Ukraine war: EU's most Russia-friendly leader meets Putin in Moscow | BBC News

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, in a visit that has been heavily criticised by EU leaders and Ukraine's government.
Friday's meeting was part of what Mr Orban called a "peace mission", coming three days after a visit to Kyiv where he met Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Hungary has recently taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, but EU leaders have stressed that Mr Orban is not acting on behalf of the bloc.
Mr Orban is the EU's only head of government to have kept close ties to the Kremlin following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The invasion of Ukraine reminds us that colonialism does not come in one flavour. In Britain we think of colonialism as the conquest of distant lands and empires as fragmented assortments of foreign territories. Russian colonialism and the Russian empire are different. Rather than sailing to far-off shores, Russia expanded - east, south, and west - and absorbed its neighbours. The Russian model of colonialism by absorption confuses the divide between colonised and colonialists that was so stark in the British and French empires. In some ways Russia’s expansion was less destructive. The transatlantic slave trade and the kind of mass extirpation of indigenous people seen in the Americas have no direct parallels in Russian history. But the recent invasion of Ukraine points to another way of reading Russia’s colonial history. For one of the consequences of absorption is a lack of recognition that any conquest has taken place and, hence, an almost impermeable sense of entitlement. The result is a firm conviction that contiguous lands are not real countries, but mere annexes of Russia. For pro-Putin Russians, it is almost impossible to imagine the military take-over of Ukraine as an invasion; it’s more akin to taking back mislaid property. For Russian ultra-nationalists, Ukraine is still framed by its old imperial label of ‘Little Russia’ (and the Ukrainian language is just ‘Little Russian’). We might also be reminded of the curious imperial decree from 1863 which banned Ukrainian-language publications on the grounds that ‘no separate Little Russian language has ever existed, exists, or can exist’. Banning something that you claim does not exist might seem unnecessary. It speaks of a combination of defensiveness and dismissiveness. The diversity of colonial models and, I would argue of forms of racism (Multiracism, Polity Press, 2022), is hard to see and difficult to understand when nearly all our representations of colonialism (and racism) refer to American and Western European models. Universities have a key role in nurturing expertise in the history, politics, and languages of Asia and Africa. Not long ago the idea of globalisation was in the ascendant and ‘area’ or ‘regional’ studies went out of fashion. Many were looking forward to a cosmopolitan future when national histories had lost their significance. This agenda now looks like wishful thinking. Today, almost everywhere, nationalism is on the rise. Studying, comparing, and understanding the world’s many stories of colonial power and discrimination has never been more necessary.

Yup, especially as the one who wants war also started it with the invasion of Crimea in 2014 and his agents starting the civil war in the Donbas, all after his interferenced in ukrainian politic in 2013 that launched the popular movements. But the one who wants war still refuses to aknowledge that his country of 140 million and $2.2 trillions GDP can hardly take on a coalition of 900 million and $40 trillions GDP. Though it's understandable why he wants war -> how is he going to explain to the russians that he started a failed war, that so many russians died under his command for absolutely nothing and the russian civilian economy has been bled dry, all because of him and his extremely bad choices.

These governments were liberated from dictators who had oppressive regimes. Did they go exactly as planned? No. Were they perfectly executed? Not all. Was the original intent well-planned? Not always. But we stood up for the people deserving freedom and faced down tyranny. As a Hungarian, I am extremely happy that America is the symbol of the free world. It has its problems, but that only means it stands in the realm of reality. Nothing is perfect, but we strive to reach it with each step we take. We are flawed just as any other man. Governments think they are without flaw such as China and Russia, which is where they stand to lose.

The results speak for itself, Europe is going to endure more of the same for the foreseeable future. EU is clueless on how to end the war, while is full of enthusiasm to support whatever the US told it to do. Mr. Orban put his neck out and takes the initiative to look for a way out of this mess, and the EU spat the dummy and told you that "you have no mandate to do that". One thing that this India-Delta-India-Oscar-Tango did do is force Putin to publicly prioritize what he, Putin, has meant all along: ‘No ceasefire (says it will allow the Ukrainians to regroup) and that total capitulation is the only acceptable answer.’ This gives him added strength with the “non-opponents’ in Russia and solidifies Russia’s direction. It may be a domestic propaganda coup for Putin but it pulls him away, permanently, from the false position of negotiation, which should solidify the West more. He wants to erase Ukraine, absorb it into Russia and look West. From the NATO perspective: The Canadian proposal from years ago should be taken up so that NATO can eject Orban and Hungary, and have him take Turkey (even with their Black Sea access) and Bulgaria with him when he goes. Many agree that the war in Ukraine should end as soon as possible in order to prevent the catastrophic consequences of that conflict. Recently, there have been many proposals by statesmen such as Trump, Orban, Putin or Zelensky on how to achieve peace in Ukraine. One of the ways to achieve long-term peace in Ukraine, considering the real situation on the ground, is the application of the Australian model of the political system, which has proven to be very successful. As we know, the Australian political system is based on the continuity of belonging of Australia and the majority of its citizens to the British (Anglo-Saxon) historical, national and cultural identity, just as it is the case with Ukraine and Russia. Consequently, as a result of that, Australia has its own parliament and prime minister where English is accepted as the official language of that country. The British monarch is at the same time the head of the Australian state, as well as the commander-in-chief of the Australian armed forces, represented by the governor-general of Australia. Applying the same constitutional model, Ukraine would have its own parliament and prime minister, where the official language would be Russian, with the use of all other languages permitted. The Russian president will be at the same time Ukrainian head of state and the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, and he would be represented by the governor general of Ukraine. Such a solution would ensure peace and prosperity in Ukraine and Europe, just as it was the case with Australia, Canada or New Zealand.

@@andrewadams6905 in this case “warmonger” means someone who sends weapons to another country for their people to die in a needless war. It fits NATO and the US. NATO and the US are the true aggressors in this conflict and Russia had their legitimate security concerns since the fall of the Soviet Union but they kept provoking them. And the CIA organised coup in Kyiv in 2014 was the cherry on top of the ice cream! Go home and rethink your life!

@@GarnetNewfreeHave you forgotten that both China and S Africa already tried this a few months ago? Orban said the 2 sides are still worlds apart. Putin is demanding that he keeps the stolen regions, Ukraine remains permanently neutral, limits its military and gives Russia a veto on any help from security partners if Ukraine is attacked. Those terms are completely unreasonable. No one is the right to demand those things. On the other side the Donbas has large coal reserves and Crimea has huge offshore oil and gas reserves and a warm water port which gives easy commercial and strategic to access to Europe and the rest of the world. Giving in to Putin’s demands would cripple Ukraine economy and leave it without a military or security partners to defend itself from future invasion. I don’t see Orban having much success. The problem is that just like Hitler, Putin has no reasonable excuse for the war. He’s in the wrong. Peace depends on him backing down or being militarily defeated. Unfortunately.
