International students around the globe have been eagerly anticipating the UK Government's decision regarding the Post Study Work (PSW) or Graduate Route Visa. Today, the verdict has been delivered: "No evidence foreign students are abusing UK graduate visas, review finds."
In a significant development, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has affirmed the continuation of the graduate visa entitlement, enabling international students to work for two or three years post-graduation. The committee's evaluation indicates that the risks of abuse are minimal and do not compromise the integrity and quality of higher education in the UK.
However, the release of the report has sparked internal discord within the Conservative party, with some senior right-wing MPs denouncing it as a "whitewash." Former immigration minister Robert Jenrick voiced concerns over the committee's autonomy, suggesting tight control exerted by the commission from Home Secretary James Cleverly.
Key highlights from the committee's findings include:
Lack of widespread abuse in the graduate route.
Low risks of exploitation due to limited conditions imposed by the route.
Separate concerns regarding potential exploitation by certain agents recruiting students and mis-selling UK higher education.
Granting of 114,000 graduate route visas for main applicants in 2023, with an additional 30,000 for dependents.
Concentrated usage of the graduate route among four nationalities, namely India, Nigeria, China, and Pakistan, which collectively represent 70% of all graduate visas, with India alone contributing over 40%.
