Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a KZfaq video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

The thing with the eggs is because here in the UK the protective coating, which helps prevent salmonella etc getting to the eggs, stays on the eggs so they can be stored out of the fridge. In America by law eggs must be washed which then removes the coating, so they have to be stored in the fridge to stop the bugs getting to them.

It's one of the weirdest things to understand regarding food in my opinion. North America is far more capitalist than the UK will EVER be. And yet they have regulations in place regarding eggs that serve no purpose other than to add levels of bureaucracy and inconvenience to both the seller and buyer of the product.

Even though I'm in the UK and know all about the coating, we still store eggs in the fridge. Partly because it's the inherited way from parents and partly because with starting cold, I can time a soft/hard boiled egg perfectly to my taste.

The frozen fruit and grape punch isn't juice by British legal standards as it's got added flavourings and sweeteners. It isn't any better than a good quality fruit squash in the UK, but is less convenient as you have to defrost it and use the whole can at one go. You can buy grape juice in larger British supermarkets but it tends to be in the unrefrigerated-juices-from-concentrate section rather than the chilled fresh juice section.

North America is one of only a handful of countries that commercially wash their eggs and this process removes the Cuticle, the natural barrier, from the shell thereby requiring the eggs to be refrigerated. The washing process and refrigerated transport needs many extra workers and costs which means higher prices. The great majority of the world don’t wash their eggs and they stay fresh at room temperature for weeks.

Eggs (Hen, Duck or Goose) can be kept fresh for months in a dark cool cupboard by coating in melted butter to completely seal the shell preventing air ingress. Gives them a nice buttery flavour after a month or two. The fresher they are when done the better so a back of the shelf search in the store. Ideal for stocking up on free range or organic incase an Avian Flu lockdown occurs again this year and they all get locked up indoors again.

I recall that was the way Bennetts Dairies of Worcester (UK) delivered milk in the late 1960's. @@anny1_232 I suppose those thin bags of milk were 'better' for the environment than the semi rigid bottles that we still bring home from the Supermarket. It is not easy to do the 'proper thing'. Even washing out the old fashioned glass milk bottles, used up water and other resources like washing up liquid. Being environmentally conscious is not as easy as the all too visible environmental campaigners nowadays try to suggest it is. They invaded my concert hall last Friday! I expect that the Ukrainian composer whose work was being premiered would, if asked, have said that there were other priorities, such as the liberty to choose how one lives their life and what they are allowed to believe.

@@gerardphelan7996 you’re right there! I’ve worked in conservation for 30 years, and there aren’t any easy solutions. However, generally speaking single use plastics, like the milk bags were, are the worst offenders of all. Plastic does not readily degrade, and even the so-called biodegradable plastics are not always what they appear. At least with the old glass bottles they could be genuinely re-used many times and are easily recycled at the end of their useful life. And you could always give them a rinse during the normal washing up dishes process, if you were concerned about water wasting - which is of course another problem as you say.

On the subject of eggs, they need to be refrigerated in North America and Canada because since the '70s they were washed in hot soapy water straight after being laid which would remove any bacteria (including salmonella) but would also remove a thin layer called the cuticle that protects the egg from bacteria, but also keeps water and oxygen in and odours out. This makes it necessary to keep them innthe fridge to prevent infection. In Europe it's illegal for egg producers to wash eggs which ensures the cuticle is kept intact and refrigeration is discouraged as mildew can form in the eggs when they are coming back up to room temperature . Also chickens have been vaccinated against salmonella in Europe for quite a while now.

Lots of factors for higher food prices. UK has just under twice the population crammed into a much smaller land mass thus higher transportation costs in Canada. Lack of competition - 3 organizations control the market plus Costco. Supply Management. High percent of goods are produced in the USA thus exchange rate is a factor + transportation. Veg / fruit mostly from the USA and Mexico - again exchange rate plus transportation.

