- US-made F-16s will arrive in Ukraine much later than anticipated and in much smaller numbers than expected;
- The Western media has assumed F-16s might help Ukraine bolster its flagging air defenses against both Russian cruise missiles and Russian fighter-bombers dropping stand-off guided glide bombs, but much more likely the handful of aircraft will be used to continue Ukraine’s symbolic air-launched cruise missile strikes;
- The Western media has admitted that air forces transitioning from Soviet-era warplanes to the F-16 can take years to do properly, rushing Ukraine’s transition will result in the same predictable losses of equipment due to ineffective operators that Western main battle tanks transferred to Ukraine suffered;
- Romania has established a “pilot training hub” for NATO and Ukrainian pilots operating F-16 warplanes;
- Following revelations from leaked conversations of German military officers of NATO troops on the ground operating complex Western equipment, there exists the possibility NATO pilots could operate Ukrainian-marked F-16s;
- Russia’s larger number of warplanes and advanced integrated air defense capabilities will prevent small numbers of F-16s from significantly changing the course of the conflict strategically;

The US has not engaged a real enemy force in a serious war that has required long term sustainment of personnel and materiel since Vietnam. The idiots led by Nuland, and involving the State Dept, DoD, Congress and WH simply *assumed* that the conflict would be over in 90 days based on their absolute ignorance of what the Russian military and military industrial base could do when properly motivated. Absolutely pathetic.

Even in Vietnam, they were not fighting full-scale battles with peer-level air forces, tank divisions and massed artillery on the other side. You'd have to go back to Korea to get the sort of big smash-up of full armies along defensive lines that is occurring in eastern Ukraine currently.
@tekinfomedi
@tekinfomedi 2 ай бұрын
@@WangMingGe Maybe it should be WW2. In Korea, the US had no counterstrategy to the CCP and had to retreat along 1/2 of Korea in the face of a poorly-armed guerilla force back to the 38th parallel. The US was lucky that the other side did not have the advanced weaponry and a truly functioning navy and air force back then. Once back to the 38th, the US never tried again to truly conquer the North. Good luck to US troops if they really had to face Russians in the 5 regions.

You're right. Believe it or not, I actually speak and read+write Chinese (although ethnically Ukrainian). Reading sources from the other side...it's illuminating. The Chinese freely admit, in their own sources, that they were terribly equipped. A mish-mash of different small arms (American and Japanese captures from ww2 and the Chinese Civil War), very limited tank force, but, most of all, cold and hunger....their perserverence is remarkable, in the context, e.g. many soldiers night-blind because of a lack of Vitamin A, due to eating nothing but noodles/rice/flour cakes for months on end, yet the US forces were quite disturbed by the PLA's immense usage of night attacks. I suppose I am being generous, as, though the Chinese had numbers and artillery, they lacked everything else. WW2 would, as you say, be the last time they directly faced a modern industrial nation. BTW, this may seem redundant, but I see so much childish rudeness about our war, I wish to say I appreciate that we can discuss civilly even though our sympathies might be for different sides in this. @@tekinfomedi

@@WangMingGe If you look at the losses US took in Vietnam, that was 100% a proper war with full-scale battles. The amount of planes and materiel lost was insane. Those Vietnamese were no pushovers. Maybe they weren't on par with US, but whatever they had available was enough to really put a hurt on US operations.
@WangMingGe
@WangMingGe 2 ай бұрын
It's not the same as a peer competitor, to use Mearsheimer's phrase (I don't like his takes on Ukrainian history, as a Ukrainian, but he's a smart man). Vietnam's air force was still tiny, limited to short range fighters (no long range bombers/strike aircraft), no navy besides little patrol boats operating near or inshore, and it didn't have its own industrial capacity. Whereas, agreeing with one of the earlier posters, if you look at, say, Germany or Japan in WW2, these were nations with the full range of war equipment, their own factories, mines, arms industry etc. Of course the Vietnamese were no pushovers (in the end, they won, after all), nor were the Afghans, but they weren't fighting like how the Russians fight, which is the concern for any NATO country now. @@herpderp7114

The MiG29 is actually a somewhat more modern plane....I remember, watching documentaries as a kid, in the 1990s-00s, and seeing how even American pilots, given a chance to test both, admitted the MiG29 was better for air-to-air/dogfighting against enemy fighters, though the F16 was better for 'multirole'/ordinance-carrying missions (e.g. when you need to bomb some villages or guys with toyota pickup trucks in Afghanistan). Also, given the ruggedness of the Migs and their ability to use even low-grade airfields and to need less maintenance, I'd say the F16s are a slight downgrade.

