@ben26436 Mate, it's really not. NZ had more strict lockdowns than VIC does, and they're doing great now. We're better off locking down hard for a short period of time than letting this drag on. The sooner we can get this under control, the sooner people can go back to work. Edit: Let's talk stats. Approx. 3000 people died of suicide in 2019 in Australia. A 200% increase would be an extra 3,000. Sweden, a country that never locked down has 570 COVID19 deaths per million and counting. Adjusting to Australia's population, that would be 14,250 deaths. Which is worse? I'm not meaning to undermine mental health. Both are serious. ----------- "The Australian Government will provide 10 additional Medicare subsidised psychological therapy sessions for people subjected to further restrictions in areas impacted by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic." Australia is interesting because I am 40km on the other side of the Victorian border. Over there they have curfews, mandatory mask wearing, movement restrictions and schools have gone back to remote learning today. Meanwhile next door everything is open and life is mostly normal and productive and limits are very proportional to the risks which are currently low here. Schools are operating, no significant community transmission since April and the borders are closed except for essential travel though we have some idiots evading border controls. Hopefully the numbers in Victoria respond soon. Currently they are getting numbers like 700 new cases a day and around 10 deaths which is small by world standards but probably towards the limits of effective contact tracing. It is a big source of potential spreaders for the rest of the country so the other states have close their borders. Victoria really messed up with their hotel quarantine and then monitoring of workplace and family transmission. Also early on their testing per head was lower than the other states. Australia still has a massive advantage with our remoteness, border controls and public health. Our governments and institutions have been reasonably effective, regardless of politics and although there is some Facebook brain damage around our society is just about cohesive enough for people to work together, especially in the smaller states which are a bit more like NZ in that regard.

Extract From Disease Mitigation Measures in the Control of Pandemic Influenza There are no historical observations or scientific studies that support the confinement by quarantine of groups of possibly infected people for extended periods in order to slow the spread of influenza. A World Health Organization (WHO) Writing Group, after reviewing the literature and considering contemporary international experience, concluded that “forced isolation and quarantine are ineffective and impractical.”[63] Despite this recommendation by experts, mandatory large-scale quarantine continues to be considered as an option by some authorities and government officials.[64] [65] The interest in quarantine reflects the views and conditions prevalent more than 50 years ago, when much less was known about the epidemiology of infectious diseases and when there was far less international and domestic travel in a less densely populated world. It is difficult to identify circumstances in the past half-century when large-scale quarantine has been effectively used in the control of any disease. The negative consequences of large-scale quarantine are so extreme (forced confinement of sick people with the well; complete restriction of movement of large populations; difficulty in getting critical supplies, medicines, and food to people inside the quarantine zone) that this mitigation measure should be eliminated from serious consideration.

I cant find any studies that confirm this - in fact quite the opposite. When questioned at their daily briefing today - they said that under 10s don’t get symptoms- however that’s no help, if they can still spread it!!! John recent research papers from Glasgow Scotland are basically saying the herd immunity required is around 20% ....explained by the fact the 70% is a vaccine herd immunity threshold , but natural herd immunity takes into account a vastly different response from every individual....check out the paper ...most scientists are extremely interested in this theory and it’s backed up by figures in New York and other areas around the world like Wuhan and can see where the researchers are coming from and are taking it very seriously. I’d like your thoughts on this. Again I must remind you England and Wales are not solely the UK....and that four countries make up the UK .

I very much doubt that the Greater Manchester restrictions will help or at least take a lot longer due to what I'm seeing around me, I live there and my daughters gymnastics are still doing summer holidays camp all this week and just only today advertising that they still have spaces for Thursday and Friday this week to and we are talking 7 to 8 year olds girls who hug all the time, mine is not going to them that's for sure, also my ex's is posting lots of images on Facebook of her and all her mates about 6 households all at the pub almost every night since the 31st plus you can see other people too in there, all very close no masks nothing so I'd put money on it that its wont slow down too much up here yet.

Very heart-warming; a huge struggle, how Caroline and her peers do this shift after shift, I can't imagine - and as she says to be able to deal with watching the trauma patients are enduring without their loved ones at their sides, must be harrowing at best. My Uncle died like that, even thou' he didn't have C-19; devastating for his children, wife & my Mum, his only sibling. Both my sis & my dad have had surgeries in the UK recently - of course totally alone - and because of the extra burden this virus is exerting on The System, Nurses, Docs, etc., the normal level of compassionate care can't possibly be there, not saying of course that they don't care, I can't imagine there's time to sit by a bedside and hold patient's hands... I don't know if it would be possible for specially trained support staff to be bought in to do this, but I very much worry that we as a society are losing our Compassion to this pandemic. I do hope your Dad is bearing up - I don't know what to say to people under these circumstances... I so wish the skeptics and flouters would just understand this one aspect... Stay safe & keep well everyone, from Australia...

It is true the number of clusters are increasing in Spain : a cluster in Spain is any group of more than 10 positive cases. In the Spanish news they say 25% of clusters are well over the 100 cases ...In the three main east northern regions the clusters are way higher in the thousands ! (Navarra, Aragon , Catalunya have experienced an enormous surge initially of asymptomatic cases but in Aragon : in the last 2weeks ,now entering the third week, The contagion is causing symptomatic cases with increasing hospitals admissions and ICU up to 50% capacity but most cases are young adults In the early 30ies !. What started as a cluster of infected fruit pickers( due to foreigners provided with substandard,very poor hygienic living conditions by the farmers )in the frontier between Aragon and Catalunya has progressed into asymptomatic cases and symptomatic cases mostly in young adults . Madrid has still high number of symptomatic cases as well while other areas have lower rates. In Aragon the Government advised back in mid July against travelling outside the region in order to control the contagion ,some of my friends cancelled their holidays to other parts of Spain but very sadly I have heard stories of other people from Aragon disobeying the advice and travelling to other regions :even from Spanish nurses ! Telling me that they were not prepared to cancel their family holidays in other regions because “we have to learn to live with this virus “! human nature remains very selfish and ignorance is among all stratus of society regardless of your profession.Sad times for my country of birth.