Before milk was sold in bags in Ontario, they were sold in plastic jugs. When the plastic bags of milk were first introduced, they were sold alongside the jugs but the bags were cheaper for the same total amount of milk AND a deposit was paid for the plastic jug which was refundable when the jug was returned. After a while, people preferred the cheaper bagged milk and avoided the hassle of returning the jugs. It also turns out that more plastic was lost in recycling the plastic jugs than is used for the plastic milk bags.

You like Cheese and Baked Beans. One of my favourites is to do a round of Cheese on Toast and then put Beans on top. If you are really feeling in a strange mood you can add a fried or poached egg on top of that. Now that is a lunch!!

The milk bag came about when Canada changed its metric system it was easier to replace glass bottles with plastic bags rather than convert or come up with new configuration for jugs.😊👍

The bag milk thing happened when milk started being sold in liters instead of pints and quarts, i think in the early 70s. I guess the bagging equipment was the cheapest way to get milk from the distributors and into the stores. Bags of milk bags are also much cheaper to ship than cartons or bottles.

The thing we do differently in uk with eggs is we do NOT wash them. So they still have the protective membrane on them. Meaning they do not have to be refrigerated. However usually do refrigerate mine(especially in the summer) as I buy BIG boxes and they do keep for longer in the fridge than on the unit/in a cupboard. The times Iv not refrigerated eggs they have always gone off before I could use them all.

I know this comment isn't relevant to this video, but I recently watched your post about the "negative" (typical English understatement) post you receive. Trolls are trolls and unfortunately are an fact of life on the internet. You were absolutely spot on when you say that these idiots would not have the courage to say it to your face. To up sticks and move to a new country and purposefully attempt to assimilate to that country shows a bravery that I don't possess. I love travel and visiting countries around the world, but I will always return to England. Can I say that I do enjoy your view of us, highlighting our quirks and affectations, and the obvious delight that you show in being here. I just wanted to say don't be put off by those who would try to put you down. The reality is that they only expose themselves as the weak, powerless people they are. Take care.

I went to the movies when I was in the UK and ordered popcorn at the concessions stand ... the lady behind the counter asked, "salt or sugar?" I stared blankly and said, "WHAT?" She repeated it and I stammered out .... "s, s, sssalt...." It was WAY before Kettle Corn was a thing and I was SHOOK!!! I'm sure she thought I was so rude with my obnoxious American "WHAT?"

Sainsbury's about 15 - 20 years ago introduced milk in bags using a jug the lid pierced the bag for pouring. It never caught on in the UK the bags often leaked in the fridge , car or in the trolley walking around Sainsbury's.from memory you could only buy 1 litre bags individually or multi buy offer. Enjoyed the video

IIRC the egg thing is due to them being bleached in North America which removes the built in protection from the shell. British eggs are not bleached so retain the natural protection.

10:40 the same chicken breasts in the UK are slightly cheaper at £5.99 (CAD 10.29) per kilo in Aldi rather than the £14.86 (CAD 25) for two kilos that you mention. Also, with the frozen concentrated juice we used to have those in the UK (well, really only orange juice) maybe about 30 years ago but you don't see it any more.

It's not that we Brits don't like grape juice and grape flavoured drinks, it's that North America had a Blackcurrant disease problem, and had to wipe out their blackcurrant plants because of it. They moved to grape flavoured soft drinks instead, where as we still had fine Blackcurrants and kept using them. We do have grape drinks in the UK, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic ones but with so many juice flavours, grape is not as popular.

Great video Alanna but I can't believe Mama Naps didn't get you the Costco size bag of All Dressed Ruffles 😂 I think I read somewhere all dressed was a combination of ketchup, BBQ, sour cream&onion and salt&vinegar. I honestly don't recall the last time I did a full shop at Walmart. There are discount chains like No Frills, Food Basics, FreshCo and Giant Tiger. There is also Dollarama and Dollar Tree although neither of them sell anything fresh. I wish Aldi and/or Lidl would open stores in Canada
