UK Pedestrian Crossings

These are two of the types of pedestrian crossings used in the UK.
The first is a PELICAN Crossing - 'PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled' Crossing, which features the far side red and green man.
The other is a PUFFIN crossing - 'Pedestrian User Friendly INtelligent' crossing, which features a nearside pole mounted red and green man. The issue with PUFFIN crossings is that pedestrians cannot see if the green man is still showing while they are crossing but the crossings can detect the pedestrian so will give them time to cross. The cities of London and Birmingham switched back to PELICAN crossings in 2014 preferring the far sided red and green man.
Which crossing do you prefer?

Thank You for making this video. I understand the difference now. (Had to for my Theory test). I much prefer the Traditional Pelican Crossing because it's reassuring to see the green + red Man up high in front of you unlike the Puffin Crossing you can't if someone is blocking the screen while waiting on the pavement + once you start to cross that's it you can't see it as well. As Spiritus said below, if the red + green Man lights were still used as before then it would be better. I totally agree with this. Maybe we should start a campaign for this. From London.

These new ones are terrible. The pedestrian detection is a good idea, but the placement of the lights (or lack of) on the ones I've seen is awful and is more dangerous than before. For example, there's several people waiting to cross, the people furthest away from the button won't see the red/green man because they're obscured by the other people. If a car slows down, people assume that the lights have changed and will start to cross despite the fact the red man is still glowing. I get that the idea is that people look towards the oncoming traffic, but if you can't see the lights then they're completely useless. This problem would be solved if there were red/green man lights on the opposite side of the road as before in addition to the new lights.

I hate the ones on the side as well - in Bath, they changed the crossings in the area in front of the railway station to order crossings with the far side signals and a countdown, which is much better imo

When you have 2 crossings close together, whatever the type, they won't beep because otherwise, a blind person might hear the beep for the other crossing and then unknowingly walk out into traffic, and there's always a little cone on the bottom of the yellow box with the button that spins when the man is green

A pedestrian crossing near me on a very busy road as soon as you press the button the lights start to change were as the one further down the same road takes ages to stop the traffic so i always wait for things like trucks and buses to have either enough stopping distance or push button as there going past. 3:09 I used to work not very far from there and it was before the pub on corner got boarded up

Belisha crossings were the fore runner of Zebra crossings. In those days they just had the beacons and not much else possibly stripey posts I believe. Later they introduced the striped road and silver studs across the road and a group of six silver studs on approach. Later the zig-zags were introduced, a continental idea from the 70's The problem with traffic light controlled crossings is that both drivers and pedestrians are each looking at lights. This is one reason the "Green Man" far side of the crossing was eliminated. The unease this gave people caused pedestrians to look around to see what the traffic is doing and not stare at a light. An audible confirmation of safe to cross occurs on many crossings. Zebra crossings perform very well for pedestrians once traffic has stopped. Drivers and pedestrians each look directly at each other to know what is happening. I think they could update zebras with a detection pad at the kerb backed with video cameras to ascertain whether drivers failed to stop when someone was waiting and the video could show if kids were abusing the crossing.

I really dislike the new puffins due to the fact the older ones do not have the pedestrian detector thing and they have the beep. Plus the pelican is better due to the fact it has a buzzer for blind people.
@grassytramtracks
@grassytramtracks 2 жыл бұрын
Some puffin crossings have a beep, but the reason why some pedestrian crossings don't have a beep is because if you have two crossings that are next to eachother, a beep could be dangerous for a blind person. If they heard the beep for the other crossing, they might think it's safe, not realizing the beep wasn't for them, and walk straight into danger, and all crossings have a little cone on the bottom of the box with the button that spins when there's the green man

Some of the buttons that you press to cross the road have a revolving rod hidden at the bottom and blind people press the button and then feel for the revolving rod, this spins when the green man shows. Most sighted people don't even know it exists. Look for the revolving rod next time and put your hand on it, and it will start spinning when the green man appears :)

Crossings close to other crossings, whether they're puffin or pelican, don't beep because a blind person might hear another crossing beeping, think it's safe to cross and walk straight into the path of an oncoming car, it's not just random whether there's a beep or not, and there's a little cone on the bottom of the box with the button that spins when the green man is on

Pelican crossings would be fine if only the flashing green man was replaced with a flashing red man, as to many people start to cross when the green man is flashing thinking that they have right of way, they most certainly do not.

That's how newer pedestrian crossing signals function in the US. The "go" symbol (very similar to that of the UK, except white instead of green) indicates that persons should begin crossing. The "stop" symbol (a red hand) flashes when the crossing period is nearing its end, turning static when time has expired.
@grassytramtracks
@grassytramtracks 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it makes any difference because everyone just goes when they want to, completely ignoring the signals, if you look both ways and/or the cars are waiting, most people just go, whatever light is showing

Here in America, the pelican equivalent is also a bird, the HAWK. I think they're effective but they confuse some drivers. I think Pelicans are better since the signal faces for vehicles have the ordinary layout. Note that on HAWKs, the last phase with the flashing is with red lights instead of yellow, as it should be treated as a stop sign. What boggles minds is the way there are two adjacent red lamps that alternate, which many associate with railroad crossings where you have to remain stopped