This test was negative (No IgG no IgM), but since the antibody level is apparently decreasing rapidly I'm not sure what to think of this result... Interesting perspective, Dr. Campbell on the CFR in the UK. I would also point out that even if 1.65% case fatality rate is deemed to be an acceptable level of risk (which I suspect is debatable and that's being generous on my part), those figures are assuming that we continue with the same restrictions and measures as before. If we all of a sudden lift them, you'll see cases shoot through the roof, hospitals overcrowded and a CFR of multiple percentage points, perhaps as high as 5%. Can we afford to have 3 million Brits die from this illness? I suspect not. Yes these measures are hurting the economy, yes it is causing a great deal of pain but it's a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. Society needs to start thinking of the we and not the me. We've won major battles in the past be it World War 2 when we are united in our resolve and are willing to make sacrifices to our liberties for the greater good. As Donald Trump once said, "this will all wash over," the only question is when and how many lives and families were ruined in the process. Let's try to minimize the destruction folks!

There's a ten day lag between lowering R values and daily infection numbers, since people are infectious for about 10-14 days on average and most infectious for about 7 days. So for example if 10,000 people were infected today, they were infected by someone that was infected 2-14 days ago. So if the R value went from 1 to .9, you wouldn't see the decrease from 10,000 cases a day to 9,000 cases a day until at least 10 days later. In fact the 10,000 cases could even increase a bit for a few days before going down, since there are already cases incubating that haven't been discovered. Also just because the R value is .8 to .9, doesn't mean that you won't have thousands of cases a day. You'll just have less cases then before. You could even have more cases than before if the previous R value was .7-.8. So simply having an R value below 1 doesn't mean a decrease in cases. It largely depends on how much virus is out there. Also there are other variables like increases of testing and more asymptomatic/presymptomatic and mildly symptomatic people getting tested...

@Samizdat Neomodernist Things have certainly got worse for businesses and individuals affected by the cluster in Aberdeen and surrounding area and there are many additional smaller clusters appearing that are currently being managed by the contact tracing teams. The First Minister has repeatedly indicated her concerns about these recent outbreaks in the daily briefing, so I stand by my original comment.
@briangriffiths114
@briangriffiths114 4 жыл бұрын
@Samizdat Neomodernist I agree that the situation in the UK is vastly improved over where we were several months ago but experience around the world shows that whenever a country lets its guard down the virus very quickly reasserts itself with eventual serious consequences for older people, those with comorbidities and those with low vitamin D levels. However, were it not for the asymptomatic spread and long lead-in time I doubt that COVID-19 would present such a threat as you generally could avoid anyone who had obviously contracted it, as you would someone suffering from a heavy cold or influenza. What is driving the current sporadic outbreaks that cause so much disruption are people ignoring the social distancing (and other) rules that prevents the virus having a bridge between them. The UK and regional governments are taking a preventitive strategy to avoid hospitals being overwhelmed like we see in some other countries. I follow the science rather than the media and Medcram has also proved helpful with explaining exactly how this virus works. Now that the medics understand it attacks the endothelium and causes micro-clots in a large minority of people, they can address this more effectively with blood thinners and/or drugs like Dexamethasone. However, until we receive a vaccine in a few months' time we will all have to live with the inconveniences a bit longer to protect those most at risk.
@briangriffiths114
@briangriffiths114 4 жыл бұрын

However, I will speculate that the virus may have reached Europe much earlier than believed and more people have had the mild version of it than officially recorded leading to widespread T-cell immunity in some localities.

Just nit-picking... but I think, for clarity, it should be emphasized that when R < 1.0 the increase in the number of cases *is decreasing* , not the total number of cases which never decreases. The cases are still increasing (ie. each infected person infects 'R' uninfected people) but over time that increase will become zero. Anyway, great video as usual! It sounded like, to me anyway, that if R < 1.0 then cases should be going down, contradicting the ONS data which has cases going up. Of course he meant 'new cases' but it didn't sound that way. Someone might be thinking, "total unresolved cases" are increasing which is a number we don't know because the UK doesn't seem to publish data on resolved cases. I just thought more clarity of language would help. It is not criticism. I make these same mistakes all the time and people come back and say "you said such and so!!" when I meant something else. @Peter S ok I don't think the NHS is all that it's cracked up to be at all, but it would in no way even begin to explain the high CFR compared to other countries, where their health services have sometimes literally been non existent and have turned away patients due to service overwhelm. If you look up the stats on any live COVID-19 feed and look at the number of cases recorded against the number of deaths in many other countries we fare an average infection rate, but about quadruple the number of deaths, something is not right with the recording of the data surely ?
@fatbelly27
@fatbelly27 4 жыл бұрын
@Peter S It's already having a major effect on the economy and we are nowhere near controlling this virus. I agree all those factors apply. In particular 'age of cases.' We seem to have a policy of discharging ill people from hospital to care homes if there is a nurse based in the care home. The problem is in this case we were discharging highly infectious people into a setting of many tens of vulnerable older people and I think of the official figures 22000 of the 45000 deaths were in case homes. Many care homes now face bankruptcy because they no longer have paying clients.
