To mark the 40th anniversary in passenger service of the InterCity 125 HST, this compilation of footage (that can be found in full my channel) from 1986 to 2016 covers most of the liveries worn by the HST during that period and has been filmed at multiple locations on the ECML, GWML, WCML, MML, and Cross Country routes.
Regular services feature, but there's also footage of power cars running solo, converted DVT power cars, the NMT, and 41001.

Its weird seeing 1980s footage of the HST, they looked grimy and well worn as if they were 40 years old back then. But in todays modern liveries and their refurbs, they look like trains built in the early 2000s. The design has aged extremely well, they look even more modern and elegant now.

Hi MrDeltic, the first HST we see has the usual two first class coaches. The second coach appears to have a red stripe over the yellow first class stripe, is this just my eyes or did it indicate a first class dinning/buffet car? I remember going to Plymouth station about 1977 and seeing one of these for the first time....magic.

It would be nice when they finally retire to do one more final speed run and break their own speed record using Valenta engines as the fastest diesel engine in the world, much like the SR71 blackbird is the fastest jet plane ever, and the world will know about the inter city 125 HST, great video.

It's the self-levelling suspension air bags, quite pronounced on Mk3 stock but also audible on some other stock to a lesser extent.

does anyone have any comments about the four that had Mirlees MB190 engines fitted in the late 80s.. I designed the governor/engine control system and spent a couple of years traveling about on them checking all was working ok.

I do feel that the time has come to retire these old warhorses, they must all be into the multi million miles by now. I know there was much frothage when they MTU'd them, it gave them a life extension of a few years, but time moves on. I hope a full rake at least is preserved, but where would you keep something that huge? Not many preserved lines are geared up to stable something that massive, it would also be nice to paint up a power car to match the prototype, but hey ho
@MrDeltic15
@MrDeltic15 7 жыл бұрын
I can still see them making 50 years in service, after all Scotrail will be taking on 2+5 sets fairly soon. The main issue is the Mk3 stock, still arguably the best coaches on the network, but they need time and money spending on them to comply with new disability regulations coming into force at the end of the decade. The 125 Group has prototype 41001 and three Mk3's at GCR(N), and their aim is to have a full set too. Once the GCR(N) is linked to the GCR that will be a long stretch of line(with double track sections and access to the mainline)that will be ideal for a preserved HST set, and hopefully with a mainline certificate it would be in great demand for charters and hire with its excellent UK route availability.

it's kind of absurd from today's point of view. They spent more than half a billion pounds on the HST which is a class 43 diesel nightmare. That same money would at the time have been enough to electrify two more mainlines and operate them with class 87 and later class 90 and 91. Dieselisation was the single biggest mistake in the post war history of railway politics and even in the 1970s they did not change anything. Shame on them! 😠 An elderly friend of mine, a life-long railway enthusiast, said it best: "Of course I love the Deltics but they should never have been built." Same is true for the HST. Thank God electrification of the Great Western Mainline has just been completed from London to Bristol. That makes 3 mainlines (almost) entirely electrified. I totally understand that they went with diesel locos in the first 10-15 years after the war when Britain was heavily dependent on foreign loans and the false promise of "cheap oil" kinda hypnotized everybody. But since the 1960s dieselization was already obsolete. Roughly 60 years later Britain finally liberates itself from this historic mistake. Honestly, I can't wait to see one damn' class 43 after another being brought where they belong: One trainset for the railway museum and the rest, yes, TO THE SCRAP YARD!!!

Pro & Contra Deutschland interesting point of view, but they were a very fast turn around of engineering and very successful at the time to solve a problem caused by stall in development of the APT
@MarioStahl1983
@MarioStahl1983 4 жыл бұрын
@@MePeterNicholls I know. I don't wanna take anything away from the engineers who really tried to make the best out of it after the APT failed and funding for further electrification was cancelled after the West Coast Mainline electrification had been completed in 1974. Travel times of course were cut dramatically and the HST was a really comfortable train. I travelled on it myself many times and I totally understand why people liked it at the time. But I also believe that a nation's railway system is always a mirror of the all over situation. In this case it was incredibly stupid not to continue the electrification process AND THEY KNEW IT!! When Margaret Thatcher learned that British Rail used about 1 Million gallons of diesel every single day she immediately agreed to the electrification of the entire East Coast Mainline even at a cost of about 350 Million pounds which at the time was considered a huge investment. Britain became an oil exporting nation instead of importing oil. Sadly, after the Thatcher era electrification for many years didn't go on. It is in that sense that class 43 in reality is a symbol of failure (in spite of its relative success).

My god. Thats 3.2 billion kg of CO2 per year. Jesus.
@MarioStahl1983
@MarioStahl1983 4 жыл бұрын
@@MePeterNicholls It's probably only a little less today because while various electrification schemes luckily are completed (ECML and GWML etc.) the sheer number of diesel trains hasn't changed much because the all over number of trains is constantly increasing.
