Most people on this Drumeo show listen to the whole song at LEAST once before picking up the sticks. Chad listens to 30 Second to Mars, FOR 30 seconds, and just improvs his way into a badass cover. Love that shit.

I’ve watched many of the Drumeo videos and Chad’s is truly unique. The majority of the other drummers will listen to the entire drumless track first, most taking notes on timing, choruses, solos, transitions, etc. Then they will take a shot at it on a second play through. Chad listened to the first 30 seconds of a song he’s never heard, picked out the timing, felt the vibe and immediately started playing without any prior knowledge of the song’s structure. He actively listened to the entire song while simultaneously playing and adjusting to every transition, echoing guitar riffs, and emphasizing vocals… all in real time! That’s absolutely remarkable!

The title should’ve been “Chad Smith hears 30 seconds of Thirty Seconds To Mars, and then f’ng nails it” 😂 I think it’s a fantastic concept. Get a well known drummer, sit them at a kit, play them a drum less track and ask them to play what they think would work, and even better when it’s not that drummer’s preferred style/genre. Justin Hawkins (The Darkness) reacted to it in his channel and suggested getting their drummer on to give it a go. Chad wearing a Judas Priest shirt makes we want to see Drumeo throw someone in the deep end and get them to play Painkiller 😂

I would imagine that being bandmates with Frusciante, Flea, and Kiedis is part of the reason why he's so quick to pick up a song. That, and he's a fucking drum god and his attitude towards playing music is so refreshing. You never see Chad Smith not in the mood. He's just enjoyable to watch because he's always playing like he really means it. Stellar musician. 10/10

The fact that he was able to just jump in after listening to the first 30 or 40 seconds makes this THE drummer blind take video the best. Moving forward, I'd like to see Drumeo challenge more drummers to try that approach. Sort of like a Hot Ones challenge. No prep, just jump in blind.

I've watched a few reactions to this video (which is why KZfaq recommended yours, so hello!) and there's something none of them have picked up on that for some reason I just felt like you'd hit upon. At the end of the breakdown, he perfectly anticipates the final chorus, which everyone (myself and you included) rightly flip out for, but it's not some magic trick. He's tapping away and actively listening to the song. He hears the ambient swell during the last beat or two, and that's what triggers his finely-tuned senses to say "here we go!" Those are the sorts of little things that can make this sort of "perfect improvisation" possible. I think what triggered my ear to it (I recognized the chorus, but I'd never listened the song before) was something the drummer in my old church band said. I'm a singer & guitarist (primarily singer) and our band was completed by a jazz pianist, so we liked to play around with styles, arrangements, and I'd often add in vocal deviations and/or diva moments (because they're fun). The drummer said to me at one point during a practice that I sang like I was conducting the band. He pointed out that he could always hear that little edge to crescendo in my voice just before I was going to go off-script into something bigger, and that it allowed him to raise his intensity WITH me, not just picking it up after I'm already there. I'd never thought of that before, and while I certainly understood what he was saying, I don't think I'd really FELT it until I watched this Drumeo video for the first time and was able to anticipate the final chorus in real-time along with Chad. It was a total "a ha" moment for me. Anyway, I enjoyed this video, and I'll definitely be checking out more of your stuff. Cheers!

You need to check out any of the Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett videos. He was Michael Jackson’s live drummer from 83 til his death. MJ, a famous perfectionist, said “Everyone makes mistakes live, the guitar, even me, but not Sugarfoot.” I think that says it’s all. Dude is more accurate than a metronome! Or Larnell Lewis, a jazz fusion drummer, playing Enter Sandman after a single listen. He’s absolutely a musical genius, anticipating everything within 30 seconds. He apparently joined the group Snarky Puppy at the last minute and on the plane ride learned the entire catalog.

That whole series is a lot of fun, but I'm partial to Greyson Nekrutman playing Sleep Token (Hypnosis). He was just playing around and having fun at the end. If you notice he never actually listens to the song all the way through any time it’s played with the exception of when he played it. He also played it on the very first take and didn’t use a second or third take like all the other drummers did. Not taking away anything from the other drummers on the show as they all didn’t great job. Chad’s talent is just amazing. I personally believe that Chad Smith is one of the drummers that Shannon looked up to which is why it has a bit of Chads’ style in it.

This whole series of videos are great. Chad’s is particularly remarkable since he played as he listened for the take, but even the others (who are incredibly talented) where they just listen through the drumless track once and make an incredible take are just as impressive. Personally my favorites are of the younger drummers since they seem to more flexible in style than a lot of the more prestigious drummers (who are obviously incredible in their own right). Personal favorite was either the megadeth drummer or Zackgrooves covering architects. Both of them played the song very differently from the original, but in a way that sometimes sounds even better than the originals

You didn't commentbso i dont know if you picked up on the fact that the track he was listening to was a drumless track... which is the typical M.O. But where most listen through all the way once before trying it out on the 2nd and sometimes 3rd pass, so they can note the breaks etc... But no, he just jumps in without knowing where breaks are and nails them anyways, wtf.

Isn't the song in 6/8? 3/4 would say the are 3 quarternotes accents in a measure. 6/8 says the accents are on beats 1 and 4, dividing the measure in two basically. X/8 measures are always 3 and 2 8th note groups. X/4 measures mostly have accents on every quarter note. 8/8 is Coldplay - Clocks 4/4 is MJ - Billie Jean

No it’s 12/8 or 3/4. 12/8 is 12 8th notes in the bar. The main thing is this song is on 3 so it can be split 🙌🙌
