The teenagers who live underground: Ukraine invested billions in infrastructure projects for the 2012 European football championships. But while the fans enjoyed the facilities, most of them didn't know that living around them - and beneath their feet - were young homeless people left on their own to survive dangerous, subterranean lives. Marcel Theroux went to Kiev to meet the children in 2012.
This episode first aired on 18/05/2012.

Griffith Williams I mean westerners hate children so no surprise they abuse them. Imagine giving entire generation of youngster a name. Just so you can belittle them. Western culture has a thing for insulting children that does not hold up to the previous one. Anything the new generation does and the old one disagrees, the old will belittle them to make themselves feel superior.

Many people are asking what the kids are doing now... sadly we lost touch with them very soon after making this film. They often changed phones, got new sim cards and moved from place to place. There are no choices at all in life in fact. The reality is that we simply exist, consequential to events of the past. Everything about us, our thoughts, ideals, likes and dislikes is predetermined based on one long and immensely complicated causal chain of events. What you see in this video is what it means to be born out of evolution. Life survives wherever possible, which means that inevitably, the most horrendous of possible lives will be played out. If it wasn't these people, it would be someone else.

There’s a documentary I really got invested in called “Children Underground” about extremely young runaways from the ages of 6 to 16…. Everyone they interviewed was asked “Why do you huff paint”? Kind of like the glue you see here …. They all replied because it takes the hunger away. These kids get addicted at a very young age to combat feeling hungry and then it turns both into an addiction and a cure for an empty stomach.

Volunteers cannot accommodate them all, they asked the authorities to help with the premises, but they refused. Sometimes I hate the government so much that it seems now I'm going to explode and just die. Sniffing glue and other methods of getting high reduces hunger. I was on the streets for 3 months in middle of winter when I was 15 after trying to get help for dangerous home environment. I was kicked out because my parents found out. Hunger is a horrible feeling. In my opinion it is harder to handle than being cold. You get to a point where you consider doing things you never thought you ever would just to feel better, even if it is just temporary. Because I wasn't legally emancipated anyone that tried to give me a place to stay, including the youth shelter, would have been charged with harboring a minor. I was so fortunate to be able to stay away from drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. And that I was able to rely completely on myself because there was no help available anywhere at that time. But that was why I was able to become self-sufficient at 16 with a GED, 2 jobs, and an apt. At 21 I put myself through college, graduating with honors. I have now worked in the mental health field for 30yrs with both kids and adults and my early experiences have oddly enough become a blessing in disguise. Although I would never want to go through that again!

Which is what I detest about so-called "professionalism". It's the same all across the board. It's actually nothing more and nothing less than a superiority complex designed to keep the haves from developing any emotional attachment to the have nots. Because we can't have all the poor people getting help, now, can we? How would "charities" make a fortune for the executive directors if everyone just helped each other?! Makes me feel violently nauseous. It's so deeply wrong and all the excuses in the world don't make it OK. If you dare to help, you had better keep shtum, otherwise you will lose your job! Seen it too many times. It's bullshit and a massive part of the problem.

@@lvmln7843 i was homeless for 6 years, i know what true homelessness looks and feels like, the way she behaves, dresses, and talks to the other members of their group....hell even the way they talk to her, you can see it in their eyes, they've felt the pain of hunger and the harsh elements, they would be more than happy to help each other and share their food, she wouldn't, if their group went a few days without food, she'd either run home, or if she came across food she would hide it from the rest or immediately eat it all herself, if somebody pulled a gun to rob the group, she would be the first person to either get robbed, shot for talkin shit, or run and leave the rest behind, i made the comment because in our group the same type of person joined our group, a girl dating one of my friends, she barely lasted a month and she complained all the time, ended up sneaking off to go to McDonald's

Most of them were very capable, but they didn't believe in themselves. We are all like this I suppose, just on a different place on the spectrum.
