An unpopular mobilization law to replenish Ukraine's troop numbers is working better than expected, according to the military. The army says if the number of new recruits continues to rise, it may be in a position to draft a demobilization law later this year. That would allow war-weary troops on the frontlines some much needed rest.

Since ancient Roman times people have understood that willing volunteers fight better than conscripted soldiers Both sides have a man power problem Russia has a larger population but they are recruiting 30k men a month and losing 35k because of their meat wave tactics and the resumption of U.S. aid as well as a ramp up of aid from Europe Hopefully, the extra troops will create a window for those that have been fighting for so long will get a break and hopefully some help for their mental health as the stress of fighting for so long will wear on anyone

Some of this isn’t explained correctly. While there is recruitment and a draft, what is taking place currently is that people are required to update their contact information with the draft office. If you have seen videos or stories about the mobilization people hunting down men, it was to update their information. Some of these stores give the impression that they grab a guy on a bus and drag him to the front, when it’s usually just to update his info, unless he actually had been drafted already

So how does one interpret the fact that Ukraine is being invaded by a foreign country and a draft is unpopular? Exactly how does that happen? If the US was invaded a draft wouldn't be unpopular. no country should be drafting men over the age of 50, ukraine needs to get the draft down to 18, and implement mandatory one year military service with an optional second year choice with benefits such as 10% less federal income tax for lifetime and first chance at employment for state , county, and city jobs.

You can actually volunteer from 18 and the law is specifically written to encourage early enlistment.The only reason they're calling up older individuals is because NATO(mainly the US) is footing the bill. Ie these are primarily working professionals and taxpayers. Their birth rate is so low compelling 20(18) to fight would produce fewer new recruits. Its a test basically. Someone in the halls of some institution(you probably suspect which) told them 'call up the olds so the young can rebuild the country we'll cover the expense'. This strategy cannot work for more than 2 years though. And if the US tries to do this in say an East Asian contingency for Japan and SK since they too have very few 18 year olds ita gonna backfire catastrophically. Since Ukraine has manageable costs(mostly) but Japan is a 125 million strong first world country. If the US subsidises them the same way Ukraine is....eh. But knowing bureaucrats they'll probably not realise that the Ukraine experiment doesn't scale up to other places.
