Days before the hundredth anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the British Prime Minister expressed regret over the incident. Theresa May called it a shameful scar in British-Indian history. Following the expression of regret, PM May hoped that UK's ties with India grow stronger. On April 13, 1919, British General Dyer shut the gates of the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar and opened indiscriminate fire on civilians. The firing continued for about 10 minutes, and an estimated 1,000 people were killed while another 1,500 were injured.

It is completely understandable considering we still have the Indian Jewelry in the Queen's crown, Most indian people I've heard from want it back or returns, but their Government isn't the best. I am sorry for what the British did - I wish this Government and people would finally own up and stop lying behind this mentality of "We helped revolutionise the world." Think about the atrocities what the British did to the Indians and other Colonies. I understand that you may not care about my apologies for any reason, I am only one English man out of Millions. But i wish this nation did not forget what they did and could finally see it's past for it. I live up North in England, so I do not see such stuff as the British Museum. But I can assume it's a bunch of stolen stuff from their Colonies as I've seen, I wish it would be given back.

@@owengrad. if only there were more people like you in Britain who would atleast accept their atrocities. Seriously you are the first British person I have seen acknowledging this and atleast feeling some guilt. We know current generation of Britain has got nothing to do with all this...but somehow we always feel that narcissist and colonial attitude still exists in Britain. It takes a lot of courage to accept your mistakes and apologize for that but your country has moved on like nothing ever happened, unlike Germans who accept that Hitler did lot of bad things and apologize for the same... they've learnt from it. Have you watched sardar udham movie? If not I would highly recommend this movie to you.

I would not go to a German, and blame him for the holocaust, and accuse them of being anti Jewish and supporters of Adolf Hitler. So yes the difference here, you see someone as an enemy and guilty as such based on place of birth, and i see an enemy based directly on that individuals personal principles, and crimes. Clearly my comment hit your colonial nerve somewhere. As for the Germans... The German Chancellor Willy Brandt did kneel and pay respects at the Warsaw ghetto in 1970. The British leaders until today, never paid a visit or paid respect to the Jaliyan Walabagh memorial. Never got a formal appology for Jaliyanwala bagh... Again there is a big difference. As a Brit myself, I can say that we do regard the Jallianwala Bagh massacre to be one of the darkest days of our empire’s history. What shouldn’t be forgotten, however, is these were the actions of one cold, malignant, self-righteous man-not the actions of a nation. Churchill himself condemned General Dyer for the events that day, as I’m sure most Brits do; and that includes myself. Dyer’s action that day betrayed British values. The British people are by no means saints and Britain is not without sin but it is also not without honour, integrity or sacrifice. At its core, the empire’s sole purpose was to spread freedom and democracy, not draconian, totalitarian, martial law. General Dyer was a disgrace to Britain, the British people, and the very values our country stands for. We don’t frequently discuss the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in the UK, and that’s somewhat cultural… We as a people are known for our resilience and stiff upper lip-as the Romans described us, it’s in our nature. The people of Britain will never allow the cold, callous and heinous actions of one man to undermine the importance and force for good our country has stood for throughout history-and to this very day. We hold our nation’s influence in forging much of modern world above all else. The freedoms, liberties and suit of democracy it brought to society; how it raised the standard of living and the moral and ethnic narrative of mankind-the very recourse that gave minorities a voice and a way to stand up and be heard. So, of course we deeply regret that fateful day. It undoubtably was a tragedy; an act of evil. However, we will never allow Dyer’s action to define Britain or undermine the very values we live by… the values this country has only ever tried to share and promote. Compare that to Nazi Germany: thousands participated in the tyrannical regime; albeit not personally, they were complicit. Few stood up and objected to the party’s ideologies. Instead, the majority of the country embraced the change in political direction. And that is the difference. Nazi Germany was a nation’s doing… This was one man’s doing. It is the reason why we do not collectively apologise-at least explicitly-as a nation, because, we equally condemn Dyer and the orders he gave that day.

@@dWFnZWVr u need regret the whole existence of british in India(medieval jewel of the world) the British conquest of India was an destruction of high civilisation first by a trading company and than a group of frivolous racist individuals who call themselves lord and when ancient India was enjoying democracy under the reign of Samudragupta n others , people of British was roaming around in the jungle with blue faces on. Are you aware of the consequences of those laws n ordinances that were passed by winston Churchill and his predecessors those who fought and stand for the WHITE people, people were getting killed under the rules of hitler, the same was happening against the coloured people around the world. Whether it is manmade famines, or following DIVIDE AND RULE policy(the reason of racial discrimination our countries, Turning religions agains one another, dividing people on the basis of skin colour ) members of my family died in the great bengal famine which was created by Britain’s godlike figure W.Churchill, how he ruthlessly killed afghans, insurgents who were active in Mao Mao insurgent. And the numbers says people who died in famine or killed in manmade riots of British colonies are much more higher than 1940’s German Jews. White people saw hitler as a threat because hitler was committing crime against WHITE PEOPLE, if u still think that that little island (britain)was spreading democracy n law n order that read few history books and find out the origins of democracy, rule, rights n just distribute out artefacts, looted diamonds, the stolen 65 trillion dollar, and massive amount of ancient artefacts that are stored in the lootmarket (British museum).

