British voters head to the polls in the country's first parliamentary election since 2019, when Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party won by a landslide. Since then, Conservative members voted in Liz Truss, who resigned after just 44 days in office before party lawmakers elected Rishi Sunak, the current prime minister.
Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party and Britain's former government prosecutor, is Sunak's main rival in the race for Britain's top job. Starmer has centralized his party to appeal to middle-ground voters after his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn, took it to the left.
Sunak surprised the country six weeks ago when he called for snap elections for the U.K., one of the U.S.' most important allies and the world's sixth-biggest economy.

Opinion polls have consistently suggested that Sunak’s Conservative Party will lose to Keir Starmer’s main opposition Labour Party after 14 years in power.
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm local time (06:00 GMT to 21:00 GMT).
Voters will elect 650 lawmakers representing as many constituencies. The party with a majority in the House of Commons - either alone or with the backing of another party - will be tasked with forming the next government while its leader will become prime minister.
A party needs to win at least 50 percent of the seats - 326 - to secure a majority in the House of Commons and be asked to form a government by the monarch, King Charles III.
The members of Parliament’s upper chamber, the House of Lords, are appointed rather than elected.
If no party wins a majority, there is a hung parliament. If this occurs, the largest party can choose to form a coalition with other parties.
