There has been a lot of interest in the UJK Parf Guide System and a number of questions. So, I have brought things together in this Xtras video. Several people have asked about suitable material for bench tops. I use Medite Smartply MDF as recommended to me by my professional woodworking friends. I may make a video about other Medite Smartply products later in the year. I have included a number of details about the 20 mm bit and a piece about putting extra holes in your bench top.

Great video Peter!!! i have received my UJK parf system and set up my MDF 3/4 parf table and just finished doing the test cut. mIm really impressed how accurate it turned out. the diff was 0.36mm on a length of ply 575 mm long, resulting in a final cut accuracy of 0.000157mm. that's pretty awesome.

Peter I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this design is the work of genius, the beauty is in the application of the theory(Parfagoras,lol) and the execution of the jig, it's a really clever piece of work, very well done Sir. I also have to comment, the quality of your video presentations is equally impressive, you are a very fine teacher indeed, it's always a real pleasure to see your work. Tony

Medite seems to be unobtainable here in Australia, so I went with Forescolor, similar or possibly identical to the Valchromat that Axminster uses for their multifunction bench tops. I found that in humid weather this stuff grows huge amounts of mould, despite not being exposed to anything other than humid air. Quite the health hazard!

Just a warning - and would be interesting to know if Medite or Valchromat have the same issue. Park guide system Itself works a treat.

Regarding the 48 mm offset hole: I would have considered using the orange drill guide with the drill in the wrong bushing (the one for 3 mm pin alignment bushing). Also using the orange drill guide and drill dog to put 3 mm holes with offset is something I have done previously. (#MK1owner)

Hi Peter, great system! This might be part of your future video but is Medite MR safe in terms of formaldehyde?
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, When I did my dust study a couple of years ago (Google the video) I was told then that Medite MR posed no formaldehyde risk but I have not checked this in any way. Mt professional woodworking friends use it as the normal MDF is not good in that respect. Peter
@stephens4229
@stephens4229 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification Peter. This might be a silly question but do you have any tips for ensuring the very first set of holes that are drilled are parallel to the edge of the board, and also, how far from the edge of the board they should be? In your PGS part 1 video you seem to start by clamping the ruler without thought, however I'm sure you measured it first.
@NewBritWorkshop
@NewBritWorkshop 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, One of the things that I made clear is that steel rulers are not necessarily straight - perhaps 0.25 mm out (ie not much). However, the holes in the PGS are dead straight. So, If you really need to get the holes absolutely parallel to that first side you need to do some very careful measuring which is just not worth the effort. Using the PGS you will get the rows and columns of holes at near perfect right angles (see the 4 cut test) and so all I do is get the first Parf Stick about where I want it to be, clamp it and carry on. There is no perfect distance from the edge and it does depend on your layout. The MDF needs about 10 mm between its edge and the nearest hole but your layout might demand more. If your design requires perfect parallel holes to the edge then AFTER the holes are made and enlarged to 20 mm use the array of holes, and the Parf Dogs to set up your guide rail so that you can cut that wafer thin slice to get the two spot on. Just a question about what you mentioned first, the maximum depth of cut? I wondered, what's the outer diameter of the forstner guide bushing? If it were the same diameter of the cutter, and you really needed a deep cut, could there be any mileage in turning the bit around and dropping the bushing into the hole you've started?

G'day from Australia All of my bench dogs are 3/4". Some Veritas but most made from 3/4" copper water pipe with brass end stops. Is there any likelihood that you may be producing a 3/4" system in the future? The hole spacing does not matter. I assume that the US market will want 3/4" product.

It is a bit tricky for me to check as I am unable to phone Axmnster until next week. However, I understand that the PGS should be coming in stock within 2 weeks. Pre-order customers (there are many ahead of you) will get theirs first but the supply should be very steady and so yours would be soon after that. The Veritas Parf Dogs (504543) are in stock now. The Veritas Small Bench Dogs (504542) are shown on the web site as being available in 3 weeks. These are in stock at some of the Axminster stores if you live near one. Good luck. Peter

Hi Paul, Medite is available in the US but perhaps not in every region. Try and get the best possible grade of MDF as the drilling will be much easier and the finished top will last a lot longer. In the past I have used HDF (High Density Fibreboard) which is not cheap but makes a superb top. Good luck. Peter
@mrgunn2726
@mrgunn2726 Жыл бұрын
@@NewBritWorkshop Medite is a brand name for Medium Dinsity Fiberboard (MDF). MDF and lots of other materials are harder to come by and costs have been rising. In the US go to your lumber store and ask for Moisture Resistant MDF, it may be a special order item. I have been researching MDO (Medium-Density Overlay) plywood aka Sign Board, it is plywood sandwiched between to layers of hardboard aka MDF; the idea is to see if I can increase strength and decrease the weight. However, 3/4 inch (19mm) double sided MDO is nearly impossible to find and is expensive.