As I wrote before, any complex weapons systems requires a large amount of non-combatant personnel in the logistics, support and maintenance chains to keep operating and get deployed on the battlefield. In the case of Abrams M1 tanks, the ratio is approximately 10:1, or 40 non-combatant personnel for the 4 crew members. In the case of F-16 fighter jets, the ratio is 100:1, or 200 non-combatant for every two pilots assigned to a single F16. So in effect, just to deploy 6 F16s in Ukraine, the West needs to train (in English) not only 12 pilots, but also approximately 1,200 support personnel - or deploy NATO personnel to perform these roles. And at this stage, it's hard to find 1,200 "volunteers" willing to risk their lives in Ukraine. They know the minute they enter Ukraine they will become priority targets for Russian missiles.
@khunmikeon858
@khunmikeon858 2 ай бұрын
I agree in principle, but I’m sure there would be some economies of scale that would alter your ratios for each and every additional plane. If 100 support people are needed for each plane, then its logical that that same 100 people could also take care of a 2nd or even a 3rd plane. It’s unlikely to be a linear equation. But whatever, 20 or 30 planes will not change the outcome.. Russia will succeed. Bravo Russia. Respect from Ireland. 🇮🇪💚🇷🇺

Yes, the F-16s can be effective. Ukraine would just need the following: 1) a multi-year training cycle to achieve a working level proficiency with the platform 2) a full support package of suitable runways, training maintenance crews and sufficient parts inventory with continuous re-supply 3) adequate air defense for the runways and hangars 4) an integrated contingent of other aircraft for SEAD work to counter the extremely extensive Russian air defense systems 5) a large supply of munitions for the F-16 If all of this is in place, then the F-16s would be very effective against a Russian force from the 1980s or 1990s. The problem of course, is that they are facing 2024 Russians with layers of extremely effective air defense, a very large air force including 5th Gen and comparable 4th Gen fighters in far greater numbers and an enhanced ISR capability that will likely be destroying those aircraft before they get near the front.

45? 45! What difference does this make?! If it is 450 F-16Vs, that might make the Russia paused but 45 old F-16s? Do they even have AESA radars? The longest ranged missiles it can fire is AIM-120D which is already outclassed by the latest R-27 and R-77. They will get blown out of the sky. Do they really think these F-16s are going to have a K/D ratio against Russian Sukhois at 10/1 or can avoid S-300 and S-400? They are not waging a war campaign, they are waging a PR campaign to keep deluding their own people and themselves that this is fine, everything is fine.

People often forget, even when the F16 was new, it wasn't a top of the line fighter. That was the F15. The F16 is to the F15 like the T72 is to the T64: the cheaper, simpler exportable version of the top-line thing. Some weapons systems focus on quality over quantity: there are plenty of accounts from WW2 of how a single, or a small number of Tigers and Panther tanks defeated or held off much larger forces of Shermans and T34s. But noone imagined a small quantity of Shermans would defeat a horde of Tigers, except maybe Hollywood. 450 F16s would be very useful. That's an air force. 45 B2 bombers, or F117 stealth fighters (or SU35s, for that matter) or some such fancy stuff might be interesting ,but 45 basic, export-grade decades-old F16s won't.
@gelinrefira
@gelinrefira 2 ай бұрын
@@WangMingGeAgreed. The F-16 was conceived as the Low in the High-Low fighter mix. Cheap to produce and export in large numbers, highly maneuverable for WVR fights, lightweight, easy to maintain (relative to F-15) and can carry limited ammunition to keep costs low and to preserve the platform's maneuverability. Over the years, it has morphed into a multi-role fighter and it is good enough if you are bombing enemies with no air defenses. But going against an integrated, sophisticated air defenses or a powerful air force on the attack, you are going to lose F-16s and lose a lot of them if you stubbornly try to penetrate the defenses or have them go up against more powerful jets with bigger radars and sophisticated BVR missiles backed by ground based radars and early warning support aircraft.
@WangMingGe

Yep....the cruel mistake (cruel to us, and whoever believes it) is expecting 'the western/NATO way of warfighting' (as some videos actually mythologize it) to achieve bombing-Third-World-militia results in an entirely different type of conflict, pretending that it was the weapons, and not the unique circumstances, which made the aircraft seem so invincible. @@gelinrefira

The reason the F16 isn't adequate is this: Its a SEAD/DEAD jet that is stellar at dog fighting. In this conflict, there hasn't been a single merge between two adversary jets. Not one. Sead/Dead requires DECADES of experience in warzones, not training centers. Otherwise, its a plane with inferior radar, inferior payload capabiltiy, inferior range, and all F16 tactics are based on mid air refueling, which will not be happening in ukranian air space. Even 100 F16's wouldn't be enough, because the F16 was never designed to fly SOLO. It is meant to fly in an air superiority zone provided by F15 air cover.

Meaning, they'll need tons of maintenance to keep airborne, and they won't have the upgraded flight and avionics of the newer models. They won't be able to get to Kyiv before they're targeted, then they'll be in the envelope of the S-400 batteries on the front lines.

Watched a great interview with Jacques Baud on The Duran. It really reinforces what Brian continually points out: The West/NATO only knows how to fight colonial wars. They don't have the right thinking to go up against Russia, either on the battlefield or in terms of industrial capacity. And because we're told in The West that everything Russia says are lies, we refuse to learn anything about our opponent. Therefore, we ascribe goals to Russia, which rarely has anything to do with their actual objectives. Victory under those self-imposed conditions is impossible.

How many American jet fighters were shot down in Vietnam--Jet fighters piloted by well-trained American pilots? The estimated number it is said to be somewhere around 2,251 aircraft. The F-16 is an excellent machine, but it was built 50 years ago, and the last upgrading to that aircraft was made, to the best of my knowledge, in 1993--31 years ego. According to sources, the United Sates Airforce don't purchase them anymore. Those Americans aircrafts in the Vietnam war were shot down by then much less technologically advanced anti-aircraft missiles. This is something to consider by the Ukrainian authority.
