Those cheap scotch blends cost pennies to make for the big brands, and the profit it brings in surprised me when I look into it. Your stereotypical pub whiskey drinker in Glasgow will go through 4-6 bottles on average a year at home, hence the saturation in supermarkets. My concern is that if good whisky isn’t readily available and priced accessible, how do new people stumble onto it? It’s so price prohibiting across most supermarkets, but Waitrose at least has some solid picks under £40. It’s not worth an hour drive but always worth popping in if you are passing, as their infamous yellow reduced to clear stickers can be found on some cracking bottles!

@@drinkswhisky ive always had it in my head these legacy jobbing blends were the choice of older generations who maybe won’t be around in another 10-20 years and will need to follow the Maclean’s Nose and Thompson Bros blends and cut back on the young grain in order to appeal to the malt drinkers who are shrinking away from the new asking price for 18 year old stuff or they will have a hard time going forward. I take your point on the lack of quality options for under £30 that might bring a new drinker in, it’s slim pickings in 2024. It took a chance encounter with a Laphroaig 10 to get me interested in whisky and I picked up a full bottle for under £25 about 8 years ago. It’s still there but the Balvenies, Talisker 10s, Lagavulin 16s, Aberlours, Highland Parks that were sitting next to it are all long gone. The value isn’t there any more in what’s come after, NAS Glenlivets, Aerstones, Jura and Tamnavulin they all seem like the same dram and nothing that’s going to blow anyone’s mind.

I’m in the market for an Ardbeg 10 but put off by what seems like an inflated price most places. Cheapest I’ve seen is £43 currently. Yeah a few folk have managed to get some Waitrose bargains! And absolutely, when you see something you’ll go through, no harm in grabbing a few more!

Probably makers mark 46. Not saying it’s the best stuff but picked it up for about 20 quid. They had bottles and bottles of the stuff all yellow stickered. Think it was so cheap the self scanner checkouts didn’t know what to do cos it was probably below the minimum price per unit of alcohol 😂 anyway some staff member authorised it so I was pretty happy!

Yeah it’s getting out of hand especially the current duty on a bottle. Pricing out a lot of people who have never had decent whisky. Once cost of living factors in, I’m amazed we are still getting anything drinkable under £40
