myself have a auto swing door that leads from my garage into my house. After my garage door opens then the auto door into my home opens. Has a electric lock even. My coworker has a auto slider in his house too.

Very cool! My grandparents built a house in 1974, which had 5 single pocket doors. My grandad had the idea to motorize all 5 pocket doors, by putting electric motors to each of them, in the attic above. I remember pushing those buttons over and over again in amazement, until he finally told me he was going to have to sell the house just to pay the electric bill.

This is the second home in which kzfaq.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).

You know ever since I was a little boy watching episodes of Star Trek I thought to myself I was born in the wrong time. I have often wanted to have a home with features like automatic doors laundry chutes , waste and recyclable chutes, anyway I rarely take the time to comment on videos but it's made me reconsider my earlier mentioned thought maybe I'm not living in the wrong time after all this is just too damn cool you've inspired me if only for a moment.

I remember an interview where Deforest Kelley was visiting The Next Generation sets, and he and Gates McFadden were talking to each other about the difference between each Enterprise set. And she told him that the Enterprise-D doors were actually operated by pulling a rope. And she demonstrated doing it, cause they had the set wall taken apart, showing it’s ‘guts.’ It was kinda interesting. But, what I see here is a little different

That's some really nice work. Impressive. I was thinking about the problem of "false alarms" from people walking by. The only way to do it would be to detect their direction so you can know if they intend to come in. That's doable, but typically you wouldn't want that. You would want them to knock and you find out who it is, etc... before giving permission for them to enter. THEREFORE the only people it really needs to open for is the residents or if it's an office, the ones who work there. So all you have to have is an app that sends a blue-tooth signal from your smart phone or watch ALONG WITH the direction detection, and you're golden. In fact, that should be a patentable product.

Motion sensor on ceilings looking down? That way you could "blind" them if they saw too far into the hall and room. Also, in the days before PIR motion detection, there was microwave motion detection that relied on the doppler effect. Passing by such a motion detector parallel to the wall yeilded no change in frequency, so it wouldn't open... walking toward it provided the desired doppler effect and triggered.

Although your automatic door opener is better (especially the sound) my grandfather built a house in 1972 which had every door on the ground floor of his ranch style home, (except the front door and rear sliding glass door) on an automatic opening system, including the door from the garage to the kitchen. Every door had its own electric operator mounted above it, in the attic. As a kid, I LOVED going there, just so I could spend the day walking through the house, opening and closing his doors. It actually caused him to regret putting them in because all of us grandchildren kept opening them, constantly. I’m actually being serious. It would piss him off!😂. (Now that I’m 45, I understand his frustration) Long story short, excellent job and cool design!

+mac taggart - "I'm curious who he needs to lock in from the outside" Hopefully not to hold someone prisoner inside... I assume that when the outside is locked, the button inside will still open the door. .... Makes sense to be able to lock it from both sides, like any other mechanical/digital door lock. But, I would replaced the button/keyswitch/lock on the inside panel with another keypad, and set a key-code to hold the doors open and a key-code to disable all pneumatics (manual mode). You allow the door to be locked from the inside so people can't enter when you're inside, like a normal "button in knob" doorknob on a bathroom or bedroom door. You allow the door to be locked from the outside to prevent people from entering the room while you're away. I just question the usefulness of a keyswitch with a physical key on the inside panel that seems to just be left inside the keyswitch/lock at all times (while you're in the room). When you have unlocked the doors from the outside, why do you need a key while you're in the room? And, when you leave the room and lock it from the outside, no one can reach (access) the keyswitch inside the room.

This is probably one of the coolest nerd adaptations I've seen in a home application. I only have one issue with it. It's pneumatic. The fact that you have an air compressor constantly at full capacity. Even a small tank can cause a lot of damage if it ever ruptures. I hope it never does. I would probably opt for electronic actuators, or something along that line so it's not under pressure.

The fact that the door farts every time you open it kind of makes it annoying. Imagine trying to sneek out in the middle of the night to pee, and the door farts the dog wakes up, he farts too because he got scared to death, everyone smells the fart the dog made, assumes there is a gas leak so they wake up and quickly grab all their valuables to run out of the house only to realize it was a dog fart. All of this because of a door.

This isn't even close to the original Enterprise doors. The original had someone in the walls to open and close the door when someone approached. 😂

To make it a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy door, just add a recorded robotic voice where the door tells you how happy and fulfilled it feels opening and closing for you.

Incorperate a light curtain in the door jam to sense obstruction presences, and you can vastly shorten the timer. Door will close at soonest possible oportunity without contacting the obstruction. Also, a proximity sensor can be used on both sides to hold the door open when someone is close but not in the light curtain. This may be a better option than a motion sensor control. It would only activate when someone was standing close enough.

It actually makes sense that the control box is inside the room because if the door stops working or something you could manually release it and escape