@@tunirdas3513 Like all empires throughout history the British Empire exacted a toll, but it was still broadly beneficial to the overall evolution of mankind. I am not in anyway claiming that the British empire didn’t have its casualties, it did, all I wish to highlight is that it would be frankly wrong to say that it was all negative. The very world we live in today is proof in itself that the British Empire did have its positives. As for the claim that India enjoyed democracy before British occupation, it’s a cause for debate. Personally, I would dispute such a claim. There are three notable points I’d make to challenge this: 1. The Vijayanagara Empire did display tiers of administration within their Government, however, still being ruled by a king and failing to provide representation their government is not representative of a democracy. 2. The Ahom Kingdom did form councils but it does not seem to be representative of the people but rather current royalty. 3. The Sikh Empire probably came closest in terms of employing a semblance of democracy. However, a British observer decried the situation as a "dangerous military democracy". British representatives and visitors in the Punjab described the regiments as preserving "puritanical" order internally, but also as being in a perpetual state of mutiny or rebellion against the central Durbar. This obviously includes a touch of British (1839) influence and though a "democracy" is mentioned this was at the same time a rapid sucsession of kings were in power. In all three cases, the system of government in place was not representative of "the people". It has been noted that, throughout history, not all democracies have truly represented "the people". However, with regards to India and South Asia the tiers/councils/military at the time were simply representative of too few people, or rather a very select group of people (Royalty or military). This along with the implementation of sole rulers makes it difficult to justify that democracy was present prior to British occupation. The Indian subcontinent was a collective combination of ethnic groups frequently in conflict with one another. The reality is the British were the first to bring stability, laws, and a central government to the region-establishing the Union of India that we know today. India as an independent nation state however, did not exist until 1947, marking the end of its British occupation. Churchill was not perfect but he was the only man that could have led Britain through the war. It is true that he and his cabinet made the Bengal famine worse with the policies they imposed. It is also true that a cyclone and flooding were the initial cause. Therefore, I don’t necessarily feel it right that Churchill be the sole subject of blame. Regardless of his personal views, he had to make some of the most difficult decisions a prime minister could ever possibly face. Just days after taking office Churchill had to decide the fate of over 1000 British sailors who were facing a German ambush. If he hadn’t, the Nazis would have discovered we’d cracked their naval enigma code. The crucial piece of intelligence that the British had on German movements-shortening the war by 2 years and saving millions more lives. That decision in itself I doubt anyone could stomach lightly let alone make on the spot, mere days after taking office. His policies which attributed to the worsening of the Bengal famine were a sad reality of the war. He and his cabinet feared Japanese invasion and that crops and produce would offer the Japanese forces vital means of sustainability, which would in turn aid an expansion inland. I think one must remember that the democratic world as we knew it was under threat. The responsibility ultimately fell to Churchill to ensure the British government did all it could to defend our democratic freedoms and values. I’m sorry to hear you lost members of your family during that time. Heartbreaking decisions were made as part of the war effort. If Britain had allowed Europe to fall we’d all likely be speaking German. I don’t for one minute think the British empire was by any means “perfect” or “faultless” but I hold a balanced view on the subject. There were dark days of British colonialism but it consequently gave us a lot back, too-forging much of the world we know today. It instilled with us the very values and freedoms that we live by; the same ones we often take for granted.

@@dr.s.mallick You’re not forced to speak English; you can, by your own free will, speak your mother tongue. It is a positive that a single language - which happens to be English due to the influence of the British - spread around the globe, because it enabled the world to decide on a universal tongue in which to communicate when necessary: i.e. in aviation (air traffic control and pilots) and in business (English being the international language of business). There are instances where communication needs to be standardised for safety and also practicality. Today, that language is English, and it’s global reach enabled a fairly hassle free adoption [/and agreement], worldwide. It is the duty of all nations that believe in democracy and the social contract between man and state to apologise for and fix any diplomatic tragedies that they may have committed in the past; This duty does not apply to Great Britain though, they still haven't caught up with the developed world - their upper chamber is non-democratic and full of criminals, 80% of positions in high govt are appointees, their crimes are too many to count and they still don't accept the notion of free men and 'no man is created higher than another' - in other words, GB never had a revolution, never had an enlightenment like France and Europe and they accept the literature but reject the meaning, nasty nation. GB will now become even more isolated as the Europeans are breaking ties with them and of course, beating GB at everything (trade, eu commis vs civil service, medicines, airline). GB will be US50+1
